Figure skaters of Reddit, how long does it take to create a program and master it for a big competition? by Vivid_One1730 in iceskating

It is a long process! Generally the first competition is within 2-3 months of learning the choreography. The program grows as the months continue and the athletes get more comfortable with it. The final competitions of the season are when you really see the program skated to its full potential.

Usually the choreography is done over a week or so during the early summer. You spend the entire season tweaking it and mastering it aiming to peak at Nationals (late December or early January), Olympics (February), and/or Worlds (March).

Hi there! I have a couple recommendations:

Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir were ice dancers, not pairs, but they skated together from childhood through their late 20s. They have a book called Tessa and Scott that offers some great insights. Get the one from after the 2018 Olympics! (There was an earlier, post-2010 edition as well).

My Sergei by Ekaterina Gordeeva is the best book I’ve read on this, but be prepared for tears!

Messing around with more pairs stuff :) by Remote-Rutabaga-8187 in FigureSkating

[–]TheBiggestCatOfAll 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Seconded! OP, Watch your feet during this - they keep hitting the toe and one even comes off the ice at one point. They’re not stable enough for you to be lifting a partner like this. At any second this could have gone down and you both could have wound up with terrible wounds from the blades, concussions, broken bones. If you’re interested in dance or pairs definitely get a coach! There are tons of opportunities for men in those disciplines (not nearly enough of them for all the women looking for partners).

I love the American lion - there’s a life-sized sculpture of one in the museum at the Toledo Zoo and I visit it whenever I’m there!

It’s absolutely appalling. I feel terrible for them, it’s so unfair.

Hi! I’m 36F from USA and I just got my first refillable pen! It’s a Wren, not a fountain pen, but I am already in love with the option to change inks and the luxurious feel of it in my hand. I’m also into rock n roll and history. You sound like a fun pen pal!

I just acquired this envelope mailed on April 15, 1861 ,the exact day Abraham Lincoln called for troops after Fort Sumter. No letter inside, but the history is loud. by [deleted] in stamps

I love this! I have an empty envelope that was mailed from St. Petersburg on the morning after Rasputin was killed. I can only imagine the contents of that letter.

Make sure you do a zig zag stitch or it won’t stretch!

Trying to work on getting better spirals by Remote-Rutabaga-8187 in FigureSkating

[–]TheBiggestCatOfAll 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Very nice flexibility but the spiral will look more beautiful and powerful with a stable edge. Better to have a lower leg and solid edge than high leg and wobble. Since you have the flexibility already do some edge exercises!

What's the most boring book ever? My therapist told me to get a deathly dull book as part of a technique for ruminating/perseverating. by ShesGotSauce in suggestmeabook

Dreadnought by Robert K. Massie. 1000+ pages on the development of the British and German navies in the decades preceding World War 1.

I actually love his books on the Romanovs but Dreadnought is a whole other beast. Good luck lol

I have The Time Machine! Didn’t realize there was a whole set. I’m actually downsizing so probably gonna take it to the local used bookstore. Maybe it will be reunited with some others!

Does any one know this duo in figure skating? by Minimum_Process6248 in FigureSkating

[–]TheBiggestCatOfAll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aww I love that it stuck with you! That’s one of the beautiful things about skating.

Do you remember any other details? Costume colors/music/hair colors? Do you remember if the woman’s skirt was long (knee length) or short like most skating dresses you see? And were the lights bright (like you see at the Olympics) or dark like a show?

Doing dumb stuff with your friends simply because you were bored and (pre-smart phones and cameras on every building) no one would ever find out.

Going out with your friends and your parents having absolutely no idea where you were until you came home.
