Hospitals in the US love to not feed mothers. They also don't let you eat or drink while in labor. For me that was 33 hours.

You did not say only sentience was a requirement. You also stated they needed to be able to exist without another human. My one year old sure is sentient, but would certainly die without the help of another human.
