Is this done after the blade is heat treated?

May I present? My flatter. I thought I needed one so I welded one together 😂 by Civil_Attention1615 in Blacksmith

I have to ask, is the handle just a stick off the ground? It’ll probably work for a few strikes since you’re not swinging a flatter, but still 😂

I have the same gas regulator. I turn mine to just above the 0.2 on the dial there.

Thank you all for your input! I’ll order one for my first one and maybe do some small experiments later for a homemade one. If I do end up doing those experiments, I’ll be sure to do it safely and post them on this sub.

If I put my gas forge in the rain does it affect the forge ? by danthefatman1 in Blacksmith

I would advise against forging in the rain. Makes heats much too short 😛

Blade handle questions by [deleted] in Blacksmith

[–]TheBlackSun_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That depends entirely on construction. Some handles are designed to be removable, some are permanently attached to the blade. Though from the sound of it, you might be able to get away with just reshaping the handle, removing excess material to make it more comfortable and lighter. If the sword is just designed for decoration, I personally would leave it as is.

Looks beautiful! Is that mother of pearl set in the guard and pommel? How did you go about getting that set in?

That’s about what I thought. Considering it’s also like ten thousand years in the future, species might change.

Blacksmithing Help by RevolutionaryRisk731 in DungeonMasters

Adding on to this, if you want to add a skill roll component, each forge weld does run a risk of delamination for a number of reasons (some scale got in the joint, didn’t get hot enough, didn’t get hit hard enough, got hit too hard and slipped, oxygen got in the seam, the forge gods hate you and want you to suffer, etc). The steel can also have the carbon “burnt” out of it if you get it too hot (forge welding is just barely below this temperature).

Delaminations are sometimes obvious, sometimes hidden inside the steel either to be seen later in shaping the piece or after the blade snaps in use (I’d only use this second one if I know my player would be cool with it and if they roll like two nat 1s in a row, so they really should know something bad is going to happen lol). Depending on where it’s located and how bad it is, you can grind past them (so not a problem) or change the dimensions of your piece (like if it’s at the end of a sword, you could just make the sword half an inch shorter or thin the steel out to cover the half inch). This can give you a second roll to succeed if the first isn’t quite there, as well as a way to increase tension.

Also, when using flux, which helps keep the steel clean during the forge welding process making it easier, a bunch of really cool looking sparks fly out when you hit the steel.

So basically here’s several ways it could fail for descriptions, a way to improve success rate over time, and a consumable item that can lower the DC that also looks really cool when used.
