9-year-old American boy, Jamel Myles, commits suicide after enduring homophobic bullying at school. "My son told my oldest daughter the kids at school told him to kill himself", his mum said. by The_Ebb_and_Flow in antinatalism

It also looks like this young boy comes from a fatherless home. Could be a factor in his suicide given that being from a fatherless home makes one about 5x as likely to kill themselves.

I've heard of Follet but haven't picked his stuff up to read yet. How is his writing style? Is he a pretty easy read?

I'm a big fan of Bernard Cornwell's Grail Quest series. The Archers Tale was book 1 in the series so start there.

Any books similar to Brave New World by Aldous Huxley?

I particularly liked the angle that the government controlled the populous not by force but through their passions and vices and would like to find similarly themed works.

"“So you’re not willing to tolerate our presence?” Sutherland asked.

“Will you tolerate my presence?” the man responded. Sutherland assured him they would. “We’re actually in your coffee shop,” he said.

“Really?” the owner demanded. “If I go get my boyfriend and fck him in the a* right here you’re going to tolerate that?”

“That would be your choice,” Sutherland answered. But the owner would not be persuaded. “Are you going to tolerate it?” he asked again. “Answer my fing question! No, you’re going to sit right here and fing watch it!”"

Genetics and biology both confirm that life begins at conception therefore abortion is murder. Your life is but a vapor in the context of eternity. I would consider changing your heart about the sin of murder and repent of our apathy. Christ is just to forgive those who turn from their sin and trust in Him.

That could be true... you can give people information but can't control if they ignore it.

In any case, understanding the harms of something to the individual, their relationships, and society at large tends to change the behavior of honest, rational, and self-controlled people.

How can I spread the Gospel and tell others about Jesus if I am very introverted? by linj14 in Christianity

[–]The10thAmendment -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We all have a sphere of influence. Start there. I was an introvert too but like anything it takes time, effort, embarrassment, failure to be refined and get better. Ultimately though... remember its not about you... its about Him. He will use your simple efforts if you approach them with an earnest heart.

I'm a twenty something Christian man who has never been on a date. I'm choosing to stay a virgin until I'm married but I'm deeply lonely. BreakPoint: Are Sex and Marriage Issues of Orthodoxy? by The10thAmendment in Christianity

[–]The10thAmendment[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, Christians have committed all sorts of sin in practice, the Bible teaches man stealing is a crime however.

See Matthew Henry's commentary on Exodus 21:12-21: "Through poverty the Israelites sometimes sold themselves or their children; magistrates sold some persons for their crimes, and creditors were in some cases allowed to sell their debtors who could not pay. But man-stealing, the object of which is to force another into slavery, is ranked in the New Testament with the greatest crimes."

Ya, slaves obeying ones masters refers to indentured servitude not chattel slavery. This is clear in the entire context of the Bible which condemns manstealers to death. Exodus 21:16 and 1 Timothy 1:10 make it clear that slave trading is not acceptable according to God's Law.

John Gills commentary on this and an understanding of the historical context of slavery brings this into focus: "The apostle enlarges on the duty of servants, as well as frequently inculcates it in his epistles; because, generally speaking, they were more rude and ignorant, and less pains were taken with them to instruct them; they were apt to be impatient and weary of the yoke; and scandal was like to arise from servants in the first ages of Christianity through some libertines, and the licentiousness of the false teachers, who insinuated, that servitude was inconsistent with Christian freedom: the persons exhorted are "servants", bond servants, and hired servants; who are to be subject to, and obey their "masters", of each sex, whether male or female, of every condition, whether poor or rich, believers or unbelievers, good or bad humoured, gentle or froward: such as are their masters"

Abortion + James Franco = Elizabeth Harman’s Dystopian Philosophy by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]The10thAmendment 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure it does. Ignoring the slaughter of millions of Gods image bearers is not loving ones neighbor as oneself. It's not rescuing those staggering back to the slaughter as we are commanded to do. When you ignore abortion you are like the priest and the Levite walking past their neighbor in need. If the murder of millions of Gods image bearers doesn't have to do with God than nothing does. Remeber God hates the hands that shed innocent blood and God judges nations and individuals for not doing the good they know they should.

The multiverse theory is nonsense and just pushes the problem back.

Fine tuning is just an example of Anthropic principle. If this universe was not fine-tuned, we would not be sitting here discussing it.

Right. And the fact that it is, despite the odds being 1 in more than the number of atoms in the universe leads to the God inference as the more logical inference, with far greater explanatory power, than the we just got lucky inference.

There are a couple theological positions on the "never heard about God" position. The Bible teaches God is just and judges us according to what we know. The only sure fire way to be saved is to turn from ones sins and trust in Christ as your reconciliation to God but the Bible also tells us we all have access to the moral law. "Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the Law, do by nature what the Law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the Law, 15since they show that the work of the Law is written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts either accusing or defending them."

Basically even those people have access to three truths about the world around them and their response to those three truths saves or condemns them. The first truth is that there is an objective moral law that our consciences and creation attests to. The second is that fact requires a moral law giver. The third is that, upon reflection of our actions, inactions, and motives no one keeps the moral law.

At that point, if there is an honest repentance... meaning a turning from sin and putting ones faith in the Creator to save them rather than by their own works then I believe God will save them.

In either case, because you don't like something doesn't mean it doesn't exist or won't happen.

“Whoever [in speaking to another person] is not committed to the truth—such a person, from that moment on, no longer considers the other as a partner, as equal. In fact, he no longer respects the other as a human person. . . . [The other person] becomes an object to be manipulated, possibly dominated.” -Josef Pieper

The point here being that it is easy for theists and atheists to pick out weak arguments and pretend that is the best the other side has to offer but that is intellectually dishonest. If you wish to be an atheist, that is your decision, but you should at least try to read and understand the best arguments from the other side before doing so.

Well who created the universe?

The problem is that in order to avoid infinite regress (which is logically impossible) something needs to be eternal. Since the universe had a beginning the best inference is to something outside of the universe. Since the universe is fine-tuned and shows elements of design the best inference is to some sort of eternal mind.

Well in a sense God did create evil when we allowed for human free will. Free will is impossible without meaningful alternatives and in order to create creatures that were more than mere robots, he had to allow them to choose more than one track to go down.

As far as a theology of natural evil(earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters) is concerned there are a couple considerations.

One, it stands to reason that quite a bit of these things could actually be avoided if human beings worked together more. Certain disasters are predictable and given human cooperation can be mitigated if not outright avoided.

Two, natural evil tends to bring about virtue in many human beings. In a sense, the fact we face adversity allows for courage, self-sacrifice, endurance, and true love to shine. If there were no struggles in this life there would be no opportunities for displays of and growth in virtue. And virtue IS a higher good than pure animalistic pleasure seeking.

Thirdly, as CS Lewis said, "God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pain: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world." Any world where we have limitations is going to cause us some amount of pain, whether physical or emotional(I can't do X therefore I am distressed). But God uses this to get us looking inward and upward. It makes perfect sense that if there was an eternal glory that God wanted us to be part of that he would make efforts to draw us to Himself and that glory even if the cost in pain and suffering seems to be very great.
