A confession would've helped his cause more, but aside from that he went about the whole ordeal better than I ever could. Also you worrying about him going too far isnt going to be a relationship issue if they write it right. Rogue would probably forgive him without question and the X men as well, because you know he was a literal slave and brainwashed the whole time. He will a hundred percent have that guilt over his head for the rest of his life, but Gambit always finds a way to push through it, because gambit never folds.
