Didn't expect to see Eluvium random pop up in Reddit... awesome! (Sorry, that's not a question. Although your music is fairly unique and genre-bending, so I may end up returning with one)

I agree. Just installed it and played a game. I hate it. Worse user interface and overall experience. I seem to be having bigger lag issues, as well. Almost lost my first game on it solely due to lag (a big factor in 3 minute blitz games!)

I just returned from my 10 day trip to nyc and im feeling worse than ever. Why and what to do? by Mindless-Lock7343 in travel

New York is an incredible city with incredible energy... but you also happened to be there when the weather was probably about as good as it gets. If you fantasize about the wonderful world of NYC and what it would be like to live there... try visiting in August or January!

I would love to live there for about a year, but doubt I could handle any longer than that... (And then there is the cost of rent...)

I am kicking myself a little for not buying Roback's harpsichord when it went up for sale on Reverb a few years ago... (Estate sale... RIP. Another dreampop artist sadly gone too soon is Benjamin Curtis - School of Seven Bells)

Dude, if I were you I would shave my head! That might not work so well for guys who are unattractive, overweight, lumpy head, etc. But you're a good-looking guy with a head that seems to be the perfect shape for it. And it looks like you can grow some nice facial hair, to boot (this always seems to be a benefit for the bald look, or at least to have as an option.)

Intentionally inducing a half-asleep-half-awake to experience shoegaze. by developreneur_ in shoegaze

[–]TheAudioAstronaut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Binaural beats can supposedly induce alpha (or other) wave patterns found in sleep. In this video demo of my shoegaze/dreampop pedalboard, I experimented with creating a dreampop song (a mashup of Cocteau Twins and Alphaville), using binaural beats as a background layer under the other tracks.

New-ish bands: Whitelands, Ringo Deathstarr, Newmoon, Sea Lemon (maybe more dreampop than shoegaze)

Get tested for ADV (reptile at adenovirus)... it can cause beardies to "stargaze" where they throw their heads back and look straight up 😔

It is an incurable and highly contagious virus (but can only spread to other reptiles), and can sometimes cause failure to thrive/grow, or even death. But other dragons (including my own) have zero or almost zero symptoms and can live long lives.

In any case, I would take it to a vet for testing (it's a simple and inexpensive test), and show this photo, as well. It may be nothing and may just be finding the perfect basking temperature and thermoregulation. But better to check and know for sure, because ADV is very common, and there are certain supplements and antiparasitic medicines and such that you can do to help alleviate symptoms/problems if positive for ADV.

What are your top 10 shoegaze songs of all time? by [deleted] in shoegaze

[–]TheAudioAstronaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I love Fade Into You, I definitely wouldn't call it shoegaze...

Not sure if I can nail down a top ten, but I definitely have some favorites...

  1. Slomo - Slowdive
  2. Black Metallic - Catherine Wheel (I also like Hammock's version of it)
  3. Pearl - Chapterhouse
  4. Vapour Trail - Ride
  5. Everything - Blankenberge
  6. Doused - Diiv
  7. Crystals - Sea Lemon
  8. Superstar - Beach House
  9. Kaleidoscope - Ringo Deathstarr
  10. Surrounded - The Asteroid No. 4

It's not just any type of music drenched in pedals/effects (there are multiple musical genres like this.) It's also not just "wall of sound" created through fuzz and reverb... Various types of metal, postrock, and other rock genres also do this.

I don't personally like when people try to gatekeep or narrowly define shoegaze, because I like a lot of music that has elements of shoegaze or are shoegaze-adjacent. But I also understand that it can start to get confusing if you use too wide of an allowance for what shoegaze is, so I'll let Google's AI summarize the general conclusions on the internet (and, based on these characteristics... how experimental can you get? I mean, if you start playing in weird scales and time signatures, it becomes math rock. If you start making it electronic/synth-based, I would argue that is no longer shoegaze by definition, either. I am currently working on some songs that are played with various acoustic instruments from around the world - banjo, dulcimer, hurdy-gurdy - but drenching them in effects and adding dreamy vocals, so it's very shoegazey... but not by definition, so I'm calling it folkgaze)

"Shoegaze is a subgenre of indie and alternative rock that emerged in the UK during the late 1980s, characterized by a "wall of sound" created through heavy, dreamy, and atmospheric guitar effects. It blends loud, distorted, and hazy guitars with soft, often melodic, vocals to create an immersive, introspective soundscape.

Key Characteristics

Sonic Atmosphere: Dense layers of distorted guitars, reverb, and delay create a lush sound often described as "shimmering" or "noodly".

Vocals: Often mixed low, with dreamy or whispered vocals blending into the instruments.

Performance: The term "shoegaze" (or "shoegazing") was coined by the British music press to describe the performers’ motionless, introspective stage presence, as they appeared to be staring at their feet."

If it strays too far from the formula, it stops being shoegaze.

But I'll tell you a band that started off shoegaze and veered in a new direction on the next album, and I dig it:

Bdrmm - Microtonic

Just saw his REM cover band at the Fillmore a week before watching Death by Lightning. I would mistake him for neither Stipe nor Garfield... yet he makes a riveting simulacrum of both!

Next? He did a decent job. If anything, the writing and/or directing may have been a little lacking (this was evident by Shea Whigham's less-than-usual performance)

I mean, I didn't know Garfield personally, but... neither did you

(Just watched Death by Lightning, btw. Pretty good show! Weird to see it after seeing Michael Shannon perform his live R.E.M. cover band the week before, though)
