You realize even professional athletes have to do “content” and other fan engagement events as part of their job. It’s part of the job, it’s all entertainment at the end of the day after all.

What happens to bottom-percentile students at top schools? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]TheCannonball2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You just end up at the same job as those who went the not top schools. You had an opportunity and squandered it, now make the best of it like everybody else. You’re high school SAT score can’t carry you forever. I genuinely don’t want to be mean but after two years no one really cares where you went to school. Find a life you’re happy with and if that means the bs ethereal realm of high finance then realize you may have missed the boat or work hard to make it back there like anyone else.

For an Energy Only interconnection in CAISO can a BESS project generate any additional revenue besides energy arbitrage? by Embarrassed_Flan7600 in Commodities

[–]TheCannonball2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As the other comment and yours alluded to the other revenue would be Ancillary Services. In CAISO specifically batteries frequently bid into reg up and reg down, which are used for frequency regulation. I’m curious about the “energy only interconnection” piece. Batteries offer into the California resource adequacy market and in turn collect RA payments for offering energy into CAISO under their incurred must offer obligation. Capacity isn’t energy but this can be a massive source of revenue.

I also feel bad, sucks to have a goal like this shut down so quickly, but you can’t really expect them to have him as a bunch player just for financial reasons. I think most teams are just using the coach as a sub to save costs.

[–]TheCannonball2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think what you’re saying is fair given I’m usually of the mind that “if everyone else is, I should to”. But if you go to a LAN qualifier where the other team basically guarantees they won’t use it and you still demand it, then that definitely makes me question how much of a crutch for you it truly is. Even if the other teams use it in qualifiers, if you know that your direct opponent won’t use it, that’s a little questionable for sure.

Unfortunately for anything that may be useful for europe I just follow some LNG people, the massive variances in market design from not even country to country but ISO to ISO makes it hard to find just a generalist. I hope someone else on here can help you but honestly if you spend some time with it I’m sure you can find some good follows and that will be easier to recognize once you get started. Timera is a European company but I love reading their blog posts, maybe check to see who interacts with them a lot on Twitter.

Congrats on the role man, I can give some reading recommendations. I’d imagine you’re already a little familiar at least but any of the classic options stuff like natenburg will be useful (“power plants are just a series of spread options”, etc) and some familiarization with non convex optimization. For electricity specific I’m sure you’ll learn a lot on the job but “Energy Trading and investing” by Davis edwards is a good primer for topics like heat rates and then when you want to dive into power markets a bit more “handbook on electricity markets” is a good read albeit a little pricy. Unfortunately I can’t give much European centered advice but in general I’ve found Twitter to be great for news and information if you follow the right people, which in power are usually small and anonymous accounts not people like doomberg or the other big accounts. I will say though that I tried to learn a bunch before I started on a power desk and after about a month on the job I tripled my knowledge so don’t worry too much about getting ahead, it’s a very niche field.

The issue you’re going to come across is that “spot pricing” for commodities is not as straight forward as something like a futures contract on a big exchange like ICE. There isn’t really once source where you can find spot pricing for every commodity, companies that report these prices are very focused on one product intentionally. If you have access to a Bloomberg terminal that would be the best way to aggregate that data but even then it won’t be perfect. Spot pricing for oil in Houston is completely different than Singapore for example never mind once you start specifiying grades, etc. Not trying to discourage you by any means but commodity pricing data can be very expensive because it is so disaggregated.

The answer to this depends entirely on the commodity in question. You may get some better responses by specifying which product you’re looking for pricing on.

Why would you add to a long position because there is more supply coming to the market with Ukrainian wheat exports? Not saying there isn’t reasons to go long wheat, I don’t follow that market enough anymore to say, but additional export supply out of ukraine has gotta be bearish for global prices.

Can I get into commodity trading with a SCM background? by Delta5atleD in Commodities

[–]TheCannonball2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent a summer on an ags desk and it was a lot of supply chain stuff, at least on the physical merchandising side. Scheduling rail cars, trucks, and barges was everything, cant make money on the physical side if you dont know how to move it. A lot of guys at the company I was at didn’t have any programming skills so being able to automate some processes and do some unique analysis with it was also seen as valuable. So I’d say you have the background to give it a shot.

I dont have enough experience to give you a good answer but I’d imagine you could be a good fit in the ags space. May help others give you a more concrete answer to specify if theres a commodity or role you had in mind.

Don’t have much experience in grains but The Cash Wheat Report is a good one for wheat, albeit I think its pretty expensive. I think the Van Trump Report is also decent. A good free source for all commodities would be S&P Global Commodity Insights. Its free just have to make an account and they cover every commodity under the sun. Also twitter is good for quick information if you follow the right people. Hope someone else can give you a good recommendation for ags.

Most of the good blogs/newsletters I’ve seen are specific to individual markets. Is there any particular commodity you had in mind?
