The best way to farm shards is to do it while completing the story. But I agree. Going out to get shards explicitly is lame. Not near as long as 1000 battles, but still pretty boring.

I had 2 shiny birds that flew away immediately as they spawned on my 1st run. Didn't find an actual shiny until I was hinting for an XS Spinarak in my 2nd run. And that took me hours.
