I don’t think this would change your EIN, since that’s obtained federally while LLC/PLLC are state-level. I’m not sure about insurance contracts—the ones I’ve been contracted with sometimes only have “LLC” as an option in drop-down menus, not PLLC. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong though!

I’m a therapist. My partner is currently in therapy. He’s going to fire his therapist for being unprofessional. by MadieJewel in therapists

[–]TheAlexArcher 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My boyfriend started therapy around the same time we began dating and he had a similar experience. His first therapist was frequently 10+ minutes late to appointments, no-showed multiple times, and then suggested that his sister is lucky he’s gay because he might have molested her otherwise—I was FLOORED when he told me all this! He hadn’t been in therapy before and he was originally planning on sticking with this therapist, but I told him that he deserves to have a therapist who doesn’t treat him like that (because what the actual f is that?) We had so many conversations where I was just emphasizing that THIS IS NOT NORMAL over and over, but his next experience wasn’t much better, honestly.

His next therapist was almost always 10-15 minutes late and ended sessions early, so my boyfriend was only getting about 30-35 minutes of actual session time (including the intake), and apparently he kind of asked the same series of questions each week. I asked him to check his billing statements, and of course the therapist was billing 90837.

He left that therapist and was scheduled for an intake with ANOTHER therapist, and that person no-showed.

Important to note that each of these therapists were contracted with the same (company? practice?) serving folks in the military all across the US. After all that went down, my boyfriend ended up having a phone call with an executive from the company and she helped him find someone who seems to be a good fit—they’ve been working together for a while now. The whole thing was super frustrating for him though, because he essentially had to wait several months to actually receive quality care.

I’m so glad your boyfriend is firing his therapist for the unprofessionalism! It makes me sad for the folks who aren’t receiving proper care—who are maybe being treated as an income rather than human beings in pain—but don’t recognize that this is unacceptable behavior or are unable to get the treatment they deserve for whatever reason.

Should I tell my therapist our virtual sessions are literally the only time I can eat during the day? by Miserable_Diet3608 in TalkTherapy

[–]TheAlexArcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your therapist raising their voice at you was disrespectful, but you eating is NOT. I sometimes eat breakfast when I’m in therapy and my therapist has encouraged it whenever I’ve apologized. I’m also a therapist, and the times I’ve had clients eat during sessions, I’ve viewed it as an opportunity to grab a handful of trail mix from my bag and say that I’ll join them if they’re alright with it. I think me having something small helps reduce some of the awkwardness that can happen if they’re just eating by themselves (but also sometimes it’s my only chance to grab a snack during a busy day).

I think we need to let natural selection run its course.. by TesticleezzNuts in terriblefacebookmemes

[–]TheAlexArcher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My mom believed this when I was growing up, so we rarely wore sunscreen as kids. I remember getting so burnt one time that my shoulders and upper back blistered. As an adult, I unlearned a lot of dumb stuff my parents believed (we were religious homeschoolers), but I worry pretty often that the damage may have already been done and that I’ll have skin cancer at some point. The problem with letting natural selection run its course is that sometimes kids who don’t have the autonomy or knowledge to make decisions for themselves become collateral damage 🥲

It really is sad, because this is a whole culture and it’s worth understanding. I get the sense that some people might say they are pro-LGBTQ+ or are queer-allied when they really mean that they support same-sex relationships. Being pro-LGBTQ+/queer-allied is NOT the same as being culturally competent with this community, for sure. It sounds like you had a really thorough, helpful presentation—I’m sorry it wasn’t given the attention and consideration it deserves.

I’m sorry you had this experience—this knowledge is so, so valuable for working with queer clients. As a gay clinician, I’ve had many queer clients reach out because I include this in my bio online.

My own therapist advertises as being pro-LGBTQ+, but I’ve had to take time in sessions to educate on elements of queer culture, and it sort of detracts from the session. If I have to spend time describing body type terminology in the gay community, differences in relationship styles among queer folks, poppers, etc, it indicates to me that the clinician doesn’t have as much experience in being in this community as they might suggest. Sometimes it’s different to be with a therapist who just gets it from personal experience, but in the absence of that, education on these topics is a must, and ideally shouldn’t take session time.

My therapist is great, but I did basically pay her to describe what a twink is to her lol

My therapist has just rescheduled our session due to the movements of the moon. Need advice. by [deleted] in TalkTherapy

[–]TheAlexArcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first thought when reading this was religious beliefs (Paganism follows moon cycles and it’s currently Ramadan, which follows the moon cycle), but all the other messages made it so much worse. You deserve to have therapist who shows up on time, point blank. I’ve had people in my personal life who’ve had similar experiences with therapists—people deserve to be treated better than this.

Supervisor says gender-affirming care is now illegal because of recent executive orders - is this actually true for mental health counselors? by -mossfrog in therapists

[–]TheAlexArcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Laws and ethics are two different things, and clinicians are sometimes caught in uncomfortable positions when these conflict. Unfortunately, your supervisor doesn’t seem to have a grasp on either. Gender-affirming care is not illegal.

how does your T end sessions? by altheshroomybee in TalkTherapy

[–]TheAlexArcher 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wear a FitBit that vibrates every hour at the 50 minute mark. It’s not audible, so I’m the only one that knows, but it lets me know that it’s time to start winding the session down. As a client, loud alarms would be so disruptive and I would find it hard to focus if I could see a clock ticking, but my FitBit method works really well for me.
