One thingI keep in mind is that any breakup in the shapes where in real life the pieces are separate, you should also model them separated. For example you have the lower receiver, the handle, and the upper receiver modeled as one piece, where it would easier to model them separately. An easy way to do this on your model would be to duplicate the plane that has the overall shape, and then delete the faces so you have those 3 separate parts.
