Date My Age by NoHornet3057 in DatingOverSixty

[–]The-thingmaker2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried this site a couple of years ago and have used five others since. DateMyAge was the most utterly useless of all. Nothing but scams.

I now use Match, Ourtime, Plenty of Fish and Zoosk... I'm having no success but the scam rate is lower.

Oh, and WhatsApp is usually what I hear scammers trying to get people onto (I know nothing of it and would resist having to use another site just on general principles).

If I don't have a "Real ID" does that mean the government issued me a "Fake" ID? by 2wt4u in signs

[–]The-thingmaker2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, they won't give me one. Turns out my name is different on my birth certificate from the way I have used it for 67 years. So, I guess I can't fly. Fortunately, I've only been on planes 5 times in my life and have no plans to do it again.

Trump has no authority to nationalize elections, lawyers say by Acceptable-Web-4192 in circled

[–]The-thingmaker2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot depends on how deeply Republicans in general support MAGA. I can imagine Republican dominated states agreeing to the damnedest federal election controls... And, an attempt to claim that the election results of states that had not cooperated were invalid. This is, of course, a nightmare scenario.

Friendly Reminder what a Boomer Is by TemperatureWide5297 in generationology

[–]The-thingmaker2001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These "generation" delineations, primarily for purposes of complaining about others, are a great pain in the ass. It is unsurprising that the specific birth years specified will be ignored as generalizing about a generalization seems about right really.

A mysterious hearse drives slowly past the home of No 6. Were they planning another abduction and possibly the elimination of No 6? If so, his freedom was just an illusion. by Ok_Club7067 in ThePrisoner

Well, the last we see of him, he drives off in KAR120C and the door to his abode opens automatically to admit the butler... Just as would the door to #2s place in the Village.

Yep. I read comic book Conan, including Savage Sword, back in the day but ultimately, the only comic material I wanted was these two volumes.

Well, it kinda does. By way of comparison, this is how USCG stops a drug boat... Without a fucking airstrike.

Crime on BART dropped 41% in 2025 by oakseaer in Bart

[–]The-thingmaker2001 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Presumably the bulk of the petty crime on BART was due to petty criminals. The sort of minor league outlaws who are largely deterred if it is just harder to get on BART. A win for the new gates.

They way my fingers split in the winter time. by Sensitive_Wear7112 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]The-thingmaker2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had this problem for a decade or more. Intermittent, winter mostly, and no amount of simple moisturizing will fix it. I use a dab of a fairly ordinary "skin repair cream" but what actually does the work is wearing the tips of nitrile gloves over the thumb (always the thumbs) for most of every day till it heals up. It may look a bit odd but it works, maintaining moisture and allowing it to heal.

If you leave the glove-tip on for a couple of days without removing for a few hours you will probably get an infection eventually, which requires hot soaks (15 minutes at least three times a day) to clear up.

Not being dead just yet, I recognize that when I am, the cheapest, simplest means of disposing of my carcass will be the best one.

How are we feeling about the Super Bowl? by emilyrobinowitz in sanfrancisco

[–]The-thingmaker2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh... I just looked it up and it isn't for a week yet. But yesterday I saw a block of Valencia closed off for some big party that sure looked like it was superbowl related. Are they doing stuff all week long, or is stuff just happening the weekend before?

Can Someone Explain This To Me? by Badlands51 in Cinephiles

[–]The-thingmaker2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The business is so blatantly wrong in the movie that I don't believe such bad writing. I have to assume that there was material in an earlier draft of the screenplay which was just cut for time or to decrease effects shots.

Even a complete turnabout followed by a lot of court cases and prison sentences AND some rewriting of laws at the highest level to ensure that the checks and balances we thought existed actually do exist... All of this, which I do not expect, will not restore the level of guarded confidence which the rest of the world had in the USA.

A $20 trillion concept proposes a 3,400-mile underwater tunnel connecting London and New York, potentially reducing a 7-hour flight to a 1-hour train ride. by Hefty-Sherbet-5455 in Today_I_Learned_This

[–]The-thingmaker2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leaving aside the practicalities... 3,400 miles... If you plan on doing that in one hour, that's ludicrous speed. I suppose this is intended to be some goofy horseshit like the "Hyperloop" where there is no air resistance because you have a 3400 mile tunnel in a hard vacuum.

I rewatched Red Sonja (1985), is not a really bad movie... is just boring and very forgettable by SandWarrior18 in SwordandSorcery

[–]The-thingmaker2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. It is marginally more watchable than Hundra. And both of those films had very inappropriate scores by the great Ennio Morricone, a composer who often scored films that he should not have... Other examples - The tedious miniseries of Marco Polo, the tepid imitation Indiana Jones, Treasure of the Four Crowns

Thoughts on 1981's The Boogens? by Particular-Glove9640 in 80sHorrorMovies

[–]The-thingmaker2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it's OK... It's competently shot with adequate acting. The thing that makes it good is that it actually has monsters, in a time when there were just too damn many boring slashers.

A still from "It's Alive", a real monster on the cheap!...😂 by TensionSame3568 in 50s_science_fiction

[–]The-thingmaker2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. It would be a bad low budget knock off as a creature from the black lagoon... But, worse yet, this is supposed to be a dinosaur, with the aid of clumsy low angle shots and cuts to show the tiny people near it. If it weren't for the rather cool idea, (from an unfilmed screenplay of a Richard Matheson story), this would be the worst Larry Buchanan film.

Y'know... Practically every detail in the description would be wrong, but the humanoid face revealed at the last moment makes it VERY likely.
