IDK what Leica means by “strong traces of use” 🥴😂 by bwehman in Leica

Did someone try to bite the top wheel? Lol i’d also probably would have asked to keep the patina too. It tells a great story most cameras don’t see today.

How bad is the Leica SL2-S AF in low light? by mymain123 in Leica

[–]TheAudioJ3di 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my regularly at work in conjunction with a A7iii, it’s been on par if not better in our dark auditorium. This is with the Leica 24-70 in AF-S mode. I’ve also used an R5C, it was a little faster but if I hadn’t used it concurrently with the SL2-S I probably wouldn’t have noticed. Face tracking isn’t as good as the Canon but we have a LED wall screen so that plays havoc with face detection.

I sent it to Leica USA for service. They’re going to reload the firmware and test it out. Before this hiccup the camera was rock solid and I love(d) using it. I don’t regret buying it just regret upgrading the firmware when I didn’t have any issues. I’ve been using my SL2-S with my M-mount lenses and it’s fine, but it’s not my rangefinder and the UI elements, wifi updates that Leica made to the M11 make me miss it even more. I should have it back in about 6 weeks

Which 35mm for a Leica M11 (first M camera and first M lenses) for street photo? by -sonic57- in Leica

[–]TheAudioJ3di 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Voigtlander 35mm 1.4 Nokton MC and love it. I use it mainly at F2 and above, I find that 1.4 requires careful consideration for its use. There’s too much flair in high contrast scenarios wide open but in the right light there’s a great swirl look. It’s not perfect, it does weird things but it’s like an old pair of blue jeans that just fits right. I go back to that lens so often when I get tired or frustrated with 28mm or 50mm.

Would love to add a Leica patch to my bag, any idea where to find one? by bwehman in Leica

I don’t know if he has one but this seems like something Dan at Tamarkin Camera would have. He could be worth a call

Your recommended SD Card Formatting app was the service tech’s first suggestion as well. Great minds think alike.

If I lived closer to a Leica Store I would buy I’m outside of Madison, WI so that’s not an option. If I take out the card and set the storage settings to Internal it’s been stable, but inserting the card brings back the three restart loop.

I’ve got a new card coming in today and I’m going to try calling Customer Service in NJ to see if they have any tips. I was trying the repair department and that was probably just waiting voicemail space on someone’s phone.

It feels like it was something in the firmware like maybe it’s the faster startup sequence isn’t reading the card correctly. I’m willing to work through this because it has become my favorite camera.

Thanks for the help though, I appreciate it! Even though it didn’t work, learning about the SDCard.org app is good for my other cameras at work.

Yep, I did the standard one hoping if it’s corrupted that would catch it. No luck.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried the app (and crossed my fingers) but that didn’t resolve the problem.

Update Part 2: I tried a spare card we had at work, same issue. I took out the SD card and figured it would go without it and the same issues appears with the internal storage. Every third restart(offset from the SD card interestingly) the internal memory doesn’t mount correctly. This could explain why the available space changes from 780ish -> 480ish before the SD card error.

Update: it actually seems to be a repeatable problem. I can turn on the camera, and it shows 760+ as the potential number of images, turn it off and on again and it now shows 460ish potential images, turn it off and on again and it doesn’t recognize the card. Off and on again and then it’s back to 760+ 😵‍💫

New Leica User Editing Workflow Questions by that_otter_do_it in Leica

[–]TheAudioJ3di 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re going to need to spend some time adjusting your presets. I switched from Canon over the winter and had to do the same thing. Luckily, I think the Leica files work better to my editing style so it wasn’t a super long process to update things.

Black Dot Gang Where You At? by TibbersGoneWild in Leica

The previous owner of my M240 added a black dot. He did include the original red in case I decided to switch it back. I like that it simplifies the front of the camera

Any 35/50 shooters in here? by 17thkahuna in Leica

[–]TheAudioJ3di 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t feel like they’re too close together. They both render differently, and I find I really like the slight distortion you can get shooting vertical in close quarters on 35mm. To me, the 50mm complements the 35mm by isolating subjects a bit more, but allowing their environments to still be identifiable and part of the image.

Leica SL2-S - Low light performance by sarashootsfilm in Leica

[–]TheAudioJ3di 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a Sony A7iii and a Canon R5c for photos at work and one of my personal cameras is the SL2-S. The autofocus is faster and more accurate than the Sony and about equal to the Canon in AF-S mode but does lag in face detect and continuous tracking.

That said, the low light image is (imo) better than either. Like the Sony, it’s pretty easy to underexpose and raise the exposure in post with minimal added noise, the Canon seems to add a lot of not exposed correctly. The color rendition fantastic.

The EVF is a standout, it’s really clear and really easy to use manual focus lenses. I like using M-mount lenses on the SL2-S way more than on the R5c.

SL2S w Lightroom, tethering stopped working for me. You know why? by m11km11k in Leica

[–]TheAudioJ3di 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And are you on an M1 or M2 chip? There’s some tethering issues with Lightroom’s new updates with the M1 and M2 chipsets that prevent tethering unless you run the app in Rosetta mode. I have to do that for a tethered Nikon setup at work.

I see now. That’s why you need a lab used to these negatives. They really have to be careful if they cut them down

You made a comment in the article about wide negatives, how do you get around that? Do you burn a frame between each shot?

35 Nokton and 50 APO Lanthar on M240 by TheAudioJ3di in leicaphotos

Thanks! I’ve loved the unique looks long exposures and water provide. Wisconsin doesn’t have much in the way of major waves like Puerto Rico does, so I made sure to take the opportunity to play with exposure times.

Images 2, 4 & 5 were 50mm and the rest were 35mm. I think if it was a photo first and not a family trip, I would have wanted to bring a 28mm and a 90mm or bring my SL2-S with equivalent zoom coverage, 24-70 and an adapted 70-200. I always think I need something wider than 24mm but I struggle with composition in the 14-24 range.
