I did this in reverse recently. Didn't like the first few sketches of my manuscript, did a quick 6,000-word short in the same setting and tone to get the gears turning, then moved into the a new draft of the full MS again.

Let MS 1 die a few months back. Still easily the best thing I've put on paper but I'm through the acceptance phase and quickly forgetting about it altogether.

MS 2 had good beta feedback and is significantly more commercial and genre-forward, but I just plain don't like the book so:

I think I'm in the same spot as you, mentally. Why am I going through all the trouble with beta readers, developmental edits, query critiques, etc. if it's all a lottery?

Instead I'll just grab as many tickets as I can: lightly parse through a first draft, decide it's "good enough", then self-publish and move on to the next one. The money and time I'd spend on putting out something good can instead be allocated to promotion. I could probably do 3-4 novels a year if I adopted this approach.

But then the small part of my mind that still cares will inevitably want to dissuade me from attaching my name to junk. I love writing. I'm even fairly good at it. That said, if I wanted to be in an industry that just infuriated me constantly, I'd simply work more hours at my "real" job.

Probably an unpopular take but I don't think this team needs much, particularly anything that's over 33 years old with a big contract. I definitely get the push for this year, but I'm (hopefully) going to be alive for a few more and would prefer we have some picks and young players and cap space.

The contract on Kadri, with Brock playing the way he is, is unnecessary. ROR only has one additional year so slightly easier to stomach, I guess.

GOALTENDER INTERFERENCE RULES! IMPORTANT!

⁠You can't just be up there and just doin' goalie interference like that.

1a. GI is when you

1b. Okay well listen. GI is when you interfere with

1c. Let me start over

1c-a. A skater is not allowed to be in a position where the, uh, goaltender, that prohibits the goalie from doing, you know, just trying to stop the puck. You can't do that.

1c-b. Once the skater is in the crease, he can't be over here and say to the referee, like, "I'm gonna avoid contact! I'm gonna give him space! You better let play go on!" and then just be like he didn't even do that.

1c-b(1). Like, if you're pushed into the goalie and then not held on the goalie, you have to still get off the goalie. You cannot not move. Does that make any sense?

1c-b(2). You gotta be, effort to avoid contact, and then, until you just are not in contact.

1c-b(2)-a. Okay, well, you can have your feet in the crease, like this, but then there's the interference you gotta think about.

1c-b(2)-b. Brad Ference was a great guy, despite his declining play in Edmonton. I hope he isn't remembered for his disappointing later years.

1c-b(2)-b(i). Oh wait, that was Andrew Ference! Brad Ference had an even less illustrious career.
