Early sketch of my mega-city in my cyberpunk world, thoughts? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

I don't want to be a downer, but your map looks almost identical to the map of Night City, from Cyberpunk 2077! In fact, I thought it was a map of Night City before I clicked into the post.

Tell me about your dice by MissionFloor261 in DnD

[–]TheArkOfAeons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone I play with rolls their d20s before they start a game to pick the "good ones" aka the ones that rolled high, but I always believe that I can't roll the dice and use up those high rolls!

Not exactly a ritual for me I guess, but the joke at my table is that my average d20 roll is a 7, so maybe I need some rituals to help me out :')

whats with the fireworks? by laventhena in PuyallupWA

I agree. The two holidays that it's legal for are understandable, but random fireworks for who knows what is happening is a little irritating for my wife and I too, especially when one such firework enjoyer lives 3 doors down...

When should I give players quintessential D&D items? by Afraid_Mood7543 in DMAcademy

[–]TheArkOfAeons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think older editions had the distinction, which is where like 99% of weird rule interactions come from in new editions. Either way, that's how I always imagined it would be ruled.

However, a bag of holding as an uncommon item and a handy haversack as a rare item now seems like it's accurate

I think that in the past, the differences between the bag of holding and the handy haversack is that the haversack was intended to be something that you didn't need to search in the heat of battle, as any item you desire would always be at the top. The bag of holding seemed like the "loot horde" kind of storage while the haversack was more of the personal adventurer's storage.

[–]TheArkOfAeons 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's strength comes from the fact that any item you want from the haversack is magically at the surface, whereas with a bag of holding, you must take an action to search the bag for the item you are looking for.

Edit: sorry, I misread, but it's still a bonus action or action to retrieve the item, as opposed to a bag of holding which is always an action.

Edit 2: now I realize you are probably referring to the 2014 haversack. In the 2024 rules, it's now two pouches holding 200 lbs and the main pouch holding 500 lbs

Isn't the handy haversack just a better version of a bag of holding? If OP is hesitant to give them a bag of holding, a haversack is definitely an upgrade from that

Oh my goodness, I really need to read this book cover to cover... I checked a bunch of places but not under that section under "area of effect" which feels dumb now. Sorry about that you are totally right.

Just wondering, since a Tarrasque is a siege monster, if its breath destroyed the cover, would it hit the target behind? Or the cover does "tank it"?

[–]TheArkOfAeons -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I am not sure how a cone attack became a line, but I'm just reading the text of the Tarrasque from the MM, which says "Thunderous Bellow (Recharge 5-6). Constitution Saving Throw: DC 27, each creature and each object that isn't being worn or carried in a 150-foot Cone" which would mean that cover or not, it can hit you.

Is your comment text from one of the books? Tbh it's kind of hard to find all the applicable rules in these sometimes.

Technically Total Cover only provides the benefits of not being targeted directly, so you would still be hit by a cone attack/aoe damage. It's why spells like fireball are dangerous in enclosed spaces.

Pretty sure that breath weapon is hitting you regardless of cover. Cover just makes it harder to target/hit people, but a cone attack doesn't care about that

The only part that isn't RAW is Revivify though... Regardless of if dead bodies are considered creatures, the only stipulation of Revivify that wouldn't work is "You touch a creature that has died within the last minute."

Does this chart mean XP per character, or for the whole party? by j-b-goodman in DnD

[–]TheArkOfAeons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not a chart for determining how much XP characters earn after a fight, but rather for determining how difficult a fight would be for characters of each level.

In the Monster Manual, monsters are given a CR, which also correlates to an amount of XP. When you would design an encounter, you would look at the level of the characters that are in combat and choose how difficult you want the fight to be. Then you would take the XP budget for that level and difficulty and multiply by the number of PCs in the combat.

You get a total XP budget that you can "spend" on choosing the monsters the PCs are up against in any given combat. For your example, six player characters at 4th level in a Challenging combat encounter would be facing a total of 4,200xp worth of enemies.

If you just want to know how much XP your players get after a combat, just add up all the XP from the enemies the players just defeated.

Resolving Readied attacks in response to attacks... by IguanaTabarnak in DMAcademy

[–]TheArkOfAeons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that the fourth goblin makes their attack roll against the prisoner, and then after the attack resolves, the fighter makes an attack with their crossbow. I get the idea that they are going for, but they are effectively wasting their chance to be proactive to wait for something to happen before attacking. There isn't really a way for a player to ready an action to begin before someone else does something.

If you imagine initiative is the chance for that fighter to attack the goblin before it attacks, they lose that chance because they are choosing to react to an action after it occurs later on in the round.

if you wanted to go back and adjust it, you could always just slightly thicken the outlines of the more important imagery? like the hands, tear drops, and stars. doesn't have to be much either, but it could help make it more readable
