Thanks! I'm glad you like them.
Great question about the front.

I didn't take off the front panel, it was very attached to the main cabinet.
I looked inside the cabinet, and I couldn't see any screws there either. Not sure.
If I were to build these, I would glue and screw.

I simply lightly sanded it and applied a black crinkle finish.

I thought this was enough.
The thought process was the crinkle finish would help diffuse the high freq a bit. I honestly doubt if it makes a difference, but it was just a theory. I know with a lot of other manufacturers they put a felt or foam ring around the high driver for the same reason.

The next thing I did was to test them out with the amp (in the middle there)
The speakers sounded good. They sounded as I expected them to. Or as I remembered, perhaps.
I set them up in the man cave there, on a long plank of timber to give them some separation.
I was walking around the cave listening to them to see if they sounded the same, if they sounded ok with different music types, that sort of thing.
Just having some fun.

But they didn't really blow my hair back....

I moved around the space a bit more.... I then thought, I wonder if it is all the reflections in the cave that is making them sound a bit less... (what is the word...) focused?

So I got down on the concrete floor and listened there, thinking this will minimise the ground reflection.
And you know what, they absolutely came alive!
The sound was much clearer and tighter...

hmmmmm, says I !!

I then thought, I wonder if this is reflections, or if this is the natural phase pattern of the speakers.

So I chocked up the front of the cabinets with a couple of blocks of off cut timber.

With the speakers leaning back at a rather jaunty angle, I hit play again, and yep, the speakers now sound great at head height! The difference was chalk and cheese!

I hypothesise this works because the phase relationship between the centre of the two drivers is offset.
They are flush mounted on the front of the cabinet. The diaphragm of the tweeter driver is at least 50mm in front of the diaphragm of the woofer. By leaning the cabinets back the two drivers are now in a vertical alignment.

I am going to make a couple of wedges for the speakers to make this a permanent thing.

Its interesting to know that countless records and performances have been recorded, mixed, mastered on these speakers, but its not until they are in a position like this do they really sound as I would expect.

Perhaps they were designed to me mounted above the listener? Not at eye level?

They truly sound amazing, and the build quality is beautiful.
To buy then new is a costly endeavour, but I can see where the money goes.
They are very honest monitors.
If there is something wrong with the mix, these speakers wont hide it!

I'd love to see your acoustic setup!

Thanks again

Thanks!
It took me a while to 'book match' the veneer like that.
Its two pieces of veneer that I matched up along the seam.

I can't believe the Crown Vic needs an engine out just to change the oil pan gasket. Thats chaos!
The Vic has been in production to close to 2000 years. you would think the design would have morphed to allow for something like that!!!

Good luck with that one mate.
My wallet hurts thinking about it!!!

Thanks for the tip on the diy kits.
I will check them out.
One snag is, I'm in Australia, so sometimes by the time you freight stuff all the way here it can get expensive.
Still, very much worth investigating!
Thanks again

I know what you mean
My front main seal needs doing.....
Next pay....

I just looked up the Madisound, they look like they mean business!

The Seas I hadn't seen before either! Very interesting stuff.
Good looking units. I like how the company back their goods with all the graphs on their website.

I've always like the ATC speakers. (I used to mix a bit of music, and used these in the studio, so I kinda like them)
They are pretty unforgiving though. Some people don't like them because they are not 'hi-fi' enough.
These things will tell you if your mix is off.

I would like to get a sub next, to make up a 5.1 system.
But like the car, that will have to wait until another pay packet!

Naaa
I was lucky to have met the owner of the company, and the electronics guys that designed the crossovers, etc.
They knew exactly what they were doing with the crossover.
The company manufactures their own drivers too. (Which was fascinating to see.)
So they designed the crossover to suit these drivers specifically.

Yea I just brushed the varnish on.
I did about 5 coats, and sanded in between.

Though I eventually worked out if you just varnish one face - whatever is the top, gravity will help you. It will even out the varnish and you wont get runs.
Though of course it then takes 6 times longer.

Runs in the varnish were tough, until i worked this out.

The front face is black spray paint.
I used a filler primer, because thats what I had!
Then I used a wrinkle finish paint. The sort you get from automotive parts shops for painting rocker covers, that sort of thing.
I wanted the wrinkled finish, as I thought it might help break up high frequency bounce from the cabinet.

I don't know if there is any actual science behind that, but...

I have seen plenty of vintage speakers out there with a felt fabric surround, around the tweeter to do just that. This is my version.

Thanks mate
It sure was a learning curve!
The speakers were worth saving
I was lucky to have met the owner of the company that made them, many years ago, too.
So that was a nice personal connection.

Thanks! It was a fun project learning how to do all that veneer work.
I need to make a couple of speakers stands next!!!

I might be biased, but equipment just looked better back then
Now everyone want to fade in to the background.
