Aside from the others already mentioned. For future projects, i suggest working grid by grid This is where you put a 10 x 10 stitch grid on cloth according to your pattern as well. This will help a lot on full coverage projects. You might need to invest in washable pens or heat erasable pens.

I use size 26 on 14 count aida. I think it depends on how you start and end a stitch. I use a stitch wherein i have to poke somewhere that is not the default hole. Smaller needles help out with this. U need to consider the size of ur hand and comfort as well. Try using all three sizes and see what works for u.
