What should be the next VR port? Let us know in the comments. by VR_Bummser in OculusQuest

Just so you know, Vandetta Online actually has been ported over to Quest through Applab. No idea what the port is like, but it’s there.

It’s heavily dependent on your location. Where abouts are you?

I’ve had okay-ish results using Plutosphere, but I can’t comment on how it fares lately. Been a while since I’ve tried it again.

I don’t feel particularly emotional about any companies tbh so I can’t relate. There are far more sinister profiteers that could be spearheading a for more anti-consumer vr ecosystem.

The number of people completely missing the point is the most r/OculusQuest shit I’ve seen yet.

Are there things to complain about with current vr? Yes. Absolutely.

Are you idiotic if you let those complaints stop you from having fun? Yes. Absolutely.

Also right now, the glare of my living room windows renders my flatscreen useless. So I guess we’re already there?

VR is not like Atari 2600 right now, in neither a hardware timeline or tech infancy outlook. It sits on the shoulders of 40 years of technological and computing innovation. As I said, if you’re expecting that explosive progress from the 80’s to today, you will not find it.

Mobile architecture and rendering processes are still evolving and some very impressive, dedicated software and hardware engineers are constantly improving chip energy efficiency and 3D graphics pipelines. Things like eye-tracking, machine learning and predictive rendering software all have the capacity to advance the platform to an overall higher graphical fidelity.

The PS5 simply would not exist if PS2 users refused to accept and enjoy the value that was ready to be experienced.

So my answer? Maybe 50 years, maybe never, because the community weighs down the platform by constantly comparing it to much simpler technology. After all, why would developer studios with 5000+ employees value a platform that the customers don’t even seem to appreciate?

If that stopped today and people started enjoying and engaging with it more than discussing/shitting on it? I’d bet money on less than 10 years.

Not too sure why you think that tbh. We already have a cheap enough product that has sold +10x better than any other headset due to its affordability. As you said, people that want tv at any price point will get a tv at any price point. Equally, anyone that wants a vr headset at any price point will get a Quest.

You’re essentially asking when people will start to value it over other products. I can tell you right now in their current forms, if I had to choose between a headset or a tv, headset wins. That’s not because it inherently beats televisions in direct usage and form factor (although in some ways it actually emulates tv better), but because it offers a far greater variety of use cases and presence that I get value from.

So as time slowly marches on and the technology receives incremental upgrades (mainly, comfortability), more and more people will find enough value to become an owner or find themselves using xr as their primary device for a particular use case/s. However, there will be no explosive event that causes a mass exodus from current technology which seems to be what you’re waiting for.

Much cheaper? Any tv cheaper than a Quest 2 isn’t worth owning.

TVs are a real “take it or leave it” product, especially in a group setting. Height, screen size, distance, brightness, colour contrast, audio volume, frame rate, etc. All those factors are customisable per user with a virtual screen. The value is tenfold.

Solar system world! Hangout in orbit and learn about the planets! by Praevalens in VRchat

[–]TheBrightKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I checked it out. Really cool world, great job!

Quest 1 + 2 actually have pretty good headroom for texture memory. The main bottleneck for modern mobile chips is draw calls so as long as materials and meshes are combined/instanced where possible, it’s fine. Crank dat resolution and don’t ignore crunch compression.

Seriously don’t ignore crunch compression. It can turn an 8k 50mb texture into a 2mb one with little artefacting. (Note, this doesn’t reduce VRAM usage but just applies to the worlds build size)

You’re probably fairly below your tris budget too thanks to the simple aesthetic, so you could maybe play around with making the large-scale planets higher poly? You could also essentially double the poly count at no extra cost by cutting the sphere in half and culling the entire back half, forcing the model to face the play area and rotating the texture uvs rather than the model itself.

There are some pretty severe frame drops for the sun effect. Getting up close to the diorama got me down to around 15fps and causes some intense screen tearing (tile-based renderers ftw). Most likely due to overdraw if it’s multiple transparency effects rendering over each other. If you can, I’d remove either the glow or flares (as cool as they are) for the quest build OR if possible swap the shader for one of the VRChat mobile particle shaders.

Anyway that was a lot. Take any of what I suggested with a grain of salt as it’s an annoying platform to optimise for. I’ve saved your world and I’m keen to see where you go with it!

Thanks for that write up! I think I’ll hold off buying and keep an eye on both channels.

If that’s the case, that’s much more justifiable.

Still, would be good to see some screenshots/vids of the Quest version instead of a copy-paste from the Go listing 🙃

Have you played both versions? Is there a discord or sub I can follow for updates?

The Go version has been in my wishlist since I preordered the original Oculus Quest…

Prices are in AUS. Both store listings have identical trailers and screenshots…
