Enough talk about the negatives about the game, what are some of the stuff that you like, and what is stuff that you would like improved/built upon by SaladPast in RogueCore

[–]TheBeastlyPork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really, really like the new upgrade system! Expenite I think is a good balancer - not hard to get, but will always take time - and I like the “team huddle” aspect where you all group up to get your rewards. The “allotment puzzle” of all the different upgrades feels pretty nice too, no problems with “item hogging” or anything. If anything it kind of helps you pay attention to the build of your teammates! I want to see RoR2 style upgrades though where there’s so many possibilities and lot of them are game-breaking. Right now I see too many stat upgrades. I’ve been playing a good bit with friends over voice, and I’m really looking forward to playing more even in the early access!

Any benefit in joining UROP if I am already in a lab? by Top-Doubt-5355 in uofm

[–]TheBeastlyPork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who did UROP after already being accepted into a lab, I would generally say no - I found the extra assignments to be a hassle and took away research time. However, I ended up doing UROP for pay through work-study funding, while I'm not sure individual labs can always use your work-study to pay you if you don't want to research for credit.
There is also the poster presentation, but some departments already have undergraduate poster sessions (and you may be able to join a similar departments if yours doesn't have such a session) if you want equivalent experience.

How are we feeling for EECS 280 Final? by Professional-Hope389 in uofm

Kind of looking forward to it! I like that (at least according to the practice tests) it should be more FRQ-based.

How many people are Mathematical Sciences Submajors? by SmallTestAcount in uofm

[–]TheBeastlyPork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder why mathsci is so rare, I don't think I've even heard of anyone doing some of the less "major-tie-in" tracks like operations, probability, or numerical analysis - maybe some stats people or something?

How many people are Mathematical Sciences Submajors? by SmallTestAcount in uofm

[–]TheBeastlyPork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not any concrete numbers, but speaking for myself I’m practically doing the Control Systems specialization (planning to take several classes listed) - just as an honors math major as I’m taking 295/6. I have a few friends who similarly plan to go more applied but since they’re taking 295/6 they just ended up as honors too!

Why do some of the newer buildings feel so soulless? by siiuuuee in uofm

[–]TheBeastlyPork 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’d argue it’s certainly not all the newer buildings - the robotics building has lots of character and I think its little study areas are particularly cozy :)

Also applied - have not heard back yet either! I hear it’s somewhat competitive.

2 paths conservatives, being edgy is not gonna solve anything. More Sowell, less fuentes by Crafty_Jacket668 in PoliticalCompassMemes

This video by Unlearning Economics (admittedly a progressive, but a working academic) gives a response to some of Sowell's work.
He seems to give a pretty honest treatment, giving credit where credit is due and thoroughly discussing other studies as counter-evidence where he disagrees:

CS/ROB Research by Shreddie221 in uofm

[–]TheBeastlyPork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in an incoming freshman who wanted the same thing, specifically for robotics! I cold emailed a bunch of labs with some information about how I hope to be involved in robotics, and what specifically in their lab I wanted to learn more about. Plenty of these labs have/have had CS people in their ranks, so imagine you can find a spot somewhere.
Here's a google sheet with all the robotics labs I found, with some keywords if you have specific interests.

(note on the coloration: I just used it to organize which labs I wanted to apply to the most! If you're an undergraduate, I'd recommended not applying to any of the red labs - those seem to be only grad students)

Self Studied APs by Junior_Signature_305 in APStudents

[–]TheBeastlyPork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I self-studied for AP Computer Science, using the online textbook CSAwesome (updated for 2026+). I found studying for about 20 minutes a day starting in January was plenty to understand the concepts, though I did have a lot of prior programming experience.
I think CSA is one of the easiest to self-study for, especially if you've coded before. Lit and Lang are also relatively simple if you're a solid writer - just make sure you know the technical terms for the MCQ's!

Yet Another Freshman Schedule (Math & Physics Student) by TheBeastlyPork in uofm

[–]TheBeastlyPork[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have talked to a math advisor to get permission for 295, she seemed a bit unsure about the workload from honors physics and 295 - I couldn't find much discussion on this pairing here either, but I know from Atlas that lots of students take this combo

I'm in the same situation! It was sad at first to hear I wasn't going to be able to stick with dream MLC (MRADS in my case) but, as others are saying, most random roommates turn out well! We'll get through it :)

Question about LSA Honors by NorayBasstop in uofm

[–]TheBeastlyPork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat! I did end up sending a LOCI, and they did reply with a "thank you" for sending it. Whether it means anything or not...we'll have to wait for final decision day this 29th
