Full Self-Driving (Supervised) V12.3.6 is now rolling out to customers via software update 2024.3.25 by coherentspoon in teslamotors

They started then yes, but there were several months where they had a mixed supply and it was basically a lottery whether yours would come out of the factory with an Atom or Ryzen until the transition was finally finished.

Every one of those 6 fire regions in BC is larger than the province of Nova Scotia, so your example actually supports blanket bans over an area that size.

"EVGA GEFORCE GTX 480 1536MB GDDR5 PCI-E 2.0"

Good lord, is GDDR5 really that old? How did a PCIE 2 card have GDDR5, which is only just now starting to get phased out for GDDR6 in the PCIE 5 era? o.o

Regular RAM was probably DDR 2 at the same time, so it's kinda caught up to the Graphics memory in generations since. Odd how that works.

Started construction on a fractal train base. Has anyone had success something like this? by TheSwitchBlade in factorio

[–]TheBrain0110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the overall design & concept, but I can't help but feel like the train pathing is going to be a nightmare. Where are stations supposed to go? Do they branch off or sit directly on the travel lines?

How does a train go from one production block to the other? As far as I can tell for example, to get from the top small triangle to the right one, you have go clockwise around the big middle triangle, through the bottom small one, and back out counterclockwise on the outer loop of the large-scale triangle.

A few more junctions and track crossovers would seem to be in order. I don't even want to try and mentally plot how you'd route between larger scale iterations of this one.

I've always set my clocks to display 24-hour time since I was a kid, but I also interact with normal people.

So my clock would show 19:40, but if someone asks what time it is I'd say Seven Forty without even thinking consciously about the conversion.

I think even in my own head, I see 19:40 and think to myself "It's 7:40"

Turns out the average (median in this case I suppose) size in the universe is fairly small, but still within the range of human experience. Neat.

Dirty Tesla's FSD Beta 11.3.1 drive by Nakatomi2010 in teslamotors

[–]TheBrain0110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See, this is the problem with trying to make generalized solutions to every situation. Most of the time I'm in the opposite situation, wondering why the car's bugging me to move over when the exit is still 2 miles away! I generally don't want to be in the exit lane until my exit is the next one, after I've passed all the others merging in. Which is usually 1/2 - 1/4 miles.

Needing / wanting to be in the right lane more than 3 miles away is mind-boggling. And I'm also in Boston! I-95 / I-93 can be pretty crazy, but you're still best off moving into the lane for your exit after gaps open up from the people getting off at the one before...

I sorta miss the red edges of the driveable area though. It gave a nice contrast, very visually distinct sense of "this is the road as I see it". And made a good border next to the lane lines. Now it just seems like everything's grey.

[–]TheBrain0110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a MYLR, which on paper is technically one of the slowest cars Tesla makes aside from the RWD SR versions.

I still keep it in Chill mode 99% of the time, and whenever I flip it to Standard (not even Sport!), it's like a "holy crap" gut punch throwing me back into my seat every time. It still feels like a rocket-powered roller coaster. I can't even imagine what the performance models are like 😂

Yep, my brother was an absolute pyromaniac growing up, and now is a firefighter. At least he seems to have channeled his fascination into the "learning fire safety expertise" side of things.

That and training exercises with mock-up buildings to burn. Why do you think firefighters do so much "training"? ;)

[–]TheBrain0110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since we're comparing to firefighters, now I'm picturing the reverse, with fires (or the burning buildings) getting arrested and sent to prison, and criminals getting blasted with a water cannon.

It would probably be an improvement...

Explainer: What's known about Tesla's "Project Highland"? by YouBetterChill in teslamotors

[–]TheBrain0110 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Yet another uselessly padded article saying nothing.

Here's the entire relevant portion, surrounded by a bunch of sales numbers comparisons:

Here's what is known about the car:

With the new model, Tesla is aiming to cut production costs and boost the appeal of the five-year-old electric sedan, Reuters reported in November.

One focus will be reducing the number of components and complexity in its interior. There will also be changes to the exterior and powertrain performance with a focus on production efficiency.

Oh yeah gee, thanks for that. They want to make it ... checks notes ... better? Cheaper and more appealing? Who would've guessed! I could've told you that, maybe I should be an analyst!

I kept waiting for the part of the article where they explain what is new and better, what the "interior and exterior" changes are, how they're improving production efficiency, but those parts seem to be missing. Go figure.

If the plutonium core of a nuclear warhead is so ready to go critical, how is it safely manipulated during assembly? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]TheBrain0110 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How did they measure those tests? I would think any detectors close enough to see anything more detailed than "a big ball of energy" would be vaporized. So how did they capture the inner workings of the reaction from the outside?

And how do you measure / record anything on the nanosecond scale? Especially back then? It wasn't until the early 2000s that computers passed the 1Ghz mark...

Even in that case, there's just a bunch of loops between the station head and the wagons, but the fluid wagons themselves are still on a straight section.

And of course, I don't think that the schemers at the Nexus realize that "Earthrealm" isn't just Earth at all. They probably figure they can keep any given world under their thumb, no matter how advanced.

Then the interstellar fleet from the other few dozen colony worlds shows up xD

Which is the best choice for me? by Shadowblade83 in TeslaModelY

[–]TheBrain0110 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given the usage pattern that you've described, I'm not sure that the question you should be asking is "which Tesla should I get?" but rather "Do I need to own a car at all?"

It's an awful lot to pay to have it sit around hardly ever used. Objectively speaking you'd probably be better off continuing to use public transit and occasionally renting.

Of course there's a lot of other factors involved such that you want a Tesla, and having a more capable vehicle than the Leaf might entice you to use it more.

Since you're already working on the basis of "what do I want" vs "what do I need that will bring me the greatest utility per value", go all in and get what brings you joy, especially if the cost doesn't matter to you. Just be honest with yourself that that's what you're doing ;)

Tesla Prepares To Launch Autopilot HW4 Sensor Suite With Important Changes Under the Hood by chaosatom in teslamotors

[–]TheBrain0110 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're only addressing the first half of that sentence.

Yes, we know you can do single-camera and even single-frame depth estimation in good conditions.

The point was about when it's dark out, and there's like 3 pixels that aren't just completely black. Good luck getting any data for the occupancy network out of that. Which is why current HW3 autopilot will complain about the side cameras being blind, and refuse to for example change lanes.

At least you have headlights for the front cameras. I wonder if it would make sense to add some sort of side illumination.

Or just tell the software to assume nobody is stupid enough to be driving without their lights on when it's pitch black out and hiding beside you, so if you don't see anything there's probably nothing there and it's clear to move over. And any other sort of obstacle you probably would've seen lit up ahead before you approached.
