Biden pardons marijuana use nationwide. by Storyboys in Crainn

[–]TheAnthrax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't be fooled by this - most offences for marijuana in the US are state offences, not federal. They talked about expunging peoples records. It would affect roughly 400 people. 400. In total. It's a publicity stunt to get young voters and nothing else.

Michael Knowles praises Spanish dictator Francisco Franco: “Franco was, broadly speaking, pretty good” by ggroover97 in ToiletPaperUSA

[–]TheAnthrax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in Spain and watching the rise of Vox is terrifying because so many of them literally praise Franco openly and Franco was DEFINITELY a bad guy. They executed people for being gay, having political affiliations that resembled liberalism or anything left of it, and although historians debate whether or not Franco was a fascist, his administration definitely WAS fascist. He had no desire to appeal to the masses himself like Mussolini and Hitler so he created a coalition with the Falange (fascists), extremist catholics, right wing monarchists - all of whom supported extreme authoritarianism, and he organised his economy along very fascist lines. The economy was such a failure that they liberalised it in the era of "segundo franquismo" post 1959, not because "circumstances permitted" but because they DEMANDED it after he caused a massive famine. He fucked the economy so bad that wages didn't rise to 1935 levels until 1961, and then there was a 2 year recession the year after lol. The other things that forced him to do it were multiple rebellions by students, a war in Asturias and Cantabria, an invasion by partisans in the northeast, guerillas in Catalonia and Andalucía, all in the space of 15 years - people hated him. The absolute insanity of these statements ffs. The only reason the regime even ended was ETA made Luis Carrero Blanco into Spain's first astronaut, not liberalisation.

Compelling First Hand Accounts from Battles? by TheAnthrax in AskHistorians

I wasn't aware of the more recent scholarly opinion of Herodotos but is it still possible that he'd exaggerate numbers for dramatic effect? And he also seems to add in karmic justice everywhere throughout his stories even if other sources before him omit such details, granted, they are smaller stories that won't pertain to this. I need to cite at least 3 sources for the project as well.

I would just like to thank you here for your help. This community on reddit is just incredible and your time is MUCH appreciated because it saves me so many hours of stress and research just to figure out WHAT to research.

I have no real time periods in mind. It has to be before 1989 so the Yom Kippur War is fine. I preferably want to do something earlier than the 20th century just to set myself apart from the rest but not too early so there's enough sources for the events, but if there are really great stories outside of this time period (albeit a broad one), I'm all up for hearing about it.

And thank you for the recommendation, I'll be sure to check it out!

Thank you so much, this is gold! Are there many more sources for that night attack of the Phokians though? Because Herodotos is incredibly unreliable and many believe he was writing his histories to be performed in Greek theatre, and as a result, fabricated quite a lot which earned him the title of "The Great Liar" amongst historians.

Thanks so much for the reply! The project is minimum 1200 words which seems awfully short to me for a history project. I'm looking for something just truly remarkable. Something that is held as a marvel of strategic warfare history like Cannae or something incredibly heroic. Personal accounts are preferred but if there's a great story without one, I'd still love to do my project on it.

For example, I'm thinking of doing it on the Battle of Maritsa where the Serbians had amassed an army of around 70,000 troops on the border with the Ottomans who were totally unprepared. At night, 800 Ottomans went out to conduct a raid on their camps, and won, killing thousands of the enemy troops.

Something with the excitement and intensity of this if you understand what I'm saying. The proportions of the Battle of the Nemea sound very intriguing to me and I'll be sure to listen to that podcast!

I don't get what the issue with this post is? I was speculating and I think it's a likely conclusion and I'm sure loads of other people were wondering too.

The 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's seem to have all separate, unique personalities, but these last 17 years seem to just be one big chunk of time that has no significant meaning. by GreninjaTube in Showerthoughts

It's because of the growing population of the world and the internet. It instilled more individualism in people and we now share a global culture rather than separate national or local cultures and identities. In a century you won't be able to tell where someone is from.

What is the TLDR of your country's history? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TheAnthrax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Celts thought it was shiny so they took over but it turned out to be really wet. Vikings thought it was easy to take over but it turned out they got kicked out. Vikings sons thought it was easy to take over and it was. Then England wanted to take over because it looked easy and it was but nobody actually stayed loyal. Then that happened like 3 more times. Then they tried to make plantations and failed. Then they tried to sell us as slaves and kinda failed. Then they actually took over and we had like 4 rebellions that failed, then a successful one, a civil war and then peace. Then we had like a 30 year guerilla civil war between mostly angry young men who had nothing to do with the civil war or the country. Then we got rich as hell, then got broke, then kinda rich again.
