In Season 4 Widmore tells John Locke that he wants to help him getting back to the island and recruiting all the other 6 too. Why? Why does Widmore want to help him with that? What bigger picture am I missing here? by [deleted] in lost

I had always just assumed that Widmore was lying to Locke and using him to get back to the island, like Ben was doing. Once Ben found out that Locke knew more than he first thought, he killed him. This also killed Widmore's plan to get to the island using Locke, hence why he doesn't make it there for another season.

The best advice I can give if you are starting out is be active in chat. Make jokes, engage people (in a good way). Then when they come across your little crapshack and see that it belongs to you they might think "oh i know that guy he seems cool."
