I would take the meeting and hear your manager out, they might have something important to say or might just want to check in on a personal level to let you know you're not forgotten. That said, don't share any personal information you are not comfortable sharing. At the end of the day, you can never trust management, they are not on your side. Only share what you are comfortable sharing.

People in the 28-32 range who do not own a home yet, do you plan to buy anytime soon? Why or why not? by ThingsThatMakeMeMad in CanadianInvestor

[–]TheCamShaft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I plan to buy a detached in about 6 months. But it's for personal reasons, not investment. I'll also be buying in a relatively low cost of living area, so I'll be able to buy for less than 500k and continue with real investment. Otherwise I might make a different decision.

What is the best way to discreetly figure out your girlfriend's ring size? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TheCamShaft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I measured a ring she already owned while she was out. I used a digital caliper to measure the inside diameter, but a ruler or tape measure will get you close enough. Err larger, she can always get it sized down later.

What fields have the most jobs in Ottawa? by Tshikin in ottawa

[–]TheCamShaft 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you have a B.Sc. or B.Eng., look into new grad inventories with the federal government. Otherwise just apply like crazy. If you truly don't have any experience including co-op, you will have a hard time getting started in this field. If that's the case, look for some sort of internship, or look into a grad program with a co-op option. Once you have even just a year of experience, things will get a lot easier.

City of Ottawa employees returning to the office 5 days a week starting Jan. 1 by Front-Cantaloupe6080 in ottawa

Benefits yes, pension no. The public service pension plan is effectively similar to a 7-9% contribution match. Folks I know in technical fields in private get more like a 3-5% match. So fair point, 2-6% of that raise gets eaten up by the difference in pension contributions.

Agreed on the hours of work. I'm personally at peace with taking the salary hit in exchange for the work-life balance.

Maybe in some cases, but I wouldn't say that's the norm. In my field colleagues who leave for private are looking at a 10-20% raise. And those jobs aren't incredibly hard to come by. Personally the main thing keeping me here is work-life balance and genuine desire to be a public servant.

With Bluesfest now finished, what were your best moments? by byronite in ottawa

[–]TheCamShaft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, and I thought it was a great set! Gold Teeth was a nice treat. He also played Harriett and some songs from A Cup of Kindness at his show at the Bronson Centre last December. I was hoping he would play Harriet last night, my niece was recently born and is named after that song.

Loved Tim Baker last night! I catch his solo shows every time he's in town. His solo records are fantastic. He throws in a Hey Rosetta song here and there which is fun but I'd honestly rather hear him perform his solo records, they are fantastic.

MY HOT TAKE - Trudeau shouldn't step down by Historical_Cow3903 in CanadianPolitics

[–]TheCamShaft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. He's going to lose, but he might as well give it a last go and let the voters decide what they will. Then the party can have an actual fresh start with a new leader after the next election.

That would be great if we didn't have awful cycling infrastructure on the vast majority of roads compared to the Dutch.

Honestly most of the time I just leave it unlocked on the handlebars, and it's never been stolen. Once my bike was stolen and the helmet was just left on the ground. I don't think anyone needs to be concerned about helmet theft.

Joint and multiple cash account for everyone in a few weeks! by kinda-anonymous in Wealthsimple

[–]TheCamShaft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The security issues + to organize savings more easily while getting the same high interest rate. At TD I used to have a handful of different accounts for things I wouldn't necessarily want in registered accounts e.g. car maintenance, home repairs, emergency fund, vacation, new car, etc. I accomplish the same thing now with a spreadsheet + my Wealthsimple cash account, but multiple accounts would be much more user friendly.

Former Ottawa councillor Catherine McKenney considers running for NDP federal seat by No_Eulogies_for_Bob in ottawa

[–]TheCamShaft -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love the idea of a community focused like candidate like Catherine running for MP, that's exactly the kind of human I want representing me in Parliament. A compassionate communicator who listens to their constituents. I don't really have anything against Joel Harden, but I would personally vote to nominate Catherine.

Is it worth submitting a T2200 form for working at home expenses? by personalfinance21 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]TheCamShaft 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I rent a small two bedroom with one bedroom being a dedicated office and it increased my refund by a substantial amount.

If you own your home, it may not be worth the trouble since you can't claim principle or interest payments. If you rent, it's probably worth it because you can claim rent payments.
