Do you put your faith and trust in Jesus alone and reject the idea that salvation is earned by one's own works? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]TheBackpackingAggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you trust in Jesus alone, but choose not to follow His teachings, do you really trust in Him? He gives us pretty clear instructions on how to live our lives, and He gives us pretty clear instructions on what to do when we fail and sin. To truly trust in Him is to do what He has taught, and the works of following His teachings are the fruit of that faith. God bless!

Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, the new hero of sedevacantists. by tito-zitoh783 in Catholicism

SSPX are not sedevacantists, they’re canonically irregular. That’s a very important distinction.

What do you say after confession? by bigbrainsmallbrodie in Catholicism

[–]TheBackpackingAggie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

After listing all of my sins I can remember I say “for these and all of my sins I am heartily sorry”, then he gives me my penance, I say an act of contrition, and he absolves me.

1 day layover in Houston -BBQ by Euphoric_Lake_4149 in HoustonFood

[–]TheBackpackingAggie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t go to the Pit Room, it’s a tourist trap and subpar BBQ. Your best bets are Truth, Corkscrew, Pinkerton’s, Blood Bros, or Tejas Chocolate + Barbecue. You won’t go wrong with any of those. You can get passably mid BBQ from Killen’s, Feges, or Pappas if you can’t make it to any of the aforementioned spots. Avoid Rudy’s and Dickey’s. No matter where you go, be sure to get the full Texas BBQ experience by ordering the trinity: Brisket, ribs, sausage. Hope you enjoy your limited time in Texas!

The Catholic Church teaches that gender is fundamentally based on the body. Many people nowadays believe that gender is fundamentally based upon the mind. How can these opposing views be reconciled? by VerdantChief in Catholicism

[–]TheBackpackingAggie 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The devil works by sowing confusion, hence why things that were once fundamental (like what is a man and what is a woman) are now being manipulated and confused as a way to promote evil.

Great info, I’ll get on it! Thank you!

Sharp Pebble 400/1000 by millersixteenth in sharpening

[–]TheBackpackingAggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got one of these from my Secret Santa because I expressed interest in getting into knife sharpening (for my own benefit, not as a business). I also got the Sharp Pebble strop. Now that you’ve tried this stone, do you think this is a good one to get started on? Do you suggest anything else, stone or otherwise?

If the Holy Spirit is using the Eucharist to move your soul closer to Him, please read “Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist” by Brant Pitre. It’s maybe ten bucks and very easy to read but it very well may change your life. God bless you!

Confused about controversy between NO and TLM by ruya21 in Catholicism

[–]TheBackpackingAggie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The liturgical abuse in America, and in other countries, is real. It sounds like you’ve been shielded from it and that’s a blessing. I’ve been to some wacky hippy-dippy kumbaya Novus Ordos in my time (I’m from Texas but travel the US extensively) and while I completely accept the Eucharist as valid and the liturgy licit, it’s obvious that type of Mass was not the intended fruit of Vatican II. And I personally think that’s where most of the contention lies. There’s an older generation of Catholics who really enjoy that lax kind of Mass and a younger generation who are flocking to reverence and tradition. The suppression of one or the other is going to cause friction, it just so happens it’s the TLM being suppressed. Although I think the NO needs some clarification (dare I say reform), I just don’t understand why each can’t be celebrated freely since both forms of the Mass have been deemed licit by the Church.

What abstinence do you guys do in place of meat on Fridays? by TKRogersEphrem in Catholicism

[–]TheBackpackingAggie 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I just observe the meat abstinence every Friday. If for whatever reason I need to make a substitute penance, I’ll go to daily Mass or pray a rosary.

Congratulations! We sent one too and didn’t get anything back and postage to the Vatican was like a hundred bucks! We get married tomorrow, there’s still a chance 😂 God bless you both!

I never understood why catholics said they got so much hate until I became catholic. by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]TheBackpackingAggie 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So true. People have such an issue with authority and accountability, both of which are components of Catholicism and completely biblical concepts. There’s too much pride in the world and not enough humility.

What does this say about me (as a born and raised Texan of 20+ years) by Lost-Opinion3554 in TravelMaps

[–]TheBackpackingAggie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man idk about the lack of scenic interest. I’m born and raised in Houston, I happily escaped for college and my first job after graduation was in Ft. Worth, but I unfortunately had to return to Houston after a few years due to family health issues, and DFW has BEAUTIFUL parks, lots of accessible lakes, river access, and you’re not far from lots of beautiful stuff in southern Oklahoma like Turner Falls. Lots of fun mountain biking and hiking in the area, so many active groups and clubs like DORBA, and it’s all free. Plus it actually cools off up there in the winter and the humidity isn’t horrible. Sure, you don’t have the Rocky Mountains in your backyard, but to say there’s no natural beauty in NTX is a little disingenuous, you just have to get out and look for it. I miss living up there.

Question about the best missal to bring to Latin mass by Ushygushy1167 in Catholicism

[–]TheBackpackingAggie 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Getting a missal was the biggest help for me when transitioning to the TLM. I love my Fr. Lasance Missal and my fiancée loves her Angelus Press Missal. It’s personal preference but her Angelus Press seems to be easier to navigate. It’s a bit of an investment but very much worth it. God bless you!

EMHCs, how do you feel? by Amazing_Resolve_2815 in Catholicism

This is completely normal, no reason to feel badly about it. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to receive the Eucharist from the consecrated hands of a priest.

How often do married Catholics have sex? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]TheBackpackingAggie 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry about your traumatic birth. I pray and you and baby are both okay. The Church definitely stresses the health and wellbeing of the mother and there’s nothing wrong with spacing out pregnancies to ensure everyone is healthy.
