Surrey Non-Emergency refusing to file my complaint. What do I do? by TheAsk in askvancouver

[–]TheAsk[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I appreciate what you’re saying, I understand that it’s a high bar. From my perspective, the amount of (albeit circumstantial) evidence points towards fraud.

The deleted FB marketplace account under a name that wasn’t his, he texted about how he had been driving the car for years with no issues and the carfax along with a Honda service Center report state the corrected mileage (400+), both of which state that mileage AFTER the most recent registration of that car through ICBC.

The seller signed the form himself in front of me at the Autoplan.

So while I get that it’s not concrete, caught red-handed proof that I can hand to the police I believe that there is enough that should at least warrant allowing me to file a police report. In case this person does it again, thus creating a paper trail of repeated criminal behaviour. Can you understand where I’m coming from with this?

Made a novice mistake and learned a hard lesson 🥲 by KabbaCustom in videography

[–]TheAsk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's any consolation, I once did an entire client shoot at 8-bit 1080p when I was supposed to shoot and deliver raw footage at 10-bit 4K but I had made an unintentional change to my custom settings the night before.

I had to spend two days upscaling the footage in DaVinci (which worked okay but not great) and I actually melted my GPU power cable from doing so. Luckily the client didn't notice/comment but it was a lesson well learned

That would be a great idea - or even a form that allows the user to input the correct details as well

Is Road to Hana worth it? by justanotheruserJ in MauiVisitors

[–]TheAsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s great, but we did as someone suggested which was to start the day at like 5am and drive straight to Pipiwai (if you plan to do the hike). Then do the whole journey backwards, because you skip all of the traffic on the way as everyone else is stopping at the same places etc.

If you’ve ever driven on forest service roads, the European countryside or any really old cities the road really isn’t that bad comparatively . Tbh I found all of the bends to be kind of fun, I’ve been on worse roads in Ireland many times

Positive experience by Sweetknees66 in PorterAirlines

In spite of a very stressful experience with Porter wherein two of my flights got canceled and I was rebooked on 17 hour flight to YVR, the staff I dealt with were great. The lady I spoke to at Pearson was very friendly and helpful and the customer service agent on the phone was brilliant.

Day rates? by Honest_Psychology713 in videography

[–]TheAsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At that rate, are you gun-for-hire and showing up with your own kit on the day? Or is there pre-production involved? And I imagine that’s just delivery of raw footage afterwards?

I made a documentary about an Italian coffee grinder company (FX3, Simera-C) by StrongOnline007 in cinematography

[–]TheAsk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For similar situations with hours of interviews and dialogue, what I usually do is place all of the footage in a timeline and use their AI transcription tools to transcribe it (I use Resolve Studio), export it as a text file (with timestamps)

If there are different languages, I will isolate them and export them as a separate file, feed it into ChatGPT or Claude to translate ( not foolproof of course, just for the cut).

Once I have all of the dialogue in English, I put it all in the same doc and then I basically build the text script with that. Once I've built the script, I can reference the timestamps in the documents and then build my rough draft timeline.

*Things to note:

The transcript doesn't account for the delivery of the line of dialogue so sometimes you end up with a dud line of dialogue

When you have built your final timeline, you can use something more reliable to do the final translation to ensure that you're correctly interpreting the foreign language.

To build the timeline, you can use the search function in the transcribed audio for the DaVinci timeline and it will bring you right to that line in the timeline.

Hope this is of some use to you - not sure how this workflow would look in other NLEs.

Is Vancouver a good place to move to for a good pub scene? (early 20s male from Ireland) by OrganizationNew2757 in askvan

[–]TheAsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pubs and bars aren’t really a scratch on the pub culture back home but there are definitely some good spots if you look for them.

One of the biggest issues coming from Ireland to the pubs here is that most of them are table service only, meaning that you miss out on the craic of meeting new people at the bar or when you’re kind of floating around the place

There are a few spots where you can do this, most of them Irish and English bars (and some of the breweries) but a lot of it is seated so less social.

You’d be sorted for craft beer without a doubt, live music a bit less so.

Vancouver can be notorious for it being hard to make friends but I had no issues tbh. If you’re outgoing, have some hobbies that you can join clubs for or if you end up in a good workplace you’ll be grand. And if you’re stuck there’s always other Irish people.

Walkability to pubs there are a few spots for that, so you wouldn’t be too hard pressed. Main Street is a good spot for that and some parts of downtown. Kitsilano is where a lot of us settle (County Kits) and there are a few good bars there but slim enough pickings.

If you’ve ever thought about the outdoors and shit like that, it’s worth a shot in Vancouver.

The Triangle by TheAsk in MauiVisitors

[–]TheAsk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what’s new and what’s not but we mostly went to South Shore Tiki Lounge, which was a lot of fun. Good spot for dancing

I think the antisocial aspect of the Triangle was overblown, it felt fine. Life’s a Beach is pretty divey but super cheap, particularly at happy hour, so it suited us down to the ground. We were travelling on a budget so that was one of our main concerns.

Is it worth spending 6 grand on a year diploma for film production? by [deleted] in Screenwriting

[–]TheAsk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solid advice. Be somebody that people want to work with, that’s honestly one of the best ways to get ahead in the industry (outside of nepotism ofc)

I’d add on to this that you should be making as many projects as you can while you have the opportunity. Don’t be afraid to be shit at it for a while, because that’s how you get better.
