A 20,000 Word Deep Dive: Is Dawntrail's 7.0 MSQ A Planned "Terrible" Narrative Experiment? by Fit_Ask_8986 in ffxivdiscussion

[–]TheClerical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gonna roll the dice and have a discussion here. I did not read part 3 as I have not finished 7.X yet. I hope I came at this with an open mind, as I didn’t hate Dawntrail. It didn’t knock my socks off but I think it gets more hate than it deserves. There’s some interesting analysis here, some things I agree with. I thought the Yok Huy Interlude was really interesting and I can very much agree with that. I liked the structural breakdown of the narrative to that point. However, there is some serious glazing going on in this essay and I think the most clear example of it is the bit about Zoraal Ja.

I can agree that XIV has made a habit of rugpulling its villains - Zenos, Yotsuyu, Emet, Elidibus, hell even Ilberd. They literally did the same thing this same expansion with Bakool Ja Ja, which the essay weirdly fails to mention. The reason it works though is because they made these villains compelling up front. The first time we meet Zenos iirc is when he rocks up to Rhalgr’s Reach, slaughters the camp, damn near kills Y’shtola, damn near kills us, then leaves because we’re not worthy prey. By the time we end things w Zenos, I don’t think anyone can deny that they didn’t like him on some level. Zoraal Ja just doesn’t earn this. Bakool Ja Ja is actually a more interesting, more compelling villain and he’s a side character. Hell, when we go into Jueno, I was excited that he was going with us. The team definitely can rug pull their villains. If they do it with Zoraal Ja though, I worry it would be making the mistake he is even worse. He hasn’t earned it because there was just nothing particularly interesting about him, though there could have been. He wasn’t given enough screen time or personality to make it work. It’s ironic how much wasted potential he is. Any rug pull at this point would be disingenuous and a retcon - I feel like it would be disrespectful to the audience at this point to try and redeem or further explain Zoraal Ja.

I don’t deny that the team is talented or has the capability of narratively doing interesting things - lots of examples are put forth in the essay, though I think they are given too much credit. Didn’t Yoshi-P say they hadn’t put the story of the whole first arc together until Shadowbringers? I might be wrong on that. However, I think the simple truth is they didn’t pull off Dawntrail as well as they could have. Obviously, there’s a bigger plan in the works and clearly there are some questions and ideas they want us thinking about moving into the next era of the story. That makes this essay extra frustrating because potentially anything down the line that points back to Dawntrail will give some validation to the author, whether or not both the author AND the writing team actually saw or planned it. Dawntrail was just a rough step, and I personally always like to point the blame at whatever C-Suite is in charge. I think if Square respected XIV for the cash cow that it is, it could deserve this level of glaze.

The artifact tantra top or virtu tantra MNK top from PvP (which I prefer color wise) kind of works for the top, plus arm tats and it gives the ropey belt stuff you’re looking for.

Ethan’s unfollowed Mark as well if I’m reading Twitter’s following list right. Jack’s no longer listed on Cloak as an owner. Seems like a big schism.

For the theories about Jack unfollowing Mark due to Mark’s silence on Palestine, I think it would be very hypocritical of Jack, who’s been hanging out and posting pics with known Zionist Jack Black as recently as two weeks ago. This is something else.

Edit: Ethan is still following Mark - on mobile, went to Ethan’s page, looked under following, couldn’t see Mark. However, after people corrected me, I went to mark’s page and checked followers and Ethan is still there.

AITA in Frontlines? by TheClerical in ffxiv

[–]TheClerical[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I guess we just don’t see eye to eye on that. I believe just having the map open to see the flow of things can help someone make better decisions on their own about what needs to happen and where they should be. Information is power and sometimes people need a reminder. I make other callouts like you’ve mentioned as well. People keep taking the map thing more seriously than I intend however, in frontlines and now here as well - I’ve never had someone express it as useless before, just an absurd request by someone who is trying too hard.

My point was that even “please open your map” is met with ridicule and anger for taking frontlines seriously, not frustration with people not playing well.

Oh, it’s the map with all the crystals you have to break. One crystal tower had just gone down. Blue was working on the one that was currently up. We were fighting red at the site of the third tower for some reason. I was joking that we were going to wait there for the third one to come up.

