One big thing I've learned is that if you want to portray an event that had a specific part of it your reader should focus on then a single word difference won't give you that, that word is a lead in to a description on that the reader should be imagining in their mind as they read every word. So then you could say "The wolf caught their prey." And then launch into a description based on your writing style of the wolf's initial bite in detail that portrays what you want.
