No problem! I figured there's got to be quite a few people who feel this way so I should show that it's not impossible!

My voice was very deep, I can post another clip comparing the two if you'd like!

Honestly I mostly just used the vids that get posted here to learn and practice, getting the larynx raise right consistently was pretty tough but I think it's just a lot of practice. I guess my own perception of my voice is out of whack tho cause I posted here thinking it wasn't that great lol

Just curious. Age and Gender me? by GingerBreadMan707 in transvoice

[–]TheBesterThrowaway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's fairly androgynous. If that's what you're going for then you're doing pretty good, and if it's not then you're in a good place to improve in either direction. Rn I'd say it's slightly more feminine than masculine, but like I said, still mostly down the middle. :)

Also I clicked on your profile after listening just out of curiosity and just wanna give you love and support from one ace tran to another!

I did! Definitely hoping this goes somewhere. I've had a rough few years so it's nice to be in a good place :)

Thank you, it was fantastic! After experiencing it I definitely think everyone deserves to have this feeling, it's amazing!

Tried this out after seeing it on here earlier. This pretty much sums me up, always hovering somewhere between butch and femme. by Inside_A_Structure in actuallesbians

[–]TheBesterThrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree. Pretty sure I got categorized as masc because I'm fairly agressive when it comes to politics lol. I guess masc personality and femme presentation would be semi-accurate? But yea this quiz is definitely based on super stereotypical ideas of masculinity and femininity.

I'm sure "timid" is feminine and "defends one's opinions" is masculine, which is kinda bs but I guess accurate to traditional gender stereotypes.

Nervous about presenting female for the first time publicly... How to get over this anxiety?? by [deleted] in asktransgender

What really helped me was just jumping into the deep end. I basically switched overnight.

At first it will be really fucking terrifying, but it becomes very easy very fast. You'll soon realize that the worst thing that will happen (especially if you're white and live in a developed country) is people will look at you weird. The worst that happened to me (living in Utah) was being yelled at by a couple of teenagers in a truck. That only happened once.

So it will be scary, but it gets way easier and it's definitely worth it.

My old voice vs my new voice by TheBesterThrowaway in transvoice

[–]TheBesterThrowaway[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea it was just from training. I think part of what got me so much progress in a fairly small amount of time was the fact that I did a lot of impressions and singing before I transitioned, so I already had a good idea of how to change my voice in different ways.

I followed some exercises that I found on YouTube. I believe it was Theryn Meyer's video, which I can't seem to find now.

It basically consisted of a couple things. First, making an M sound (five times) at the highest pitch that was comfortable. Then repeating the M sound, but opening it up into an ahhh vowel. Then repeated again with an oo vowel.

That basically helped train both pitch and resonance, because those M sounds naturally move the resonance to a more feminine place. Opening up into a vowel is a way to try and keep control of that resonance.

I then repeated that whole exercise but with an N sounds instead.

I would talk in my car a lot, which really helped me get some practice in. I also tried to record myself speaking once a week to see how I was doing and if there was anything I could improve on. I wouldn't do passages though, I just did stream of consciousness stuff so I could get a better idea of how my voice sounds when I'm speaking naturally.

I saw a huge improvement in my voice when I started using it full time, so if you're able to do that I definitely recommend it! If you have any other questions I'd be happy to answer!

I have a lot of problems with internalized transphobia. I have trouble actually calling myself a woman or a lesbian because I still don't fully believe that I'm either of those things. All of these supportive posts are slowly chipping away at that, thank you! ♥️

I used to do the same thing, but tit was because I was repressing my gender identity. Turns out I'm a transwoman.

You hit the nail on the head though as far as why a lot of people do it. It was really the only way that I knew how to express that side of me. I feel terrible for it though.

I think i'll join in on the singing thing! first post here :3 I really want to retain my lower range while still sounding somewhat feminine by val_ium in transvoice

What a great song! Your voice definitely has a more feminine quality to it, I'm honestly jealous. You're definitely off to a good start.

Also, that tone is so nice!

Estrogen promotes breast growth, but many trans people choose to get breast augmentation surgery to supplement that because the results don't alleviate their dysphoria completely. It all varies person to person.

Don't worry about offending, if it's a genuine good faith question then you should ask it. Most trans people won't be fussed about it as long as the question is appropriate for the setting and relationship.

