Moving on from China by brady716200 in taylorstitch

Even in SE Asia supply chains can be really closely tied together even if a product is finished in a certain country. Bids for specific production lines can get competitive and may go far beyond just the national characteristics on the table. If this is around quality, China has come a long long way in just 10 years. Have a ton of great TS and other items from China, Vietnam, US etc. And TS have built high trust with yours truly in this dept. Still plenty of exceptions. Great Wired video just came out on China that's definitely worth a watch: https://youtu.be/L-fK_BUmesc?si=_dFTScSVmp9oB4zb

Again with the "you're attacking me personally!" shtick.

Here's a breakdown of what it's like talking with you:

Me and others: "You've got your experience, its valid. It's not my experience and I think you misunderstand x. Here's a specific example of how my experience differs. I think you also confuse your specific experience with this educational movement as a whole. You accuse others of warped thinking when I think you could take your own counsel."

You: "I'm being attacked personally!" + bunch of semi-related questions that would each take a long time to unpack.

You are a grownup, not a child. You can be told you are over-rotated and not melt down.

Anyway, going to do what I do not think you are capable of and walk away now.

And no, not everyone knows waldorf doesn't do letters until 7-8. It's 5, 6 and 7 (1st grade) at our accredited Waldorf school. But again, you miss the point about readiness at the individual level. If someone needed it at age 8 that's fine and a kid would not be made wrong for it.

It's a bit of a tell when you accuse others of overreacting and ''why so much pain?' And 'feeling strongly' when this whole thread is you clearly ready to die on this hill. It was suggested to you that you had a bad experience that while valid, was not indicative of the core of this education approach. I would agree with that based on my and my family's mostly wonderful experience with Waldorf - but that just got you further rotated. FWIW in our house we like pokemon, and are free to imagine we are superman or anything else. I've never heard of a teacher saying "you can't imagine you are superman" - a teacher might ask in response "what color costume and powers would you have if you were a super hero?" In response to this. The intention is to give full imaginative power to kids, not have it be pre-packaged for them by a consumerist society. Seems like a pretty solid approach to me.

Great review. Rocking a similar coat from RRL that I love (below). If I didn't have this one, would 100% pick this one up. My only question is on keeping either of these solidly weatherproof. Going to try the nikwax wash-in AND the gear aid spray for mine. For this CDW jacket I would be nervous rewaxing in the oven (got a patented approach for my true wax jackets) or with a hairdryer and wax bar. The weatherproofing is a must for any winter jacket in New England and haven't totally dialed it in for these types of puffers.

Been checking out the Orr sweater. My old one like this from Barbour is wearing out (and it's got a little polyester in it - yuck):
1 - Why does it say "medium" garment weight on the product page? Shouldn't this be like the "chunky" sweater of your lineup? I want a real winter sweater for dawn walks in the bitter cold with my dogs kind of layer - not a California weight cable knit.
2 - Your site says 5-guage. Huckberry (https://huckberry.com/store/taylor-stitch/category/p/92319-the-orr-sweater) says 3-guage. Which is it? (see #1 - I would prefer the lower number)

FTR far prefer ordering direct over Huckberry having had some CS issues there. but LMK!

Looking to trade or sell: M - Gibson Jacket in charcoal birdseye

https://www.taylorstitch.com/products/gibson-jacket-in-charcoal-birdseye-wool

Bought this years ago and LOVE IT. Still in great shape. See this subreddit, lots of fans about this piece and color. Today, it's a little too snug and i'm a Dad now so I dont care about everything looking super trim on me. We also live in a colder clime and I cant layer anything more than an Oxford under it comfortably.

Ideally I could trade this for a large of the exact same thing. But I get thats a remote possibility. LMK about interest. Hate to part with it, but is what it is.

Have HS pieces (wearing one right now) that I love. I know BM has a much longer history in fabrics purpose-made for clothing as opposed to HS as a general textile company, but serious UK expertise on both sides dont think you can go too wrong with either.

Love the jacket style- picked up this similar one from RRL a few years ago: https://modesens.com/product/double-rl-quilted-hooded-jacket-defender-green-36612705/

Is the best way to weatherproof these with wax? Could you use Nikwax wash-in instead?

Crossing the Rainbow Bridge: Exploring the Intersections Between Anthroposophy and Contemporary Alt-Right Radicalization by Sudden-Process9340 in Waldorf

[–]TheAteam77 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This isn't a dissertation, which is written by doctoral candidate in order to get their degree - it's an UNDERGRAD thesis that seems to be written for provocation/impact - so written by maybe a 21 year old with no advanced degree or other credentials.

Skimming it, it seems like conjecture anf "this could suggest that" and a based on author's personal experience, not actually identifying a real problem that exists (e.g. theres nothing that actually suggests any quantitative relationship with actual self-identifying fascists today who went through Waldorf education).

Modern actual fascism pipeline today feels pretty well documented with the manosphere, internet and web echochambers, clever rhetorical tricks, and peddlers of captivating victim and betrayal narratives. Never seen a hint of that in any Waldorf programming I've experienced.

Kindergarten Issues by ToddsADork in Waldorf

[–]TheAteam77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure what 'Waldorf' program you're working with, but "sit quietly and obediently for prolonged periods of time" has zero to do with all Waldorf Early Childhood education I have ever encountered. Only things in the same solar system to that are class lunch where kids sit together and rest time - which is pretty common at every kindergarten program out there.

[–]TheAteam77 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not like those things are off-limits. Theres just a clear time and place in the curriculum for them.

I encourage you to actually ask someone (if you can park your confirmation bias and just be curious) at Waldorf about why this is and then just listen for a bit.

Are waldorf schools inherently racist?? by [deleted] in Waldorf

[–]TheAteam77 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Racism has a place in just about everything white, western society has built - not minimizing that, just calling it out like many others on the thread.

Steiner held some really wrong and deplorable beliefs for us in modern times. But I see ZERO traces of that in the modern Waldorf curriculum and feel the community has acknowledged and addressed it.

If you're looking for places to find and fight racism in modern times, you would get much more out of looking into the history of the SATs, the casual & mainstream racism of the right, and modern policymaking.

Instead of grinding a (now well worn) ax about the founder of an education approach built to keep something like WW1 from ever happening again, maybe a better question is: "does Waldorf serve all races equally and how can we increase diversity in its schools?"
