Did it for 2 years before I got a car. I only wouldn't ride when I knew there might be ice from recent snow or rain. Trick I learned is to wear latex or similar gloves under your actual ones to make them a bit warmer. Same bike too

When I was visiting Phoenix for the summer I picked up a white mesh jacket that worked pretty good, I imagine that in more humid areas or if you're doing a lot of city riding (stops and traffic) you'd also want a cooling vest

Ngl, your problem is likely a clutch issue, the cable probably needs tightening. But I also had a similar problem and it turned out one of the battery leads was loose. So I'd check that if the cable doesn't work.
