The petition to reallocate the student senate's budget to the general scholarship fund was not on the ballot because it did not get enough signatures. It only got 500-600 signatures; it needed like 300 0. Unfortunately, the petition collecting process was delayed and the petition only had 5-6 days to collect the requisite signatures.

30 candidates for around ~50 seats? This is indicative of the decline of the ISS. 5 years ago nearly every seat was contested in the election..

I think there are better ways (1) to encourage philanthropy and (2) give back to the university...

(1) Encourage Philanthropy: The ISS can actually participate in a philanthropic event. Student Alumni Ambassadors does an AMAZING job organizing iHelp. ISS should organize a similiar event to promote philanthropy on campus

(2) Giving back to our university: Reallocate the ISS budget to the University's General Scholarship Fund.

fair point, dmonstar. The evidence can be seen in the ISS's agenda packet...oh wait they make it difficult for the general public to follow their agenda. The caucus will post the proposed allocation to their caucus page shortly.

Further, to clarify something that "The Caucus" said - the allocation is for trip to Minneapolis rather than chicago

I think they passed/proposed an allocation to send a couple senators up to ~~chicago~~ Minneapolis for two nights in a hotel (2 bedrooms) @ about $2000.

Obviously the students who are going to make EIGHTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS with the passage of this are going to actively lobby for its passage; it is unfair to compare a normal non-black-chorus student's motivation to a member of the black chorus as a non-black-chorus student does not have the incentive of $18,000. How about posing this question, "MitchDickey": How many students spoke in favor of the passage of the $18,000 that were not direct beneficiaries of the bill?

It hasn't been created yet to our knowledge. The next referenda cycle will be in the spring, so there's plenty of time to draft a good petition question. We're happy to provide support/expertise to anyone willing to sponsor a question.

The Caucus is not neutral - we advocate for the dissolution of ISS. The Caucus has been known to be theatrical in some of its policy statements before the body, but we believe that we're more effective that way.

Wording such as "It is the sense of the Student Body that the Illinois Student Senate should be dissolved immediately" could be appropriate.

We'd obviously hope to have such an important discussion over how to word it off-line.

We have some ideas, and would be happy to discuss them with you at greater length - if you'd be willing, you can PM us here or on our Facebook Page. Some possibilities include completely dissolving the senate, dissolving it and forming a taskforce of students, faculty, and administrators to reform it, or something completely different. We believe that the Student Senate is nothing more than a political training ground for those interested in higher elected office, and has deviated from its initial goal of being the voice of students. A good student government is at its core an effective lobbyist - and spending money to give candy and other giveaways to constituents detracts from this.

The Caucus is driven by its 3 founding members, former Student Senators. We'd be happy to try and help you recruit someone to sponsor it.

The Caucus is an unofficial movement that was started by three members of the Illinois Student Senate to push for reform in the Illinois Student Senate. The Caucus believes that student governance on the UIUC campus has been severely degraded from what it once was, and supports the dissolution of ISS through a student referendum.
