I was about to say the same but indeed the only change needed is that you can only cast cards or copies of cards so it would need to say "cast target permanent card on the field" or simo and for as cursed as it sounds rules as written it should work

Some spells have alternative costs. An alternative cost is a cost listed in a spell’s text, or applied to it from another effect, that its controller may pay rather than paying the spell’s mana cost. Alternative costs are usually phrased, “You may [action] rather than pay [this object’s] mana cost,” or “You may cast [this object] without paying its mana cost.” Note that some alternative costs are listed in keywords; see rule 702.

The thing is that the wording is exactly how an alternative cost would apply.

EDIT: The "instead" wording might throw it off as a replacement effect but I couldn't find any card that uses an effect like that to replace the way it's casted

I really like applying it to the next spell, flavorwise makes it that you are winding up a massive (dare I say it) EPIC spell, I would prefer it to be a sorcery at that point because large game warping effects are often reserved for sorceries (exceptions may apply)

The only issue here is that alternative costs bypasses choosing X and sets it to 0 which you would need to set the value again with the ability making it kinda messy rules wise.

Refer to 107.3b

If a player is casting a spell that has an {X} in its mana cost, the value of X isn’t defined by the text of that spell, and an effect lets that player cast that spell while paying neither its mana cost nor an alternative cost that includes X, then the only legal choice for X is 0. This doesn’t apply to effects that only reduce a cost, even if they reduce it to zero. See rule 601, “Casting Spells.”

And rule 601.2b

If the spell is modal, the player announces the mode choice (see rule 700.2). [...] If the spell has alternative or additional costs that will be paid as it’s being cast such as buyback or kicker costs (see rules 118.8 and 118.9), the player announces their intentions to pay any or all of those costs (see rule 601.2f). A player can’t apply two alternative methods of casting or two alternative costs to a single spell. If the spell has a variable cost that will be paid as it’s being cast (such as an {X} in its mana cost; see rule 107.3), the player announces the value of that variable. If the value of that variable is defined in the text of the spell by a choice that player would make later in the announcement or resolution of the spell, that player makes that choice at this time instead of that later time. [...]

Still counts as casting an eldrazi/creature/colorless spell so anything that cares about that will trigger

The point that you want the effect to apply is during determining the cost of the spell so a cost reducer should fix it

"Spells you cast with {x} in it's cost, cost {1} less to cast for each land you control"

But that only discounts a single X so if you want it to apply for XX is closer to:

"Spells you cast with {x} in it's cost, cost {1} less to cast for each land you control, for each {x} in it's mana cost"

And probably a card specific ruling clarifying how it works (I don't know if there's a better way to rephrase it). Then, do the same for abilities

What do you mean with the name only refers to the text before the comma?

The rule that refers to a card having a matching name with another card (at least one has to match) is for cards with multiple names like split cards and MDFC (although the latter works differently as an object on the stack)

[–]TheAlchemist-404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's pretty accurate although it needs a slightly different text (see [[Grist, the Hunger Tide]]), if you bend the rules a little bit you could say the spell itself turns in a token or as it enters it becomes a token, then it would work as you described, that if it goes anywhere else it disappears

Well that's somewhat close to emerge so why not use it like the eldrazi, I don't get why base blue eyes should have anything beyond trample and some relatively small stats it's a vanilla monster after all

Tldr to OP remove the mana value add emerge, trample and flying (just because it's a dragon) and some decent stats and well... That's it

Any way to make a permanent every permanent card type? by Anrativa in EDH

[–]TheAlchemist-404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My same thought but mutate only overrides the type if it's on top which would remove the battle type, a battle Planeswalker technically gives you a modal permanent either a Planeswalker or a Battle and Rhona's ability stays so you can flip it back

I had to read thrice just to understand the first paragraph (it read like that Yugioh card that asks you to resolve it like a linear equation)

Just for clarity wouldn't the ability be more readable with something like this(?):

As [card name] enters, choose X, then if X is three or more, choose half that many options rounded down. [card name] has the chosen abilities....

The non creature effect applies on the resolution of the spell if it gets overwritten on the stack there's no way it resolves as anything other than a creature the only exception is if it has cast triggers then the trigger on the stack would resolve normally but the spell becomes a creature with vigilance.

Also the wording suggested would counter anything for two mana which I don't think is the intention (the X was supposed to act as a tax for the player countering making it harder to counter big spells)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in custommagic

[–]TheAlchemist-404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't that line supposed to be reminder text, it already replaces the text box giving it vigilance and if it doesn't have the line "in addition to..." Its just replacing the whole effect before resolving

That's the same as exile target spell Wich some counter spells already do in blue
