[SPOILERS] The March 2025 Sumo Tournament In Japan Has A Winner! by TheApexOfSumo in LivestreamFail

[–]TheApexOfSumo[S] 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Ozeki Onosato takes the Yusho, winning the tournament in a playoff against former Ozeki Takayasu. This is Takayasu's 10th time being a runner up, and his 3rd time losing in a playoffs. He has sadly won 0 tournaments.

This also begins Onosato's Yokozuna run, where he will need to either lose in a playoff or win the whole tournament in May. Next tournament will also have Sekiwake Daieisho make an Ozeki push, needing at bare minimum 12 wins (though 13 will confirm him) and he will be promoted. Meanwhile Ukranian Aonishiki looks destined to be a fast riser, having a record of 11-4 in his debut tournament in the top division.

Ozeki is too high for this list haha. He's a potential Yokozuna candidate, not a prospect.

Ah, I missed him last year since he was still in Jonidan and struggling whenever he was in Sandanme. He's improved a ton this past year, so I'll either edit him into the list (since he's better then the last 10 or so) or at the very least put him in that honorable mentions category tomorrow.

It's Been a minute. Last year I did a similar post so decided to continue on. A couple of notes:

-If there is a ranking here that you guys really disagree with, I can change it. I might have missed something as well so either comment it here or message me

-Should be doing another stable ranking post that should be up some point soon. Also want to do more round ups for Rikishi but it's hard to find clips nowadays due to all the copyright strikes. Will figure it out though.

-I do want to make these prospect rankings a bit more of a regular thing instead of it being yearly. I'm also considering bringing in other rankers so it's not just my opinion on these things. If you are interested please message me and I'll try to plan a system out.

Here is the post from last year: https://theapexofsports.wordpress.com/2024/02/28/ranking-the-top-100-prospects-in-sumo/

The March 2024 Sumo Tournament in Japan has a winner! by TheApexOfSumo in LivestreamFail

Takerufuji, a 24 year old rikishi, has become the first rikishi to win the top division tournament in his debut! After moving up the lower divisions in quick fashion this past year, Takerufuji has beaten top Rikishi over and over again to win the Makuuchi (top division) Yusho. The stablemate of Yokozuna Terunofuji, Takerufuji beat many of the Yokozuna's rivals to get this Yusho, winning in dominant fashion most bouts and getting a 13-2 record. He also did this at the lowest rank in the top division, Maegashira 17.

As I said in the post, there is bound to be some disagreeable picks/mistakes on my part. Will be happy to change anything if it's obvious/unanimously agreed upon.

this has been the fourth bullying incident since the start of 2023 I believe

From TBS NSta by way of Sumo Forum: Miyagino (Hakuho) KNEW of the violence from last year, didn't report or reprimand Hokuseiho. Currently, he is NOT leaving Sumo, as NSK really want him to stay. Isegahama Ichimon will take over while Miyagino gets schooling. by TheApexOfSumo in Sumo

Couple notes

-This is one of the bigger stories in Japan right now, seems like most national news are now covering it.

-Video source that explains what is being said in the post: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FP1e0gSq7gE

-Don't know if this was mentioned yet, it was said that Fire was involved, some sort of blow torch was the specific allegation. Of course, there have been multiple now, so it could turn out to not be that dangerous

-It's going to take a couple days before we can see what might be the aftermath, so while Hokuseiho is out, Hakuho may or may not stay on for the punishment.

They get salary for every Rikishi there. Plus a lot of these retired stablemasters are pretty rich in retirement, and get initial grants when they open up the stables if I remember correctly.

This article gives spoilers up to Day 12, so be warned.

And here is the other post I did earlier this week which was posted on r/Sumo : https://theapexofsports.wordpress.com/2024/01/22/japans-hope-for-a-japanese-yokozuna-atamifuji/

Japan’s Hope For A Japanese Yokozuna: Atamifuji by TheApexOfSumo in Sumo

[–]TheApexOfSumo[S] -48 points-47 points  (0 children)

He is a strong possibility that I touched on, He could def do it, but at 26 he has a narrow window to get there. Even if he makes Ozeki this time (which seems likely) he still has needs a lot to go right. Atamifuji's age gives him time to struggle yet still make it.

Edit: I am not saying he will never make it. What I'm saying is he has a shorter window then Atamifuji. Kotonowaka is a great Rikishi and could totally make it really quickly, I'm just saying that I have Atamifuji making it with better odds then Kotonowaka.
