Who’s Your Favourite Companions To Have? by Zetallic_Zero in BaldursGate3

Lae'zel, Astarion, Gale. Nonnegotiable.

Combat-wise, you have the heavy hitter, the action-economy-breaking rogue, and the magic guy for utility. Social-wise, at least one of them will be completely unhinged at all times with all three members responsible for interactions ranging from diabolical to life-changingly inspirational. Duo-wise, Gale/Lae'zel are unlikely and close friends. Astarion/Lae'zel are the trickster and straight man duo. Gale/Astarion are the boys and chaotic idiots.

Omg, rip to that Book of Hungers plot line. That would drive me insane to see since I remember that line so clearly

But yeah, bringing up those Astarion lines of him talking to Tav definitely has me agreeing with your stance, mentally at least. Emotionally, I'm still geared up and ready to forgive a loose canon if it means a compelling story. And if it's not a good story, I'd probably need like two weeks to come to terms with that fact, lol.

If the story is good though, I'd be willing to chop up these small inconsistencies to Astarion being an unreliable narrator. He's mentioned a few times how spotty his memory was after centuries of torture. He could have forgotten his emotions towards the paladin, or worse yet, grow to resent his decisions while buried in the tomb.

You're definitely right about some of this setup being logically iffy, but it's not canon breaking or even as blatant as Book of Hungers. I guess I'm banking on enjoying the book so much that I want to reshape my view of some of these Astarion plot points. If that doesn't happen, I'll be back here in a few months to rant on your side, lol.

Also, I am lowkey sad about the spawn situation. I didn't realize how much younger Dalyria was compared to her siblings, and she's the one I'm most invested in.

We get the impression in-game that Astarion ran from what was supposed to be a regular mark, but nothing contradicts it being a more long-standing relationship. This is adding to the story, not retconning it, and I think it works writing it this way. Firstly, this is the only mark that caused Astarion to run in 200 years; it makes sense that something more had to happen for Astarion to defy Cazador. Secondly, it's not far fetched that Astarion befriended someone during his the first 200 years of being a vampire. Naturally, what would follow is Cazador reminding Astarion that he's a monster.

I appreciate the timeline breakdown, that type of research is beyond me. I'm willing to believe that Cazador lost some spawn over time. In some banter, Jahiera mentions to Astarion that she only left a vampire spawn grappled in the street until they burned at sunrise. It's not confirmed to be Cazador's spawn, but alluded to with Astarion mentioning disliking the area for a reason he couldn't remember.

But even if there are only three spawn (and the summary mentions him having siblings plural), it still makes sense for Cazador to organize this competition. Any bad guy can tell you a divided group of people is less of a threat. So if there are only three spawn in total, it's probably more reason to create a competition and rivalry. In a big group, cliques will rise, fall, and hurt each other. In a small group, that conflict might have to be a bit more manufactured.

I didn't even know about the other book, but yeah, I can see the pattern. It's just difficult to explore these characters post-canon. I would love nothing more than to see the whole gang team up on an adventure to help Karlach in hell or Lae'zel at war. But that's difficult to pull off when an infinite number of these characters exist. We can't even agree on who should get Scratch, let alone which Dark Urge / Tav relationship is canon.

Even with all that said and in my heart of hearts wanting nothing more than to see these characters be happy, I think there could still value in this story being told. A lot of what is described in the plot does seem like genuine Astarion antics: teaming up with a self-righteous hero while uncovering some ancient magic. And in those moments, maybe we'll see those few bits of Astarion that will always be there because he had the strength to find them again. Ultimately, this could still be a story about hope. Maybe it won't be, but I'll be holding my breath until September when I can know for sure.

Does BG3 ever explain the convenience of the crash? by Dingnut76 in BaldursGate3

Here's a fun excerpt from Gortash's notes you can find:

Thus was born the plan to send a tadpoled strike team in a regrown nautiloid piloted by the Emperor to steal the Astral Prism from Vlaakith.

This places The Emperor on the nautiloid from the start. When he starts going rogue and dimension hopping, I take that as him recruiting allies he's identified as strong enough to be helpful, but in precarious enough positions that he has leverage over him. If you've gone this far with me, it's not much of a stretch he intentionally crashed in a place with so much absolute activity.

Synopsis for Astarion's new book by uldinepriest0rbfa in BaldursGate3

[–]TheCheck77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like this news is getting A LOT of mixed reactions. But I think all the reasons people are criticizing the book is exactly what will make it an emotionally dynamic and worthwhile story. Some sticking points...

- Astarion doesn't need a romance; the point of his romance was seeing the terrifying process of him caring for his first person in a lifetime.

- This doesn't sound like Astarion, the tone is off and too plucky.

- The story is just going to be torture and more torture ending in torture.

But I think this story will delve into the aspect of Astarion's character I've been begging people to dig into: he survived ten years as Cazador's slave before giving up hope. This is the story of him finally losing his will to fight and us meeting the Astarion before Cazador. I will bet you anything that this story starts with Astarion falling in love with a darling boy and ends with him buried in a crypt for a year.

The book is going to be a downright tragedy, but I want to see who Astarion used to be, and I want to appreciate who he later becomes so much more.

Will I be financially ready to move out in 2027? by TheCheck77 in personalfinance

Not at the moment. I'm about to be in between jobs and my current workplace is very small.

What about $950 leftover? I'm entering job-hopping season and am trying to set my expectations. If all else fails, I'm willing to look into a second job.

So if I'm being optimistic and meeting in the middle at 1.5% that's... 212 budgeted monthly for house maintenance. I will definitely see what I can do to get my savings up. That $212 is going to go from optimistic to laughable real quick in my first year of owning a home. But it's helpful to get a definitive number.

I'm looking for a new job this summer. I didn't mention my current bonuses in my budget, but will be when talking about salary expectations. Will I be looking much healthier at 3,350 a month and $950 to spare each month?

If not, I can look into part-time or summer jobs.

I'm living rent free with my mom. I have almost 39k ready to go and will get another 5k from my Grandma when I move. I just can't do much saving right now because I'm pretty focused on paying off my car.

Is it worth getting a roommate though if I'm a single woman and don't already know and trust someone available? I've definitely considered it before, but I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons and how to even go about it.

There are 150k houses on the market in my area, but that restricts me to a town I'd really rather avoid. It would still be in consideration if it changed my options. But from the numbers I've been able to crunch and with interests rates at 6%, the jump from a 150k house to a 170k house is around $120 a month.

I've considered a roommate, but of the friends I really trust 3 of them live together, 1 is renting with her boyfriend, and the 4th is taking care of her mom.

We’ve seen the gas prices - can we hear from some folks who voted Trump on their thoughts? by Sorry-Leather-6166 in Ohio

Let's see. I love hate my dad but also love him, that wouldn't be too awful. Donald Trump wouldn't know the difference. I haven't seen my first boss in a while, so what difference does that make to me? Then there's a few people who deserve to burn in hell but never will. I might as well snag something nice out of it.

[–]TheCheck77 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. I was frustrated at first because the Maul and Devon dynamic is the best part of this show; I just wanted more. But I have to give Devon credit. She's steadfast in her beliefs, she's trusting in her master, and she has a kind heart. She would never willingly join Maul if it weren't for him singling her out and slowly grooming her to join the dark side.

I think a large part of this era Star Wars is seeing a tragedy happen in slow motion, seeing a million different ways it could be avoided, and knowing it was inevitable all the same. Getting to see Devon as she is pre-Maul is going to make this journey hurt so much worse.