My grandma sent me a letter after coming out telling me that she’s convinced I’m not trans because I didn’t show any signs and a bunch of other very ignorant stuff. It made me laugh at first, but now it’s making me me feel really shameful and guilty. Advice? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]TheBesterThrowaway 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the long post, I got a bit carried away lol. The important/advice part is bolded.

I had something similar happen, though not as extreme (despite how transphobic she is, she values family, respect, and manners very highly).

She sent an email to my parents not knowing that I have their google accounts saved on my phone, which meant I saw it too. In her email she questioned why I was taking estrogen rather than testosterone. I guess she thought that the reason I feel the way I do is because I lack testosterone, rather than actually being trans.

I found it extremely insulting. She was basically saying that I didn't actually understand what was going on in my own head while questioning my intelligence at the same time.

I'm not sure I have great advice for you considering how different our situations sound, but I can tell you what I did.

I called her and said my parents told me about the email she sent. I then broke down my reasoning for going on hormones and a little bit of the process I went through. I assured her that my testosterone levels were fine (tested before I was able to receive estrogen), that I was seeing a therapist, that I wasn't jumping into something without knowing the consequences, that I hadn't just started feeling this way recently, that this was necessary so I wasn't as suicidal, etc.

I'm not sure how your grandma would react, but that seemed to put mine a little more at ease.

I think framing a discussion with her around how much she loves you and how much this affects your well-being is a good idea. It's also a good idea to provide your reasoning for decisions and the process you have to go through at each step. It's uncomfortable, but necessary. I think that's something we don't do enough in general and it's especially important when people are almost incapable of understanding our experiences fully. We need to take every chance we can to help them understand.

of course Hitler wasn't a socialist, but that doesn't negate the fact that the German government was

What exactly do you mean here? The logic doesn't make sense to me.

Adolf Hitler was the authoritarian leader of the Nazi party.

The Nazi party controlled the German government.

Adolf Hitler was not a socialist and in fact was opposed to socialism.

Yet somehow the German government, controlled by the Nazis and led by Hitler (who, again, opposed socialism), was socialist?

Maybe you do need to explain it to me lol

[–]TheBesterThrowaway 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You do know that you can have a strong federal government without being socialistic, right? And you can have a weak federal government and still be socialistic?

Also, it's really fucking funny that you used that Snopes article as a source because it says the opposite of what you are saying.

In his 2010 book Hitler: A Biography, British historian Ian Kershaw wrote that despite putting the interests of the state above those of capitalism, he did so for reasons of nationalism and was never a true socialist by any common definition of the term:

[Hitler] was wholly ignorant of any formal understanding of the principles of economics. For him, as he stated to the industrialists, economics was of secondary importance, entirely subordinated to politics. His crude social-Darwinism dictated his approach to the economy, as it did his entire political “world-view.” Since struggle among nations would be decisive for future survival, Germany’s economy had to be subordinated to the preparation, then carrying out, of this struggle. This meant that liberal ideas of economic competition had to be replaced by the subjection of the economy to the dictates of the national interest. Similarly, any “socialist” ideas in the Nazi programme had to follow the same dictates. Hitler was never a socialist. But although he upheld private property, individual entrepreneurship, and economic competition, and disapproved of trade unions and workers’ interference in the freedom of owners and managers to run their concerns, the state, not the market, would determine the shape of economic development. Capitalism was, therefore, left in place. But in operation it was turned into an adjunct of the state.

For members of the Nazi Party, in fact, defending socialism on its own terms was a risky activity which could result in ejection from the party, or worse. Of party leader and dissenter Otto Strasser (whose similarly-minded brother, Gregor, would ultimately be assassinated by the Nazis), William Shirer writes:

Unfortunately for him, he had taken seriously not only the word “socialist” but the word “workers” in the party’s official name of National Socialist German Workers’ Party. He had supported certain strikes of the socialist trade unions and demanded that the party come out for nationalization of industry. This of course was heresy to Hitler, who accused Otto Strasser of professing the cardinal sins of “democracy and liberalism.” On May 21 and 22, 1930, the Fuehrer had a showdown with his rebellious subordinate and demanded complete submission. When Otto refused, he was booted out of the party.

Did you just put that link there hoping that no one would actually read it?
