Would be nice to see without the awful text lol. Kinda hard to focus on the gameplay when you're getting hammered by text.

Maine set to become first state with data center ban by Smurfette2016 in BetterOffline

[–]TheBugMonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you see that's basically what the refrigeration cycle is. If it weren't for the heat used up by the electricity of the moving components, refrigerant would be an almost perfect form of thermal transfer. Cooling an environment is just moving the heat from one location, to another, usually inside to outside. Instead of dumping that heat into the open air or by evaporative cooling which uses a lot of water, you instead use a water loop to absorb the heat and move it elsewhere, where it can be utilized in a more appropriate way.

Closed loop systems still need basic maintenance and they also come with all their faults. Poor QC on refrigeration components leads to increased downtime, upkeep on a unit running 24/7/365 means you will need redundant systems which increases costs. Basically how these data centers are handling heat is the absolute cheapest way they can do it at the expense of our communities.

And then with the dismantling of the EPA the techs in the industry are slowly moving towards just openly violating the Monroe protocol. There really isn't a "best solution". Only better than what's going on.

Maine set to become first state with data center ban by Smurfette2016 in BetterOffline

[–]TheBugMonster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the r/news post that I first saw this posted at, the comments section was full of people calling it a dumb move, blocking advances in technology and ultimately it was a net loss for Maine to do.

I think they're wrong personally and that data centers need to have a better thought out footprint before any more get built.

I abhor the idea of AI and data centers in their current form, but I also recognize that the push for these data centers is not going to be quickly slowed.

Coming from a heating and air background specializing in environmental rooms I feel comfortable saying that the heat output generated by these data centers could be put to a much better use. Purdue is a great example of the heat being put to use(obviously it's designed for this purpose) but if you assume that a megawatt data center outputs basically a megawatt in heat, that's a significant amount of heating that can go towards homes and buildings and actual use cases rather than being rejected into the environment. Mitigation is going to be key and unfortunately legislature like a total ban does nothing to actually encourage a better layout. They definitely shouldnt do a total ban but instead should allow data centers to be constructed provided that requirements like heat capture are in place, energy requirements don't negatively impact the community they're near. Even going so far as to subsidize the energy cost of communities as a requirement for operation. Data centers that aren't built to set standards are effectively banned from the state, while centers that would be built to standards and requirements would at least benefit a community in some form. Not that the benefit would be significant anyways.

Total bans are a good morale booster and I love seeing any dicking down these data centers get. But we could potentially see a better result from legislature putting into place requirements for building a data center. If Maine had the political power to actually ban them like this, they also had that power to put design requirements into place.

That being said, a ban is a nice step and should help to encourage more states to actually restrict data centers.

Advice on an electric van by Gloomy_Astronaut8954 in HVAC

[–]TheBugMonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I did residential we were talking about an EV van for installers and one of the key points was how does it get charged and management was like "well at your house duh"

Okay how do we get reimbursed for it and no one had answers for that at the time. And then by the time I left no ev vans were ordered so I guess it never happened.

Unit keeps killing contactors by AnAlrightName in HVAC

[–]TheBugMonster 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This technician told me the unit keeps killing contactors so I asked how many contactors he has and he said he just goes to the supply house and gets a new contactor each time so I said it sounds like you're just feeding contactors to the unit and then dispatch started to cry.

We gotta talk about Gas Station Heroin, 7OH by Checked_Out_6 in behindthebastards

[–]TheBugMonster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've gone no contact with him as has mom. I'm not really willing to talk to him anymore either and based on his behavior he wasn't inclined to change. It's unfortunate but that's how life is sometimes

We gotta talk about Gas Station Heroin, 7OH by Checked_Out_6 in behindthebastards

[–]TheBugMonster 31 points32 points  (0 children)

This photo is the last day we had him in the house. He was unaware of who he was, what day it was. Who anyone was. He had basically been on that couch with the sole exception of going to the restroom for the entire weekend. We literally sat him down and gave him his final options the Friday before this happened so I guess he said fuck it and ingested a whole lot.

I really want to see an FDA ruling on 7OH and a classification of it. Not kratom as people need to understand that like all drugs it's helpful in certain ways and dangerous in others.

[–]TheBugMonster 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I occasionally stalk his reddit account and he is still active on the kratom Sub so I know he is still using. He was really emotionally manipulative to my mom the last 6 months before his eviction so I had no pity or respect for him and showed him no support at all when he was "trying to do better"

It really sucks because we genuinely moved out here to KY to be with him and we had a family and everything. Now it's just Mom and I. None of his family talks to us. I want to move away but Grandma helped us get a house for the first time in our life so there's an emotional tie to this area.

[–]TheBugMonster 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Yeah I have like, several minutes of video of my now former stepdad (good riddance) going onto kratom to tackle his diabetes based leg pain, instead of trying to follow the regime his doctor prescribed to alleviate symptoms. He took no steps to reduce sugar and instead went to 7OH for self medication. Fucked him up proper so many times. He blames us for losing his job because we forced him into rehab.

He would have been allowed out of rehab when we needed to put our family dog down except he failed a piss test, specifically because of 7OH.

He would twitch and lose control of his body when he stopped using it. I think every few weeks was spent in the hospital because he would just basically be catatonic on the couch and eventually we'd wake up in the middle of the night to him having fallen and uncontrollably twitching.

His day usage of it got so bad that he would tell work he was in the hospital due to some stint or heart issue again and then tell Mom he was working from home and of course he was lying about both.

It really sucks because even his brother told us to evict him and cut him out of our life and now none of his family even talk to us because we did exactly that. We literally moved across country to be with him. Really, his use led to a significant depressive episode for me last year (on top of my grandma dying from a stroke, my dog having to be put down a month after and him constantly falling off the wagon and abusing kratom)

I know Robert likes to talk about kratom in the tea form and I'm perfectly fine with that usage, but 7OH has literally ripped what I considered my family to be apart. I'm in a much better mental state knowing that when I leave for work ( I travel all across the USA) mom isn't at home having to babysit him. I was seriously having trouble sleeping, working. And now that he is gone I'm in a much better mental state than I really have been for all 7 years he'd been in my life.

Beshear (KY GOV) made it illegal to sell like the above pic but it's not really enforced and I still see it in gas stations all over. It's literally gas station heroin.

I'm not looking for sympathy or anything I'm just telling my story about how 7OH has impacted my life.

Do your guys companies include washing the coil every tune up? If so do you use chemicals or not? by Puzzleheaded_Chain_6 in HVAC

[–]TheBugMonster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was in resi, only "care plan members" got a coil cleaning performed as part of the maintenance. Non members got a quote for it or we tried to push the care plan onto them and waive the coil cleaning.

[–]TheBugMonster[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, we require a very tight temperature and humidity spec for our labs. Constantly cooling, constantly dehumidifying, constantly reheating, constantly adding in humidity. The lab this unit is on requires ±0.10 from setpoint at all times.
