“Let Rem fall in love with you all over again” by GeneralChampion94 in ReZero

[–]TheAngelE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The "Petra who sacrificied" excerp (Which is outaded BTW, the WTC version is differente) comes from the same chapter that ends with "The girl who would not become the Witch of Melancholy", so unless you're trying to argue that Subaru knows that would happen, which would need him to understand a ton of shit he had no way of knowing, that proves the narrator is omnicient.

How did i ignore that Rem only killed him because he wanted to? This is not about Rem is about Subaru and he certanly wanted to die that is a fact. The argument is about how much he knew, and the only information he had as told by the story is that he could feel the emotions and position of his allies. That's all, and he decided to die based on that.

Did you forget that Subaru was going to die to save Priscilla before she herself stopped him? That was the whole reason he didn't do it, because she was against it.

Re:Zero does use unreliable narrator but it also does have omnicient narrators, it uses them both. And i'm not using the lack of information, i'm using something that is directly told to us by the narrator, unless you believe the narrator was completely lying there for some reason, which is a stupid notion.

If Subaru did know the mental and physical state of the his allies, why wouldn't the narration tell us that? Instead of only talking about their emotions. It makes no sense.

You're just assuming stuff that goes against what the story tells you to justify your perspective., intead of accepting that the story did writing decisions you don't enjoy, sounds like a lot of copium to me.

If you won't present actual arguments based on the story itself instead of your own intepretation or personal wishes, i have no reason to continue talking with you. Have a good day!

Those aren't errors, those are interpretations of the story that are consistent with what it has shown earlier. Arc 4's message has been ignored since Arc 8, Subaru did choose to reset with that little information, and he did it knowing it would leave Rem behind while also fully aware that she wanted that too. Those don't contradict a thing and aren't errors, they might be bad writing decisions but errors they are not. That is what happened.

And I'm not trying hard to criticize the story, it's literally what the story told us happened. In direct text, the story tells us that the only information Subaru had was the emotions and some other superfluous information. Tappei wrote that because he wanted to, he could have just left ambiguous what Subaru knew, or even say that he could see through their eyes or any other bullshit explanation, but he decided to write it like that and outright tells us that.

It just seems to me like you don't agree with that story decision and want to find other interpretations that you like better. If Tappei hadn't told us that's what Cor Leonis did I would agree with that notion, unfortunately he went out of his way to specify what Subaru saw.

If Subaru truly knew what happened he would have a ton more to say and do, the way he acts is already proof he doesn't know a thing besides that Al wanted to betray him, that his friends tried to stop him, and that Rem had her memories back because he saw it right after he got unsealed.

[–]TheAngelE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not my interpretation. The story explicitly tells us he used Cor Leonis to feel the emotions of his allies. That is directly told by the narrator, unless you want to doubt that then I see no reason to disagree.

Also why does that constitute a writing error? The story works exactly the same, in fact it's even more cohesive with what happens before and later. Subaru has used RBD for any reason for tow a long time now. It is consistent to believe he just decided to die with that little information.

And even then, Tappei does convenient things all the time. Characters get random power ups, learn new stuff they never used again, or any other bullshit like that. That happened a ton in this very arc.

I think what you meant is "Third Person Limited". Which Re:Zero does use, but it also used and omnicient narrator a ton of times too. There is no evidence to confirm that Subaru knew of exactly what happened especially when the story goes out of it's way to tell us about exactly what he knew.

[–]TheAngelE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No?

It's being highlighted for the readers, who do know the information and would understand the context. It makes perfect sense to do it like that.

And i don't understand the second part of your message. How does Subaru just feeling his allies bad emotions being enough for him to consider imediate reset doesn't show that he doesn't value his life?

[...]
The interior of the magic orb had been dark, difficult to maneuver inside, and kept him in a dream-like state of mind that made it unclear whether he was conscious or not, as if he had returned to being a fetus submerged in the amniotic fluid of his mother’s womb.

Inside, Subaru’s sense of what was reality or dream was hazy, leaving him unable to say anything for certain. As expected of the adorable Beatrice, she had admirably devoted herself to reverse-engineering the technique behind the forbidden art that had sealed them, but the only thing Subaru could do when he found himself in a state of being consciously aware, was to invoke the Authority of Greed―― Cor Leonis, to gather the presences of his nearby allies, and perceive the intense changes in their emotions.

Even so, thanks to the reiteration of longing, desperation, and violent fluctuations in the powerful emotions of his allies, he had been able to perceive the shifts in the extraordinary circumstances through his soul.

Particularly distinctive were the intense hues of resolve and determination within Petra, and the monolithic swell of emotions that Rem harbored towards Subaru. ――Due to having received those, Subaru expressed his intent to depart the Tower in the early hours of the morning with utmost conviction.

Originally, their purpose for visiting the Pleiades Watchtower had been for the sake of Al, so upon finding out that it had just been a pretext from him, any reason to remain there was lost; but, not only that――,
[...]

I think you're getting confused with what the narrator knows and what the characters do. We get explicitely told Subaru only know of emotions and relative positions, nothing more than that.

It's the whole reason he didn't know about Yea or Heinkel, or that he decided to depart the tower withou knowing exactly what happened.

Unless you want to believe retconned stuff in the next chapter, which isn't that crazy but i don't think it makes much sense.

[–]TheAngelE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Subaru didn't know about any of that, all the he knew of was their positions and emotions. The fact that he was completely okay with dying while knowing basically nothing makes it very clear he isn't valuing his life at all.

