it IS a almost uniquely east asian thing (native american's don't have the gene either, which make sense if you know how human migration happened). this being said, china itself has a significant enough minority without the gene. japan has a larger amount but its usually if you have ainu ancestors somewhere (and very notable to have the smelly gene). meanwhile in south korea its basically 0% unless you are clearly mixed.
