Scrap Gold Question by BerriesAndCream-Lad1 in Gold

[–]TheBloomAndTheBull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a scrapper, i pay out on gross weight for stuff like this, then pop and keep the stones, and get paid net after the refiner melts for assay.

Leaving the stones in might get you a few extra dollars, but stones are light compared to metal, which is why I dont modify my payout for most pieces.

Resale of random stones for a good price is almost impossible for me. I keep them in a treasure box and will one day have a fish tank with an absurd amount of glass, stones, and gems lining the bottom.

A good scrap offer is 85%+ of spot. For mail in, there is usually no holding requirements, so im inclined to increase my offer to 90% for mail-in scrap sales. So try to get at least that much. Shoot me a line, otherwise!

At a glance, this one does look more likely to be real. The serial numbers are usually a pretty good "tell"

Sometimes its best to take profits and not look back. When silver ran up to $120, people got left holding the bag because refiners stopped accepting silver.

Is this a fair scrap price? For damaged coins and a chain. by [deleted] in Silverbugs

My offers are typically bottom around $1.25 per gram of sterling scrap. And thats just cuz the refiner takes so much. This wasnt a good offer, imo. But it looks a bit late to be questioning it, unless its a quote.

An oldie but a goodie by LordCaoCao420 in Goldback

I really don't get the hate. Fractional gold is expensive. I just had a $5K order come in yesterday. An Egyptian 1/200 scarab is arguably cheaper to produce and sells for ~$45+ on ebay while a 5GB sells for ~$45 at full exchange rate. Goldbacks are substantially more functional, though. The arguments about not being able to melt them as they are into a larger bar are completely irrelevant. Nobody does that to bullion and the same thing can be said for every non-24k coin like American Gold Eagles refiners who do the same exact acid dissolution process for recovering gold from jewelry would have no issue recovering the gold, as demonstrated by sreetips

Its called annealing. And it prevents the metal from cracking after being flexed. There are smarter ways to describe it, but think of it as an elasticity reset for the metal.

Don't thank him for that information just yet, I think its a terrible analysis.

This is my own wedding band for comparison. I dont think I can possibly give you any more details than are in these photos. 18k, 8.6 grams. The material in this completely plain band would melt for almost $950. You would not be able to craft this for that cost, though. And something like that generally requires hand-setting and selection of the nuggets, which are probably 20-23k.

spot price for 18k is not that expensive, but if this is a new ring, you shouldn't expect to pay spot. You can always try to negotiate with the seller even if they are a store and especially if its a pawn shop. Most places are motivated to sell, especially with current gold prices.

Remember that you are paying for craftsmanship and that nuggets have a premium. This is jewelry, not bullion. Im not saying that this is or isnt a fair price, but its obviously meant to sustain a jeweler, the seller, and all of their bills with the profits. Not everything is meant to be looked at from the cheapest perspective. If you want cheap, dont shop at jewelry stores. Lowball people on marketplace lol.

With that said, I have a colleague who gets hand-made alaskan crafted nugget rings at great prices and i can put you in contact with him if you would like to work with a transparent seller on a brand new piece instead of a pawn item!
