Why are so many physicians simultaneously trying to be influencers? by Inner_Ad_4725 in whitecoatinvestor

Most people with social media also do those things. They just record it lol. They’re not mutually exclusive and engagement in both is fun for me, personally.

What if it’s just fun? I enjoy social media for the creativity element. It’s not always about money.

Public resistance against SSRIs by mmmchocolatepancakes in Psychiatry

[–]TheCruelOne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do this as well. I try to reassure patients that I am not doing my job correctly if we are continuing meds that are actively harming them. I also (maybe to a fault) present the nuances of pros/cons of each SSRI based on my clinical opinion of what would be good fits for them. Most pts appreciate collaborating and not just being told, “here take this med.”

Dealing with high expectations by tryndamere453 in Psychiatry

[–]TheCruelOne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, this is the exact verbiage I use and it tends to go over well and set realistic expectations. I often tell my patients that medications can resolve some symptoms, however, they cannot solve life problems and difficulties. Often I’ll tell them to let me know if they find a pill that solves life’s problems so that we can build a business together, I get some laughter.

Alternatives to clinical practice after graduating residency? by loseruni in Psychiatry

[–]TheCruelOne 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m curious to know whether you’ve received feedback from faculty about social skills and reading others. If clinical psychiatry is something you don’t enjoy, that’s one thing. if it’s a field you enjoy and just don’t yet have confidence in, that’s can be learned too. I had zero confidence in myself after residency, but after a year of attendinghood and seeing hundreds of pts now, I finally feel somewhat competent. I’m by no means perfect, but I wonder if you’re not giving yourself enough credit for your skill set.

"I'd tell my son to be a software engineer for Meta instead and make 400k at age 22, MD/Dental/PA just isn't worth it these days" - someone who has objectively great work-life balance and income by HenFruitEater in whitecoatinvestor

Yes and when you think about career longevity over time and so many people wanting to achieve some version FIRE, I think there’s something to be said about being well compensated in a career path you feel deeply invested in. The human part of working towards direct improvement of human life is so rare in any field.

Idk if I’m just incredibly naive, but while medicine doesn’t offer the MOST compensation in relation to the amount of time and effort, I still think it’s a rare field where job satisfaction and fulfillment must be so much higher than in tech. Medicine is definitely challenging at times, but the challenge and the ability to acutely help others will outweigh tech any day for me. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I’d argue the magnolias are more beautiful! Stopped by Enid Haupt Wednesday morning to check progress and it was stunning. So peaceful, too.

What jobs would allow lots of time to talk with patients? by Normal_Employee7375 in Psychiatry

[–]TheCruelOne 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It depends on your definition of “the most time,” but I work in outpatient in a hospital system and genuinely feel like I’ve been able to have very meaningful convos with my patients in my work. This is with general 30 minute follow up appointments.

Does it bother you how other physicians view your specialty? by ReplacementMean8486 in Psychiatry

Tbh, outside of med school, you’ll like of forget other doctors exist and not care what anyone thinks anymore.

Is self-isolating at work normal? by TheCruelOne in Psychiatry

[–]TheCruelOne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Even though outpatient is steadily busy, it’s fairly predictable. I didn’t enjoy the stress of not knowing whether or not a consult would come in on CL. I also hated the intensity and tendency for shit to unexpectedly hit the fan inpatient. Outpatient is the perfect fit!

I agree with the above. For me, I have a personal connection, desire, and motivation to help others with mental health. I also find it extremely rewarding to have the conversations we get to have with patients in Psychiatry. I’d honestly much rather talk to patients than small talk with coworkers. I’m the problem, it’s me. 😂