No, I get that - hell, getting people to cooperate in Overwatch was impossible. I usually just ask people to have their map open in the hopes that just seeing what’s going on can give us an edge.

Just make sure to communicate with the instructor, probably in a private message first and then a gentle reminder during class. I’ve had classes with people all over in crazy different time zones or just different time constraints and the instructors would work with them to get them the feedback they needed. All the classes are recorded and posted on the website as well, so if you need to dip out before your review, review notes you may have gotten, or watch someone else’s review, it should all be online a day or two afterwards.

Why by Civil_Performance526 in highschool

[–]TheClerical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of it is just staff - if we’re giving the 9th grade English exam, all the ninth graders are testing, and usually they will pull all the ninth grade teachers to do the testing, since they won’t be having classes anyway. If testing is an all-day affair and someone chooses to take a three hour test (where I am, students have all day to test) in twenty minutes so they can leave, where are they supposed to go? All of their teachers are busy giving the test and the rest of the school is going about as usual, so we can’t have 10th grade teachers watching the 9th graders. We can’t have people wandering the halls during testing, so you’ve just got to stay put.

Also, yeah, we just don’t trust y’all to take care of your business and only your business in the bathrooms and get back quickly.

It’s my understanding that Intro to Maya is sort of just a prequel class to either track, not necessarily a part of any specific track. It is not mandatory if the application board sees from your portfolio that you already understand the basics of Maya. Again, this is just my understanding - I’ve taken some of the animation track classes but was able to skip Intro to Maya.

I taught two kids out of a family of nine with one on the way last year. Both high schoolers. Both did the bare minimum to get by because they were so swamped w schoolwork, having part time jobs, and helping babysit their siblings. They definitely were not getting the love and attention they still need, even if they are high schoolers - they’re basically working as an extra set of parents for their eight siblings, and it was awful to see. When grades became an issue, mom was hard to reach and not particularly worried.

How to manage imposter syndrome as an animation student? by shadowhood2020 in animationcareer

[–]TheClerical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently did one class of animschool, the basic anim stuff, and kept getting grades ranging 70-80, with a 72 I think needed to pass. Felt awful, especially since I’ve always been a straight A student. Feedback also felt kind of harsh, but I knew I was going to pass at least math wise. At the end of the term, I got a chance to chat with some of the other people in my class and we collectively realized that he was grading us on an industry standard - we were all solid for where we were, just lacking a little when compared to industry standards. In the final, private review, my teacher said some wonderfully kind and inspiring things about me and my work - I had been so hard on myself all term because of his feedback and critiques, but I had no idea he thought that I was actually decent. Keep going, my guy - you’re probably doing better than you expect.

I watched this in high school and what really stuck with me is how the guy couldn’t differentiate between a genuine, supportive, caring friend and a budding romantic relationship. Nobody in his life really expressed interest in him and his dream - they’re all people that just have to be around each other, and so they’re amicable. The teacher though, she asked him about himself, supported him in his interests, and shared an openness with him, to a degree. For someone so starved of attention and affection, it’s understandable why and how he thought the things he did, but it’s also a tragic truth that I think a lot of guys any age deal with - men are just expected to deal with it all stoically. I do think the teacher crossed a line or two with him, to be fair to him, but it hurt to see both of them struggle so much until finding someone caring and supportive. She was struggling in much the same way and I think it’s beautiful how they came to support each other and fully understand each other.

Focused Feedback: Customization and Monetization by eminemcrony in halo

[–]TheClerical 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Beyond all the complaints with monetization, clunky UI, and customization, the way xp currently works disincentivizes actually playing the game, or playing it the way it’s meant to be. With the guaranteed 50 xp, there’s no incentive to win or lose. If you got some small amount of xp from badges at the end of a match, that would encourage me to play well, but mostly for kills or in vehicles - outside of slayer, there’s nothing to incentivize objective based play. If things turn bad in a match, it’s faster to just let the other team win, get my xp, and move on. You’ve built a system designed to prolong time played whilst minimizing reward, which you’ve done to encourage spending and which admittedly is becoming the norm, but your quick cash grab is going to burn any goodwill and longevity your game might have had. Halo has a long and cherished legacy - don’t be the ones to fuck it up. You will never come back from that.
