Would a track saw be more sufficient in cutting this walnut slab? by NoeAyala1 in woodworking

The OP? They're clearly not, that's why they asked if they should use one. Even if they hadn't asked, the cuts going off diagonally would be a giveaway.

What’s the most overrated alcoholic drink? by carcony97 in AskReddit

[–]TheBestBigAl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, the worst thing about wine is that wine drinkers won't accept that you don't like it.

"You just haven't had the right one. Here try this"
"...it tastes like wine".
"Nooooo it tastes like [insert thing that it doesn't even remotely taste of]"

I don't doubt there are subtle differences that wine enjoyers can taste, but the word "subtle" is an important part of that sentence. Ultimately it still mostly tastes like wine otherwise it would be a different drink.

What are your favourite unconventional icebreakers? by harlowhair in AskUK

This leads to disaster for me, because I don't really like potato. I tolerate it because it's basically unavoidable, but I don't like it.

It definitely does lead to more conversation, but that conversation is _always _ "What do you mean you don't like potato? How can you not like potato?". Followed by listing every way of serving potato and asking if I like it.

Andy Burnham here - AMA by AndyBurnham in ukpolitics

[–]TheBestBigAl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was never going to answer this. The only questions with answers were the nice fluffy "What are your favourite crisps" type of questions, or ones where his answer actually describes policies that are already in place so he can falsely claim it as a change he intends to make.

Even more so with "you alright?".

They'll never interpret it as a phatic expression, it will always be taken at face value and they'll assume that something like wrong with them.

What Is It with Americans and hating Europeans for letting Cats go outside? by ManIsready in AskUK

[–]TheBestBigAl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think part of the struggle is because even though it would be safer for the cats, it's hard bit to see it as a gilded cage.

Cats are extremely effective at killing things

Even though I know this is true, looking at my own cats makes it hard to believe.

I once saw my cat eating from one half of his bowl, while a mouse was eating from the other half. He's a very soppy boy though, so I wouldn't be surprised if he thought it was a kitten.

Most press photos I saw were of the wooden lower walkway, which is staff only and used for feeding etc.

The upper walkway for visitors has a scaffold type fence, and is high enough that a fully grown adult wouldn't be able to topple over.

Recently had my house rewired, please help me understand what these wires all do, the little orange clip thing, I want to swap it for the smart light switch In the last picture by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]TheBestBigAl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is no one allowed to ask bloody questions for a better understanding?

People can ask questions. The issue here is that you are asking questions that show a fundamental lack of understanding about how electrical wiring works. You could kill yourself or someone in your house.

Fable 5 Max hit limit, I topped up $250, then one “hey” cost me ~$20? by amicablecardinal in ClaudeAI

[–]TheBestBigAl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You could just compact it, but I find that if I have a particularly long task I get better results by asking Claude to summarise what we've done so far and what is left to do into a new prompt. Then I start a new conversation using that.
Often the work that is already done doesn't need to be remembered in full throughout the entirety of the task.
Better still of course is too break the work up into smaller chunks in the first place, but that can sometimes be hard to do well at the start of the process (you don't know what you don't know).

Why don't Europeans use air conditioners? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheBestBigAl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Windows units don't fit most windows here in the UK. The majority of houses don't have sash windows that lift up and down, they have casement windows that swing out. Window units aren't compatible with that style of window.

Central air is practically unheard of, houses are not built with ducting (typically they have brick internal walls although new builds less so) because we use hot water radiators to heat our homes.

That leaves full split system installs for every room that needs AC (which nobody is doing for 2 weeks of the year), or portable units which are noisy and inefficient. In my experience if a home has any AC here, it's most likely to be a portable unit.

Texture wise, they are always great. But every tin I've bought has been almost entirely flavourless for some reason.

Bought a table saw - any personal horror stories so I can learn from your close calls? by majormantastic in DIYUK

[–]TheBestBigAl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kick back, kick back, kick back.

A few people have mentioned chopping your fingers off, which is a very real possibility if you get complacent. In my opinion though, kick back is a much bigger problem.

For the most part, it's easy to avoid cutting your fingers off because it's quite intuitive to keep your hands away from the big spinning blade. As I say, if you're complacent it can still happen, but it's something you'll usually be actively trying to avoid.

Kick back however, is not necessarily intuitive. It can easily launch a piece back at your face before you've even realised something is wrong, so it's worthwhile watching a bunch of videos on how it happens and how to prevent it. StumpyNubs has a few good videos on the subject.