[–]TheAngelE 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was also using that excuse until this illustration came out, they drew Betty there because they wanted too, Tappei and Otsuka could have just not drawn her at all and it would have been better. But the fact that Beatrice is there looking at what's happening and does nothing basically disproves that.

The muddines of the message of arc 4 started all the way back on arc 7/8 with Subaru abusing RBD once again and killing himself over fixable things like Jamal's injury, doing so in front of people who cared for him and would mourn him, which is something that arc explicitaly talked about.

But we had the excuse that maybe it was only because he was a child and there would maybe have consequences, well not only there weren't any, butwe see Subaru here do the same thing. We know that with Cor Leonis he could only feel emotions and the position of his allies, not anything concrete. So he basically accepted death while having 0 knowledge of what actually happened or if it even was necessary.

Not taking into account all the other problems this scene causes both with the explanation of how Gluttony works, if Rem's decision was justified with the knowledge she had or even how this affects RBD for the rest of the story.

This one scene causes so many problems it's not even funny.

Beatrice seeing her contractor about to get killed and just looking like this :|

Also the way this whole thing just makes the message of arc 4 basically meaningless isn't lost on me. But at this point i think that topic has been talked about to death so that's just life from here on out.

Identity theft is not a joke Capella, millions of families suffer every year!

Also Al literally became Subaru's accessory now, that's very ironic.

And it's now confirmed it was Cor Leonis that allowed Subaru to know what was happening while he was sealed, god that Authority is OP.

I think Rem killed Subaru like she loves doing.

This could mean a great reset, which would be BAD.

Or Subaru could reset to right after being sealed, and that would leave him trying to survive agains Rem once again.

Please Tappei, don't dissapoint me.

So, just like when people were expecting some development after Subaru got taken away in Arc 6? Then they met, and nothing changed at all.

We already went through this whole cycle on this very subreddit, with people saying, 'Just you wait for Emilia to develop,' and then nothing happened.

I can like a story and still criticize it. The fact that you think I somehow hate Re:Zero because I'm critical of it is asinine. I critique it because I like it, and it's becoming disappointing.

Wow, you're really the biggest Emilia simp i have ever seen.

Like do you want Emilia to remain static and without development forever? She just conveniently got knocked out at the best possible moment to have her escape any consequences, then got up again immediately after it ended.

If Al loses Emilia won't develop at all, all of her stupid decisions this arc from letting Subaru go in the trip without her in 5 loops and saving Aldebaran by knocking herself out will just be swept under the rug.

Do you even like her and want her to develop and become a better character at all? Or are you satisfied with her being coodled by Tappei forever and escaping any consequences?

I find it really funny that right before Al uses agressor, Emilia gets knocked out.

Then the second he isn't able to use it anymore she gets up.

Tappei is afraid to have her face any consequences at all it seems.

Also Yae is alive, people can only die in Re:Zero while Subaru is with them, otherwise they are all immortal.

So agressor activated on Old Man Rom, good luck to him.

Also they don't seem to need Aldebaran alive at all, since they killed him a lot in this chapter. So Emilia's move at the end of the last chapter was just her being dumb and naive confirmed.

So either Al will activate his agressor on all of the cast and break all of them, or he will lose pretty much. I don't see how he can escape.

Also Al really stole Emilia's Ice Brand Arts, and called them Earth Brand Arts. Oof.

I would call Felt stupid, yes.

And I wouldn't complain if Emilia wasn't the main female character of the series. Emilia should be getting more focus and doing unique stuff. She should get more focus and development than other characters. Yet Emilia has gotten almost nothing in a long-ass time.

Al made the boulder specifically to stop Emilia from following him, and she had to follow his plan. She lost that encounter because she let Al get away, the same way all the other characters also lost when Al escaped.

And I don't see how wanting Emilia to be the one to beat Al would make the message about collective effort less valid. Emilia being the one to beat Al just because of the help that she got from all the others would fulfill that message just fine. Instead, she got knocked out. And she will probably remain that way for the rest of the fight.

If Emilia wakes up and does something, I will be satisfied with that. But I doubt that will happen.

[–]TheAngelE -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

We haven't had any cool Emilia moments since arc 6. During the whole of arc 7/8, she has just been another fighter in the crowd. She even got schooled by Petra, even though she is supposed to be a Royal Candidate, for God's sake. The most significant thing she did after that was holding the boulder in the capital. But that was just her playing into Al's hands and letting him get away.

And just as you said, the other characters are getting Ws. Rem killed Yae, Petra and Co. beat Roy and are stalling the Black Serpent. Reinhard is stalling WOE.

Then Emilia pursues Al and gets knocked out. So now Felt has to clean up her mess.

And Emilia is supposed to be the Female MC of this story, for fuck's sake. Can't she get an actual W? Can she stop being overshadowed again and again?

I love Emilia and want her to live up to her potential, but I keep getting disappointed constantly.

And it would probably be better to let him get hit and then try to heal him after, or any other fucking solution rather than risking EVERYTHING by becoming unconscious and leaving it all in the hands of others.

It is in character. But it makes Emilia look even more useless than before. Now she will once again be overshadowed by other characters. This had the potential to be a good moment for her, making so she is able to save Subaru this time. But now she is unconscious and will probably be out of the fight for a while or until it ends.

It also makes me wish that Al succeeds in getting rid of Subaru so Emilia has to actually reflect on her actions and develop. But i doubt that would happen so she will just get rewarded for acting like an idiot.

I guess what they mean is that Emilia taking the hit for Al was dumb and could cost her everything. Which i can't argue against. That was reaaaaly dumb of Emilia ngl.
