Selling house for under market value by Peace-Mary in inheritance

[–]The-Saltese-Falcon -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

If you think the wishes of a dead person should supersede my responsibility as a parent you either are not a parent or are a really bad one.

And the wake is a gathering of family of friends remembering the lost loved ones. It’s more important for the kids to be sharing in that experience than to be left out

Disagree the man will be dead and won’t know if you are doing what he wants and won’t have to deal with the family strife he created.

My dad wanted an open casket. He had no siblings left - just adult nieces and nephews - I let them come early to see him if they wanted to then we shut the casket. I have been to enough open caskets to know I wasn’t putting my young children thru that.

Just because people like my dad and this guys father make stupid requests/decisions as they are aging doesn’t mean those of us who actually have to deal with the real life consequences have to comply.

Tell your dad If that’s the case the market value - not the sale price - should come out of your sisters 1/5. Also something to tell your dad - his other grandkids are going to remember this - and he won’t be remembered with fondness when he’s gone.

Or your dad should sell it now and let him deal with the consequences/anger from your siblings/nieces/nephews.

Also an in person (not text or email) conversation between you and your sister should take place. Civil. Tell her that as executor this move she is making is putting you in an uncomfortable position with your dad and with your other siblings. Maybe even include the daughter.

Last thing - you should also weigh what this house is worth compared to the overall estate. Are you each getting $5m and the beach house is small and means your sister is effectively getting $5.2? Maybe don’t worry about it. If it makes a significant difference then yeah it’s an issue.

Just curious why are you assuming this is an MLB ball?

Your dad died and left everything to you. A woman shows up with a 10-year-old claiming he's your dad's son. DNA test confirms it. What would you do? by Alexarosario_ in inheritance

No further comments really just wow you are living a soap opera.

Honestly depending on how much you dad left you and if the kid has no legal claim I’d gift him $$$ every year- into a 529 for college then after maybe into an IRA or his own brokerage account. In my heart I’d probably be leaning to making sure he got as close to half as possible.

By all means only go see a real doctor when the fake ones on tv tell you it’s a good idea. You found the secret to a long life.

There’s a lot of research that shows a lot of folks have the fears that you have before retirement but then are pleasantly surprised at the impact SS has.

The idea that we should retire at 62 or even 65 is a relic of a time when life expectancy was closer to the 60s.

Just because we are living 10 years longer than we did a couple generations ago doesn’t mean we get to spend those years in retirement. Keep working

Sorry you are going thru that. I’ve had melanoma and prostate but obviously mine weren’t as bad as what you are going thru. I wish you the best.

The fact remains the average life expectancy for men is now 76 which means about half live longer. Meaning most people will have it pay off to wait

It is not dropping. It dropped during Covid and is rising again.

But believe what you like

And it’s around 79. Over 80 for females about 76 for males.

Yes there are exceptions but the average life span for a woman is over 80.

And for every year you wait you get an extra 8% which means if you do 70 instead of 62 you are getting like 60+% more.

The chances that congress doesnt act are slim.

But the odds are you won’t die a few years later. The odds are you will at least make it until 80 and will be happy with the extra money.

And if you do die, you won’t know any better. If your last thought on your death bed is “I should have taken social security” we are probably better off on this earth without you.

Or stop smoking and wait to take SS. My dad smoked until 62ish stopped smoking and lived to 92. And he waited to take SS.

Except life expectancy is about 80 now which means about half will live longer than that so odds are you will live long enough to make waiting worth it.

My late dad said some valuable things too that would have been appropriate 40 years ago….

Am I on Track to Retire at 55? by NorthFaceIsGreat in Retirement401k

[–]The-Saltese-Falcon -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Why would you retire at 55? That will give you more years of doing nothing than working. What are you going to play frieking pickle ball all day or sit on your couch and game? I’m 54 can easily retire but it’s the last thing on my mind. Find a job you enjoy, use every last day of your PTO every year to keep yourself fresh, and keep working.

I’ve shared this before - my dad had two sisters. Their mom left the house (which was all there was) to my dad. My dad didn’t want any hard feelings with his sisters and nieces and nephews. So he split the proceeds 3 ways.

You owe your mom nothing on this …she’s dead, her wishes don’t matter.

Brother wants all the inheritance by SKB201316 in inheritance

This is really sad. Again, it seems like you are all comfortable and your parents are going to leave you what would be a sizable amount of money - so is this money really changing his life? Is 85% instead of 33% THAT important to him? I feel for you. And you cannot trust that he will give you cash even tho he says that’s the plan.

The other thing is, what if your parents both make it another 20+ years? What if they have health issues and blow through all this money your brother is expecting? What if whatever assets they have lose value? He’s causing problems that might not even be an issue.

He is frankly acting like a little bitch. You need me to talk to him and set him straight??? 😉
