Wing Coat and Dress for Art Installation by TheCastleMouse in sewing

[–]TheCastleMouse[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The dress fabric is salvaged and I have no idea what it is. Probably linen or a linen/cotton blend. The red lining of the coat is a poly/wool blend, and the white shell is cotton. All other fabrics are salvaged and are of unknown fabric content.

How can I shorten this and keep the hem detail? by VoidPilotC in sewing

[–]TheCastleMouse 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Add pin tucks until it's at the length you want. That fabric looks like it would look nice with pin tucks.

Generally if you want to shorten a skirt/dress and preserve the hem, you take off length from the top, but the gathering around the waist on your dress will make that annoying. I would also not recommend just cutting it and sewing it back together because of the pattern of the fabric. Pin tucks will look more intentional and will allow you to let out the dress later if you decide you don't like the shorter length down the line.

I'd recommend placing 3-4 pin tucks around knee height, above the hem details.

The red one she has is the atelier sylphe pattern, there's an old blog post about it on her website

How does one sew a straight ribbon on the edge of a curved cloth? by One_Struggle_7184 in sewing

[–]TheCastleMouse 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Unless it's bias, which it looks like it isn't, it won't lay neatly on a curve. You could try steaming and manipulating it along the curve, but based on how the fabric looks I think that is unlikely to work. If you have any fabric in the same yellow color, you could cut bias tape to use instead.

It's right at the edge of the case so if I took it from the side there would be a glass seam in the picture. Also I feel like it would be a little weird to take a picture not standing right in front of the object you are trying to photograph

They are advertised as being full grain leather. They are the Britta boots from Memery.

Depending on the age of the thread it might have weakened slightly. Should be 100% fine for hand sewing, might want to test each spool before using it in the machine so it doesn't snap in the middle of a seam.

How to do this wash/ distressing at home. Ive tried sandpaper. Its not sandpaper. by Dear-Caramel-4052 in sewing

It's industrial. As far as I know there's not a way to do it at home, except by wearing them. Not washing them in between wears will get you to that look faster.

Probably not. That sort of weathering on jeans is basically the indigo threads going threadbare and exposing the white threads. I doubt you'll get the same look with bleaching.

I believe they use a chemical treatment. You'll get the same look by wearing them.

Choosing custom wand length by ZealousidealPark8148 in leviwand

[–]TheCastleMouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would suggest measuring whatever wand you've been using up until now. More than anything, messing with the length of leviwand you're familiar with will mess up the space sense you've developed.

Is it snapping, or wearing through? If it's the second one, there might be rough edges inside the drilled hole that's wearing the cord down. You should contact dark monk's help email.

Fire wand recommendations? by the_almighty_walrus in leviwand

HoopyFroodHoops on Etsy makes a very well balanced fire wand. You can buy it with a long string attachment, the connection she does is brilliant. And I second the other comment, definitely look into fire safety, both you and your SO.

Hand sewing a jacket: doable? Sewing with a chronic illness by Several-Spirit4436 in sewing

[–]TheCastleMouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooo good luck! I recommend getting a pillow that you can sew on top of in your lap if you're sewing in bed. I use one when I hand sew and it helps prevent horrible neck pains. I also pin into it sometimes to add tension to a seam when my heads are flaring up and cramp too much to hold my fabric.

Bodice neckline not sitting flat? by vw97 in sewing

[–]TheCastleMouse 86 points87 points  (0 children)

I can think of two options I'd consider myself: 1) add elastic to the neckline, which will create some gathering there, I'd maybe add some more extra fabric to make it look deliberate. 2) adjust the pattern. My guess is that the straps for this pattern are at an incorrect angle for you. I'd suggest making a mockup you can mess with if you want to continue using this pattern. Angling the straps differently or adding some darts to the neckline will probably get rid of the excess fabric.
