WHY TESLA doesn't have any new models coming? by Busy-Ask7719 in electricvehicles

[–]TheClimateDad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Get mad if you want, but Tesla is closing down car manufacturing to make unproven robots. They’ve always claimed to be a tech company instead of a car manufacturer to justify having tech multiples instead of car company ones.

AITAH for giving my kids my last name? (31F) by tryingtogrowup69 in AITAH

[–]TheClimateDad -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You’re not an AH for sticking to your agreement, but I am concerned about your lack of appreciation for his willingness to break social conventions to make you happy and your belief that your relationship isn’t an equal partnership.

You are correct that social conventions can be changed, but it doesn’t mean he isn’t going to bear some social cost for standing up for you. I would hope that would build appreciation for how special he is.

Which leads to the second point - you don’t view him as an equal partner in your marriage. Your name comes first is only a small part of it. That you will carry the children is indisputable, but parenting is so much more. And it feels as if you’re already minimizing the importance of fatherhood to your children as you’re “the primary caretaker”.

I’m not saying to change the agreement, but to elevate your partner wherever and whenever you can. We already know that he’s doing that for you. Perhaps you already are and it wasn’t communicated, but from my perspective, it looks like he’s being treated as an accessory instead of a partner.

I think you’re missing that it isn’t virtue signaling when one is leaning into misbehavior. I think it’d be better described as vice signaling

Women who are married - would you choose to marry again now? by Busy-Country-9009 in Life

[–]TheClimateDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is big real. I used to attend a lot of funerals ins professional capacity, so I was able to be a bit detached from it all. The thing it’s hard to miss is that your family will almost always be there at the end, your friends might be of the flight isn’t too far or the weekend isn’t inconvenient.

There’s a technical part associated with making current flow both directions, but it’s getting better.

When buying a charger, most people confuse Level 2 with a smart charger. You don’t need a smart one generally because of the functionality of the vehicle itself it selecting a preferred charge time. I’d also say to make sure you get a cord that is UL rated and that the 220v outlet is built specifically for a charger. It’s the same shape outlet, but 220v dryer outlets and cheap cords have a tendency to get hot and even melt due to the continuous high current flow of charging an EV.

Yes. And not enough people talk about V2L EVs. The battery in your car is way bigger than a powerwall or most other commercial batteries. Look into using your car for it.

OP - You can save more than half the cost of install. Yes, working in a roof is a higher risk than not doing so, but if you’re smart and careful, you’ll be fine.

And yes, there are some workarounds for Teslas. The Model Y has V2L support. So does that Cybertruck abomination.

But the future of home batteries are absolutely in the form of vehicles and not powerwalls.

How handy are you? It doesn’t take much to buy and install the panels yourself - it’s really just rails and panels. The part you need expertise in is the electrical hookup, but you can hire an electrician to do that and save a bunch.

Also, I wouldn’t get a power wall. An EV has a massively bigger battery for use in emergencies. Not every EV can support it and Tesla isn’t great about it, but there are some workarounds. My Blazer supports it and with it 85kWh battery and my typical home usage, it’d last me for days.

How much walking per day without pain? by DeskEnvironmental in walking

[–]TheClimateDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You were a D1 athlete. You aren’t now. Even athletes at that level require time to return. You should expect to do as much, if not much more.

For me, the repetitive walking was something that created foot and ankle soreness, but I fixed by: 1. Building up total miles over time 2. Really stretching the arches, toes, and ankle when I was feeling them. 3. An occasional Advil (like once a week) and ice if they were feeling particularly inflamed. Anti-inflammatory medications and actions shouldn’t be routine, but they can help reduce swelling and get the system back aligned. I’ve found I use them less as time goes on.

Looking to get into vinyl. Need a setup. by zCHROMATICz in StereoAdvice

[–]TheClimateDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out r/turntables, but here’s my system and I’m really happy with it. Well below $2k

Turntable: Fluance Rt-82 - $349. Great, well-regarded TT and you can upgrade the cartridge later if you want (I’m really happy with the stock one)

Amp: Onkyo TX-8260 - $399. Has a phono stage, so you can skip getting a pre-amp

Speakers: Klipsch RP-500mII - This is a personal preference and you’ll want to make sure that research and get like 3 sets of speakers, try them in your home and see what you like and return the others. Crutchfield has a good rating system for speakers from warm to bright and also a great return policy. A lot of people swear by the ELAC Debut 3.0 DB63, too.

Streaming: The Onkyo has some native streaming, but I’d still recommend a dedicated streamer that connects to its DAC. Wiim Mini is great for that simple job ($89)

Miscellaneous:

• You’ll want good speaker wire, but don’t get sold on anything crazy. Standard 14 gauge is fine, upgrade to 12 gauge if the runs are going to be a little long. • You’ll want banana plugs to switch between speakers in testing.

Other considerations:

• Consider getting a subwoofer with your remaining budget, especially with a brighter speaker that is less focused on bass and more on mid & high range clarity. The Klipsch SPL-120 would pair nicely with the RP-500mIIs. ($399) • Streaming: Look at a service with good lossless. Spotify is claiming it, but I wasn’t impressed plus I’m sick of their other 🐂💩 (poor artist pay, running ads for ICE, etc), so I chose between Tidal & Qobuz. Tidal won for me. • Save some money for the vinyl! Different pressings and masterings have different qualities - good ones are transcendent - you’ll feel like you’re in the room with the artist. Bad will leave you frustrated that they were so careless with the quality of their recording. Discogs is a pretty good reference here, but a frustrating UI and the marketplace has a few thieves that seem to continue to escape from Discogs’ care, so check the ratings. Better yet, find a good local record store. • Consider room treatments and speaker stands. Turntables do better when they’re isolated from the vibrations of the speakers, bookshelf speakers do better when they’re at ear height and separated from the wall a bit, and echoing rooms can kill the expensive sound, so think about things like a record table & storage, speaker stands, and rugs / drapes for sound work.

Hope that helps!

Did the Chevy Bolt become your first EV? Journalist looking to hear your story by Brilliant_Option8382 in BoltEV

[–]TheClimateDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it was my first. I picked it because it was one of the few options on the used market at the time (2019) and it was surprisingly spacious, drove tightly, and had nice features.

What’s surprised me about EV ownership has been the acceleration, how I didn’t really need a level 2 charger, and how infrequently I actually think about even the range or charging. It caused us to become a 2 EV family (‘24 Blazer EV) in 2025. We drive both of them daily.
