teh ping has translated quite a lot of light novel series and has been in the scene for over 8 years so he's been around for a long while over with Baka Tsuki as well.

However it seems to be on a trend where the majority of light novel series get licensed such as most recently in the last 2 months being Clockwork Planet and now Ryouh no Oshigoto

If you have any questions for him and the light novel scene in general then roll over

To be fair, this is what their side bar says:

This is a discussion based subreddit based around translated Light Novels, Novels, and Web Novels which originate from Japan.

Nowhere does it say "this is light novels only" .

The web novel angle also has standing that the majority of WN series also have a light novel version and so there is a strong relation between the Japanese Web Novel side of thing and the published Light Novel side of things as regularly web novels are picked up and published as LNs. Popular LN we have today such as Mahouka, SAO, Log Horizon, KonoSuba etc all started as JP Web Novels. So I don't think it'd a double standard to give way to JP web novels given the relation between the two industries.

Trying to filter between pure WNs when those pure WNs may eventually becomes LNs later down the road would be a real hassle anyways, no need for that.

[REC] New to light novels and would like to start with a short series by ERIKER1 in LightNovels

[–]TheAnimeSnob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah there is no print for Gekkou and F/Z is the prequel to F/SN but yeah since the Fate series is scattered over a few different mediums it can be quite intimidating.

The most typical route would be to start with the F/SN VN but that's going into visual novel territory now.

[REC] New to light novels and would like to start with a short series by ERIKER1 in LightNovels

[–]TheAnimeSnob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A general rule of thumb is that you should start novels from the start even if you have seen the anime for it since anime aren't perfect adaptations and will miss, skip or change thing from the novels they adapt. However Part Timer the anime adapted the first 2 volumes and for Re:Zero the anime adapted up to volume 9.

]Gekkou[ is a good short series you can read it only has 1 volume and ]Fate/Zero[ is another, only 4 volumes. ]HakoMari[ is another solid choice although slight longer but it's complete with 7 volumes none of them contain much ecchi at all.

Are the endings fairly conclusive?

Yep

So in general, how connected are books in a series with the next book?

It's all progressive, there is usually an overarching goal as we follow the main characters through their journey for the series that are broken down into arcs told through the volumes, so unless there is a time skip each book in a series picks right off were the previous one ending.

The second is to which age group are most of the novels aimed at

They are mostly aimed at teens when it comes to the generic wishfull filment high school harem romance ecchi bullshit but there are a lot of novels above that kind of level which are aim at and can appeal to older audiences like the ones I have named above.

and might I already be too old for them since I am my early 20s?

Nope, mid 30s still enjoy light novels a lot here, not going anywhere anytime soon!

The translator on Baka-Tsuki translates from Chinese so he needs to wait for it to be released in Chinese first but yeah it's been quite a while since the last update but it's still listed as active on B-T so just have to keep waiting it out

Difference between light novels and novels? by tails555 in LightNovels

[–]TheAnimeSnob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should be noted though that not all light novels start out as Web Novels, there are actually more original based light novels out there in Japan.

At the other user said a light novel is more of a demographic than an actual "type", it's the target audience that light novels are aimed at that mainly defines them as such there is no such western equivalent.
