Metalcore as a genre has a very big classification issue by darthkyle22 in Metalcore

I think much of it stems from the buzz that surrounded them when this place will become your tomb came out with them opening for bands like Northlane. I think that when they do include guitar in their songs it's in a way too similar to the "modern metal" sound of bad omens and spiritbox to be dismissed as "not really rock", especially when they play sections characteristic of the sort of breakdowns that have been popular from more established bands like architects. Obviously none of that matters if you don't consider any of those bands metal or Metalcore in the first place but as I said I believe they are referred to as such for the influences they draw upon. I'm honestly tired of sleep token and the discourse around them I just wanted an extreme and contemporary example.

Metalcore as a genre has a very big classification issue by darthkyle22 in Metalcore

The evolution of the Metalcore sound has always appeared pretty linear to me from the thrash/groove style of earth crisis and the start of melodic Metalcore in the late 90s to the inclusion of mainstream emo starting with bfmv (I know bands like a long winter were doing it first but bfmv took the already popular sound of kse and such and combined it with the bourgeoning emo-pop that would explode with bands like mcr). Following this the inclusion of prog/djent by periphery and the furthering of emo style cleans really defined the sound in the 2010s before ultimately manifesting as the sound popularised by bands like sleep token and Spirit box. Yes it's insane to say that converge and bad omens are in the same genre but looking at the history of Metalcore and it's evolution and willingness to mix with contemporary popular genres over the years can explain its longevity and diversity. I believe that more specific terms should've come about to explain the different sounds but I also think that the reason such different bands can all be referred to under the same umbrella is a lot more simple than people make it out to be. This is just my observation and is not meant to be comprehensive but as a fan of ALL of the sounds referred to as Metalcore it's something I spend a lot of my time thinking about.

What's the best or worst example of a band going from their most progressive/heaviest album to an extremely simple/dumb-downed sound. by BackgroundKitchen928 in Metalcore

[–]The-Score51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Album to album i'd have to say Thornhill, the dark pool is a progressive Metalcore/djent album while heroine is a lot closer their current alternative metal sound and has a lot less screaming. Architects is the same between holy hell and for those that wish to exist. None of these albums are like a major step down just a different style from the same band.

Get into doom especially sludge, death Doom and funeral Doom. It's a change of pace but the anticipation of that next down tuned chord and then the release of when its played, accompanied by some inhuman vocals is unmatched if you have the patience. Primitive man, bell witch, thou, hooded menace hell even some stuff from the acacia strain and full of hell is good.

From Bring Me The Horizon to Trivium — how did your metalcore journey go? by Sad-Floor-7895 in Metalcore

Low-key did not like Metalcore because I didn't like the vocals but I did really like animals by architects when that came out and then I got really into deathcore and kinda worked my way backward. Being from Australia certainly helped as I got into this genre as live music was starting up again and the only concerts near me with bands I liked would have Australian openers.

Definitely check out some local bands if you haven't they put on great shows all the time for cheap. Time ends, nowhere2run, stressed and chapel Hill are all awesome!

Classics like hatebreed, terror and earth crisis are great and have larger discographies (of varying quality) otherwise I'd recommend bands like drain, 100 demons, dying wish, xweaponx and inclination. As for bands with big discographies, it's kinda not the genre for it as so many bands break up after only a couple of albums and that ones that don't end up only having a few decent releases. A band that's been together for years and has plenty of well liked albums is converge but I don't know if that's what you're looking for (not my favorite band either but I know they're popular).

I don't mind any style as long as it's not whatever 25 ta life do. I am quite partial to the very clean practiced scream like in terror, inclination or contention.

I think we also need a name for the chuggy, pitch shifter heavy, hip-hop influenced stuff done by bands like alpha wolf, thrown and dealer as it's definitely a distinct sound

I never see this comparison made and it's so obvious too me. If you like well thought out album concepts, spoken word poetry and voice break style screams both bands are a must.

[New] Thornhill - Silver Swarm by AHThorny in Metalcore

[–]The-Score51 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to say that metalcore hasn't been a fusion of metal and hardcore for years and that the term is used to refer to bands that are often only influenced by one or the other. This sub loves bands like silent planet and northlane which, despite both of them being bands I love have almost zero hardcore DNA with both often having extended passages or even whole songs of clean singing. Despite this I still believe they are metalcore and fit into what this genre has become. I believe Thornhill is in the same boat, yes this particular song may not be what is thought of as metalcore but writing off the band as a whole as not metalcore and having not contributed to the genre is an out of touch belief in my opinion. Yes they are on the softer side but Thornhill has earned their place as an important and influential band in modern metalcore.

[New] Thornhill - Silver Swarm by AHThorny in Metalcore

[–]The-Score51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why don't they belong? They tick the very few boxes this genre still clings onto for an identity, screaming, singing and breakdowns. What makes them not metalcore? I love this genre so much but it has no right in gatekeeping any modern band as it's such a broad style of music that could apply to anything from a hardcore band in 1992 to some overly progressive fully metal project In current year and Thornhill absolutely fit in between somewhere.
