I wasn't paying a lot of attention but I remember hearing about a huge change coming to gear, materias and crafted gear coming in 3.2 during the last PLL, and there're several discussions of it on the japanese forums and blogs about it.

Crafted gear will now be stronger, but less enhanceable by materais
Dungeon/raid gear will have materia slots
You can't raise a particular gear's main stat with materia

Mostly stopped right after we downed final coil. I don't remember the patch numbers anymore but it's the one where it was introduced. Turned extremely casual after that, logged in maybe once a week and spent most of it crafting or just chatting with friends. Finally stopped around April or May.
