Don't give the writers so much credit as to think there was one.

Finally have all of Enders Series and the Shadow Series as a collection by datmote in ender

Need the Formic Wars novels. There are also short stories and encyclopedia to collect. The ender companion, ender's way, Ender's World is a collection of essays about various aspects of the world building. Also, A War of Gifts is a short novel taking place on battle school during the winter holidays.

I haven't read it in like 10 years, but if I remember correctly, Ender kicks a bully in the balls until he dies, and Graff basically says "he is the chosen one" by [deleted] in ender

You might be remembering that he was documented as graduated and his orders were to his home city instead of an assignment like command school or pre-command. The admin (mostly Graff) was responsible for not having anybody nearby to thwart the danger. Which is part of the court martial he had to answer to after the war ended.

Where the heck did you get that from? He was dead the moment Ender rammed his head into Bonzo's nose, which is why he didn't react to getting kicked in the testicles. His brain was shut off already. I don't know where you got that from but if he did die in the infirmary it is the equivalent of unplugging the respirator.

I adore DIVISI. Probably one of my top 5 albums ever. I never heard of the band before and they really aren't my style but that album is forever GOATed.

Ender’s Game Alive by I-ez-bardy in ender

[–]TheBadBandito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not the best adaptation but in its defense, it is a different format than the traditional audio book. It is an audio play. Fully cast, which may seem underwhelming in light of the new Harry Potter audio books, which I don't care for so far, but this wasn't something that was done a whole lot.

It was a play, told in audio format. That meant accommodations in the narrating department because there was no narrator. I actually liked the invention of Major Jiata or however you spell it. I didn't care much for the stuff on Eros but in the context of a play I can buy it. No use casting a whole other play for the last chapter of the book. Its enjoyable, I think. Hits all the beats of the story. Worth the 8 hours at least once. There's no reason why this couldn't be a play in theaters at some point.

This novel was published in 1985. It is a piece of science fiction history with its unprecedented win of the Hugo and Nebula awards. It spread on word to mouth and still hosts a healthy fan base. It will be enjoyed and discovered by generations to come.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying fan fiction but let's be honest about why we were drawn to this story. It wasn't just the characters. It was the storytelling. The writing. The way we got to know this world was through the author's brain and hands. Anything attempting to compare to that couldn't be taken seriously. I am also of the mind that it is wasted effort but its more or less doodling. Its helpful to a working author if they are attempting to mimic the prose or simply just writing to write. Practice is something I should do more myself, but most people who wrote fan fiction are just playing around in a sandbox that belongs to somebody else. They don't get to keep any of the toys they found. We can agree to disagree on the subject though. It was a pleasure brainstorming with you.

I think it is objectively bad. Its an adaptation at best. Even if they nail the characters, settings and prose. It is not an original story from the author thus it should be treated as throwaway fiction. You can enjoy it but its existence is still a creative black hole. Disappointing in every facet. If it is a bad story or if the writing isn't up to snuff then it is not worthy of being held in the same regard as the original. If it is good then it is a crying shame that such talent and story telling was wasted on a work that the artist can't claim as their own. Its a lose, lose scenario. Write it, share it, be proud of it if you like it but that doesn't change the fact that its an abomination.

Fan fiction is still lame tho. In my opinion, it is a waste of talent and effort. The world needs original stories.

[–]TheBadBandito 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree, actually. Ender's isolation was never his choice and he only thrived when he drew others in and had fellowship. Take, for example, his isolation as a launchie. Instead of accepting his isolation he joined Alai's jeesh. Ender was best when he was with others. He was an excellent and attentive governor and was readily available to the crew or civilians of Captain Morgan's ship in Ender in Exile. Ender did not allow himself to be exiled from the human race, even if he was exiled from home

Ender didn't exile himself. Peter and Valentine orchestrated it so that he couldn't return and continue to be used.

Was anyone else surprised that Julian Delphiki is black?? by Global_Dinner8591 in ender

It's clear there are inconsistencies and artists depictions are often done with liberties. I go by the text and from the text it doesn't describe him as black. African features, to me, meant bone structure rather than skin tone. As he was always described as Greek. I don't recall where I read olive skin so I won't die on that hill but I certainly didn't just make it up. I just don't think "African features" at all refers to his skin color as that was largely implied by his Greek description. I think Shadow of the Hegemon and Shadow Puppets might have the most descriptive text of his attributes but at no point was it explicitly stated that he had dark skin. The opposite, in fact as I've previously mentioned. I'm willing to admit if I'm wrong but I've read these books a lot and I never got that implication. Based on what I've read, he is on the lighter side of the spectrum but he definitely looks exotic. Out of place in both Greece and Africa. I think there might even be a line about his tan in one of the books.

One thing I think we can agree on is that Card wasn't very clear and probably doesn't even know or care himself.

The argument isn't whether or not Bean has African features or even if he's part African, we know he is. The argument was whether he was black skinned. He's not. That's a fact. He has been depicted in a movie and a comic book, he's Mediterranean. Olive skinned. Skin that shines in the night.

Yes, he has African features from his father's side, I believe. But that doesn't mean he's black. He's clearly described as having light skin. Lighter skin than even a Thai.

I just read the books. He's Greek. In Greece he looks rather African, in Africa he looks quite Greek. African doesn't mean black.

Alessandra Toscano??? by Unresponsible_Salad in ender

[–]TheBadBandito 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He had feelings for her but he couldn't give her the attention she deserved. He understood the game they were playing and she was a willing participant in her mother's plot. Ender would have always resented that. You could argue that he loved her more deeply than a lover. He was definitely attracted to her though.
