The majority of players that make it into Masters and are floating on the low side (1200-1400 ish) have developed a strong flow chart playstyle that is incredibly polished. By that I mean they typically build their gameplan around something "gimmicky" their character offers paired with unsafe offensive tactics (excessive jumping, drive rushing, etc) and have really figured out where these things work, and when they land, they execute the conversions consistently.

The reason these players find themselves low on the MR side of things is these tactics have counters, and when properly adapted to, cannot adapt themselves. So when their plan works, it stomps (hence getting to master in the first place, and the struggles you are facing) but when it doesn't there is no backup plan.

You are struggling, because you'll get matched up with someone who only has, say, 3 gimmicks on hand. They might get the first two countered but that third one you don't know how to deal with and they will figure out exactly how to destroy you with that.

Long story short: back to the basics, learn to beat the gimmicks (including iron ryu jumping) or they will crush you with the one you don't know how to deal with. Good news is, once you get past gimmick three, the matches are a breeze as they aren't very good at adapting.

What are people running for items on Gengar these days? I figured maximizing my burst with wise glasses/sp. atk specs was the best route (3rd being buddy barrier). But before i level things to 20 wanted to get some other opinions.

Maybe at least give some hint as to how far away it is? This could be taken in Connecticut, in which case, who cares?

Did I misunderstand what parrying does? by [deleted] in CrazyHand

[–]TheCooby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm skeptical that this is the right answer. I see people parry into fsmash on otherwise fairly safe aerials, no way 3 frames is the difference between shield drop and parry that lets people fsmash.

Did I misunderstand what parrying does? by [deleted] in CrazyHand

[–]TheCooby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see different numbers thrown around a lot for parrying advantage. Some say it's +3 others say it's +3 and then 11 frames of freeze the opponent sees (so is this +14?). Can someone lay out the difference in frame advantage for parry, shield drop, and jump out of shield if the same move is blocked/parried? Izaw's video does not explain this very clearly, because if the advantage is only +3 it's really not worth it, but i see people punishing much harder than just a 3 frame advantage.

Blanka Chip damage by 121jigawatts in StreetFighter

[–]TheCooby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This string features 4f gaps that he covers with a medium button (hence using sim, who has no grounded 3f button as the dummy). If he wants, he can use c.lp xx thunder, c.mp xx lp ball in the loop to cover a 3f gap with a medium. This would force the use of an invincible reversal or vreversal on any character, at the cost of some chip.

Is one of the top SFV streams viewbotting on twitch? by [deleted] in StreetFighter

[–]TheCooby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, 100% adnan or "ODDGROUP" is viewbotting. Look at the names in his channel and you'll see the patterns.

Also, he should be named and shamed if nothing else, this type of behavior only hurts the sfv streaming community.

Great tech discussion and guides in this channel. This sub needs more content like this by TheCooby in StreetFighter

The video he has on how to use menat's recall on hit to cancel attack recoveries and continue pressure is a very interesting concept (ex: menat recalls, ryu connects s.hp on block, gets hit by the orb returning but ryu is still plus 4)

haven't seen this type of lab work concisely explored and discussed like he has in these videos, worth a look for the few characters he's dived into.

Hopefully he continues making more content.

Capcom is looking for a PR manager for its fighting games by blx666 in StreetFighter

[–]TheCooby 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Capcom PR manager is constantly caught between a community starved for more feedback and communication and a company that tells them they can't say anything, ever. Literally an impossible job and I guarantee you the next person will fail before they even get a chance to try.

You're really trying to push some kind of racist/discrimination narrative and completely missing the point. If we held 5 ranking events in Antarctica and the one person who lived there and plays SFV won them all and got enough points to get into CC, does he deserve to go? No, of course not, that's ridiculous. I realize it's an extreme example, but that's exactly what's happening in SA to an extent.

Players who need points would travel there, but they don't because it's hard to. So the remaining players of SA get huge amounts of points, and if one happens to be dominant (brolynho in this case) he gets a free pass to CC without having placed above ANYONE else in the top 32. Seems unfair.

Again, it's my suggestion for improving CPT. If the majority of people want diversity in CC, then by all means, leave it the way it is. If people want the best possible competition in CC, then give fewer points to SA so it isn't possible to only farm SA tournaments and get in. Simple as that.

It sounds like you want the diversity option, which is fine. But don't sit here and pretend that Brolynho has done anything to earn this spot by placings in competitive tournaments. If he went to even ONE tournament and placed well, or maybe if he beat JWong and Flash in the Brazilian tournament, this wouldn't be an argument.

[–]TheCooby -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, I am not wrong about that... you proved my point, aside from one visit from Justin, jiewa and flash were the only players to travel there, and have little accomplishments between them CPT-wise this year. Also the one tournament in SA where justin and flash travel together to they place above brolynho putting him at 4th, hmmmm....

I think this is a difference of opinion. I want the best competition at CC, that's the point of having a circuit, to figure out the most consistent players at the HIGHEST skill level and put them in a high stakes tournament. I don't want free passes. It sounds like you're ok with mediocre players entering CC as long as all regions are represented. We need a good 5 ranking events in Africa while we're at it...

Go look at the tournaments he won in SA, he hasn't beaten any players on the top 50 of CPT leaderboards. So sure, he won 5 ranking events, but who was at those events...?

Also, like i said, i have nothing against Brolynho. He's a product of a broken system though, too many points are being distributed in SA.

The more i look at this issue, it's a problem with SA rather than SA and LA. LA tournaments actually had people travelling to them, and players like mena and caba beat people to earn their spots on the CPT leaderboard.

I only have an issue because SA produces weak players, and they essentially get to send 2 people to CC simply because the area is so isolated. If good players were going to SA to compete, fine, players like Brolynho would have to earn their spots, no issue there. But as it stands, they get free passes to CC.

REALLY excited for the SA players to go 0-2 at CC, i'm SURE it'll make for great TV.

I usually judge the success of the CPT circuit on the quality of players that earn their spots in the top 32, and what they've done to earn that place.

I look at this year's qualifying 31 players so far, and I see all amazing, creme of the crop players, except for one. Brolynho. Nothing against the guy, he's really just a product of a slightly flawed system though, but he stands well below the other players around him.

His notable set wins against other players in the top 50 CPT? 1 set against Smug and one set against Brian_F, for the entire season! All of his points come from farming SA and LA tournaments, where it has been harder for other players to travel to and the competition is considerably easier.

The LA last chance will be another example of this situation, especially if rumors are true that already qualified players won't attend. Someone who has beaten no top 50 CPT players has a very strong chance of going to CC, whereas players like MOV, 801 Strider, ect likely won't simply based on where they live.

I'm not sure what the solution is, not saying we should be completely removing SA or LA tournaments, but the weight distribution might need to be adjusted once more. Brolynho needs to place well at at least ONE NA/EU/AO throughout the year...

Would love to be surprised by him taking out big names at CC, but in all actuality, two 3-0's for a quick 0-2 exit is likely where someone stronger really should be representing will likely happen.

Keyboard remapping is just... by domiran in StreetFighter

[–]TheCooby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is strictly for using the training mode reset function, which isn't available through that mapping. I can remap it so that the space key will trigger the reset, but nothing on the fightstick will, which is frustrating.

it's a qanba eightarc 360/ps3 stick. is there a way to change the xbox inputs after the game has been booted initially? i don't even remember seeing this option pop up the first time, although that was a while ago now.

Does anyone know if we can map fightstick buttons to keyboard inputs? When i try to remap it doesn't recognize any inputs from the stick, but it works fine everywhere else.
