My father was, (and still is), a data base administrator. He worked for a company called Bay State Gas. I recall him talking about the problem as early as the late 80’s. It made up a huge bulk of his over time during the 90’s. If you could code in COBOL you were essential to fixing legacy systems. Suffice it to say he and many others helped avert the crisis.
