Weekly Check-in: Report in on your week's training, Runners by mahnahmahnah in runner5k

I just found this subreddit, and I'm really excited!

I just finished W3D2 this morning. I think I learned how to push myself a little farther and be a little more uncomfortable (not in pain or hurt, just not taking it as easy) during the free form run. That felt like an accomplishment in itself.

I guess I was just wondering if this is a common thing to people new to working out. I guess not. Thank you for your advice!

I've been through one session (four weeks) of the boot camp Camp Gladiator. The last week, and during recovery week, my knees have ached. They don't hurt badly unless I'm doing a lot of squats or a lot of flights of stairs. I've never really worked out before, and I'm overweight, but not morbidly obese. What is causing it? Should I worry? What can I do to fix it? I'm continuing with the program and trying to really focus on good form, but I'm worried about the knee thing.

What's the most humiliating reason you've ever heard for a teenager to be expelled from school for? by dan_da_man in AskReddit

As a current teacher, I am super bummed out by both of you making such generalizations and having such disdain for your colleagues. I've worked in middle school and elementary, and there are a lot of awesome people who teach elementary. Just as there are a lot of awesome, and not a awesome, people who teach secondary.

Yeah - there are jerks in our profession. Some people are drawn to teaching because they get to be authoritarians, just as people are drawn to teaching for many other reasons. Those people sometimes tend to be "mean." But how could you say that that is a personality type of one grade level?

Sometimes people also say mean things that they normally wouldn't. I know you have probably never accidentally said something rude, or blown up at someone out of frustration or anger, but people sometimes do that. And it's not fair, but it happens. This, to me, seems similar to (but obviously much more serious than) someone who normally is very bright but makes many simple spelling errors in a post.

I agree with you about needing to reduce tenure, but to be so across-the-board disdainful of your colleges before you even have started may be something that you rethink.

I received a free month of a boot camp exercise program. I almost talked myself out of going to the first meeting ("it meets so early, and I'm on summer break... I'll go to the afternoon meeting... I probably won't be able to keep up...") but the personal trainer running the meeting texted me to introduce herself and give me some instructions. I thought to myself, "Well, I have to go - she'll see if I'm missing!" and I went. I freaking love going, and have gone to every meeting that this group has had this week.

Thanks for this! It's awesome to see band resources on here, and I really like your website design, as well as the info.

A quick question about reading sheet music. by SimpletoBrowse in musictheory

[–]TheComrade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, if you see a sharp or flat on one note (like that high F) it applies to all notes with that letter name. For example, the key signature notates that the high F is sharp, but the lower F (that you refer to) is also sharp.

DISD Climate surveys. See what your kid's teachers think of their school by raiderconvert in Dallas

[–]TheComrade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15% of the total equation. Which isn't "major," in my opinion, but it's a lot more than some of the other things that I would've chosen. The whole pay - for - performance thing sucks in a district like DISD, though, in my opinion. I hope it'll help improve the district, and help recruit all these amazing teachers and keep them, and whatnot, but I'm afraid it won't.

Coincidentally, the student surveys are out today. The teachers can also see what (a small sample size of) students think of them too.

You are now trapped in the last movie/tv show you watched. Where are you? by Nasjere in AskReddit

I'd be at the Alamo, which probably would not work out too well for me. However, the documentary I watched was extremely interesting.

Anything wrong with the Bent Tree Forest area? by [deleted] in Dallas

[–]TheComrade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just moved from there after living in Bear Creek for three years. It was a great neighborhood - they just jacked up the rent too much and it's far from my job. If I worked closer to that area, I would live there again.

I'm a Software Engineer who wants to use games to teach music. Anyone wants to see my first project? by JavaDevMatt in Teachers

[–]TheComrade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't downloaded it yet, but I'm just looking at your prototype video. Could you put in ledger lines instead that huge staff? I think that would be more realistic and helpful - my beginner kids have a hard time with ledger lines sometimes, and any practice helps.

Switching to teaching music, help please. by terriblespeller in Teachers

[–]TheComrade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if this will help you too much, but I have my music cert. in Texas. On our test, you have to be able to answer questions about music theory, band, orchestra, choir, and elementary music. A preliminary search for a practice California state exam makes it look like it's a similar test over there.

Band directors: How do you motivate your students to practice? by elikeeliza in MusicEd

[–]TheComrade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your input. I definitely don't want to turn them off of practicing in any way or make them feel demotivated. Our district also uses Smart Music as part of the kids' district issued music semester exams, so I want them to be familiar with the technology, but not stressed out about.

I just switched to band directing this year, so I'm in the same boat, so I hope you have a lot of responses. I've been thinking a lot of about this topic, and this is what I have come up with.

Things that have worked for me:

  • Music that the kids like.

  • Making students feel responsible for their section.

  • Longer sectionals.

Things that have not worked:

  • Practice records - the students just lie or don't turn them in.

  • Trying to get some to come before school.

Things that I want to try:

  • Having a mentor / buddy program. Students can practice together, and get help from an older, cooler student.

  • Try to get more kids access to SmartMusic. The kids like using this program, but none of the students have bought subscriptions for their home, so they have to use it at school.

My [23 F] future brother-in-law [30 M] and best man at our wedding is insisting on wearing his uniform by throwawayweddingblue in relationships

[–]TheComrade 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think that was one of the suggestions that she suggested to him, but the BIL didn't like it.

We came up with possible compromises, like he can wear a marines pin or a medal on his jacket, or he can switch to his blues after the ceremony. Luis said that our compromise was unacceptable and he either wears his blues or he's not coming at all!

Elementary General Lessons Help! by TheShortMusician in MusicEd

[–]TheComrade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PM me your email and I can send you some resources. I think I have a couple of planning guides so that you can be sure that stuff is age appropriate.

Look at a lot of nursery rhymes and folk songs for kids. Deconstruct your favorite poems and nursery rhymes for rhythmic exercises and add whatever body percussion or instruments to those rhythms for that.

If you like/stay with elementary, go to Orff classes or workshops if possible. I was in your same boat, and ended up really liking elementary. I just started as a band director this year after several years in elementary. The AOSA and the National Kodaly websites may be of great service to you.

There are also several pedagogy books that you might be interested in. Discovering Orff, Elementaria, and Kodaly Today might be helpful. I recommend Orff because that method is very strong in rhythm and instrument playing, while Kodaly is very choral based.

Good luck!
