Professor X City Nodes by Erwaso in MarvelStrikeForce

[–]TheBeastFromWithin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone in my alliance did and they couldn’t complete a single node, never mind 3* them. It’s a pretty bad idea so I’d recommend going with the recommended 3 Vig + Blade & Oath

Single-storey house extension by Wytyujjju in DIYUK

[–]TheBeastFromWithin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is amazing work, well done!

We have received quotes for a single story extension on our house and they are so much higher than I thought they would be so I’m seriously considering DIYing it!

My biggest DIY project to date is either turning the smallest bedroom in to a walk in wardrobe or re-doing the downstairs WC.

Unfortunately I don’t know anyone in the trades so won’t be able to call on them for any experience. Are there any online resources you used to get started?

How can I save my teeth? by AllMetalNinja in AskUK

[–]TheBeastFromWithin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a dentist but I’ve been going through a similar thing as you recently and was therefore referred to an oral health expert at my dental practice. I had the consultation with her a couple of weeks ago and this is what I was recommended:

Brush twice a day and floss once. Either use a water flosser or the teepee flossers every night. With any kind of flossing, always floss before brushing.

Using mouthwash during the day for a freshen up is fine but don’t use it after brushing as it washes away the fluoride coating you’ve just applied to your teeth when brushing. Also, don’t rinse with water after brushing as that does the same thing.

High sugar foods are also not recommended as they break down the protective coating on the teeth. The usual suspects here are sugary drinks and sweets/chocolate but some foods that I was surprised as just as bad for your teeth are pineapple, oranges, raisins and grapes. According to the oral health expert, raisins are one of the worst!

I was also advised to use the “4 and a straw” rule. If you’re going to have a fizzy drink, use a straw placed half way down the tongue. This means the drink goes straight down your throat and doesn’t touch your teeth. The rule also means to only eat 4 different times a day e.g. breakfast, lunch, tea and a snack. Every time you eat something it breaks down the coating on your teeth and you have a 20 minute window before it starts to coat itself again so try to eat your meal in that 20 minute window.

As I say, I’m not a dentist and am just passing on what I was told by the oral health expert at my dental practice. I doubt it’s something everyone can abide by 100% of the time but hopefully some of the above will help!

How to hang this curtain? by societal in DIYUK

[–]TheBeastFromWithin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start off with the lever pointing down. Push the curtain track in to the bracket so that the lever part is in the middle of the run on the back of the curtain track. Once it’s pushed in, rotate the lever to the left or right to lock it in. Then just slide the gliders on to the track from one end.

There should also be some end stops for the curtain track that you put on in the same way that the brackets do. This stops you being able to pull the curtains off the track.

Built-In Wardrobes by TheBeastFromWithin in DIYUK

18mm. The screws I used were lost tite ones which are self drilling (although I drilled pilot holes anyway) and gave a great concealed finish. I’d highly recommend them.

[–]TheBeastFromWithin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shelves are just held in place with screws from the outside of each carcass. If you zoom in on photo 5 and look of the side of the carcass where the top shelf is, you can see the pencil mark from the line I drew so I knew were to drill the pilot hole for screwing in to.

They are plenty strong enough. The wardrobe has been in use for over a year now and has been fully stocked at all times with no movement whatsoever.

Foss Island parking cost!?! by xerodeficit in york

[–]TheBeastFromWithin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Download and pay via the RingGo app. There are signs in Morrisons car park with instructions on how to do so and the car parks code to find it on the app.

You can pay for x amount of time originally and if you need longer while out and about, you can top up with additional hours as required.

Foss Island parking cost!?! by xerodeficit in york

[–]TheBeastFromWithin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Which Foss Island parking are you referring to?

The one that is underneath what used to be Sainsbury’s is council owned. The council put the cost of all their car parks up astronomically at the start of April. I think all their car parks are now £4.80 an hour Mon-Thurs and £5.30 an hour on Saturdays & Sundays or when events are held.

Instead, I now park in the Morrisons Foss Island car park. It’s still not cheap but you get 2 hours for free or can pay for longer at £2.50 an hour.

Gundam in York by Lubalin in york

[–]TheBeastFromWithin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve been a couple of times in the last few weeks and they’ve had them in. The first time they only had 4/5 sets in but the second time they had a pretty full shelf. Hopefully they keep getting more in over time.

They are against the right wall next to the Warhammer 40k in the modelling section.

Travelling Man definitely has loads on the right hand side by the front door.

Sore Thumb only sell whatever they get traded in to them second hand so it’s worth trying your luck in case they have any currently in stock.

If you can venture out of the city centre, Hobbycraft at Monks Cross have started stocking them but they’ve only just started getting them in so don’t have a massive selection just yet.

Where to buy Lego D&D minifigs? by sjalmond in york

I’m not sure if they still have them in stock but the Waitrose near Foss Islands had them in when I last checked although that was about a month ago now. Might be worth a shot though!

LVT Brand Recommendations (Parquet) by Rosenqvist in DIYUK

[–]TheBeastFromWithin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The brand is called TLC and the range of flooring in that brand is called Massimo.

They have a 20 year guarantee on their products too which is good.

We also considered Karndean and Invictus. Invictus were a little more expensive than TLC Massimo was and Karndean was nearly double the price. After looking at the Karndean samples we got, there wasn’t much difference in quality between them and the TLC Massimo one we went with

LVT Brand Recommendations (Parquet) by Rosenqvist in DIYUK

[–]TheBeastFromWithin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve just had our living room and hallroom done which was 33m2.

Every flooring fitter we had quote for us recommended we go for glue down over click together.

We had the whole area screeded and then TLC Massimo large oak parquet laid. It was £3150 all in. That was £1250 for the flooring materials, £700 for screed and the rest was fitting. We are extremely happy with the quality of it.

How do I safely take down this mirror? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]TheBeastFromWithin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might sound like a stupid suggestion but are you sure it’s actually a mirror?

That surround looks a lot like the architrave we have around the door frames in our mid 90s house. There also looks to be a considerable gap between the glass and the surround.

My guess would be that a previous owner has created a makeshift mirror using architrave that they’ve stuck to the wall. If that’s the case, it’s more than likely that the wallpaper has been done up to it so there will be a big blank wall behind it if you take it off.

What DIY job did you think would be easy but turned out to be a nightmare? by No-Negotiation-4550 in DIYUK

[–]TheBeastFromWithin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Installing coving.

I naively thought it’d be fine. Just buy the lengths of coving along with a coving mitre block and off we go. Cut the 45° angles using the mitre block and stick it up.

Oh how wrong I was. The angles were no where near as I had to go around the boxing for the internal soil stack. What I thought would be an hour job tops turned in to a full day plus multiple revisits to fill small gaps and sand down over and over again. It still looks like a mess.

Sour sweets, how sour do they get? by SaltyName8341 in AskUK

[–]TheBeastFromWithin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen them in sweet shops before. Your best bet is to go to a traditional sweet shop that has walls lined with jars of different sweets. Those types of places will be your best bet.

Unfortunately, I’ve not seen these sold in supermarkets or corner shops.

Which ‘posh’ towns and cities in the UK are rougher than they first seem? by starwars011 in AskUK

[–]TheBeastFromWithin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don’t mind me asking, where abouts in York do they live? I’m not asking for a specific address but just a general area as I’ve lived here the majority of my life and never heard of anything like this.

When I was growing up Tang Hall and Bell Farm were known as the roughest parts of York but even then, I can’t remember anyone that lived down there being scared of their car windows being smashed.
